To run a YouTube radio stream with a static station logo and changing now-playing text, send YouTube a video signal made from the logo image and a text overlay, together with the radio audio. The text overlay must receive current artist-and-title metadata to update as tracks change. YouTube connects to the encoder through a stream URL and private stream key; you can build the scene in software or use a hardware encoder.
What you need for the stream
A YouTube Live broadcast needs both audio and video. Your radio feed supplies the audio; a still image of your station logo supplies the video. To show changing track information, the encoder must also render text over that image and update it from the current track metadata.

- Radio audio: a playlist or other audio source that can remain available while the stream runs.
- Station visual: a logo image, optionally with fixed station information such as the station name or frequency.
- Now-playing data: current artist and title metadata, if the text is meant to change automatically with each track.
- Encoder: software on a computer or server, or a standalone hardware encoder.
- YouTube Live access: a channel with live streaming enabled, plus the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
A static logo by itself does not create changing now-playing text. The encoder has to receive track metadata and use it as the input to a video text layer.

| Option | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Graphical software scene | Operators who want to position a logo, audio source, and text layer visually. | OBS is one software option. The computer, audio source, and network must remain available for the stream to continue. |
| Automated software pipeline | Operators comfortable configuring an audio playlist, image, metadata, and video output in software. | Liquidsoap documents a YouTube example using a playlist, image video, radio audio, and metadata-driven video text. Its documented encoding settings are starting points, not universal requirements. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | Stations that prefer dedicated encoding hardware over a general-purpose computer. | YouTube’s encoder directory includes the AJA HELO Plus, described as a standalone H.264 encoder with tools for logos, lower thirds, picture-in-picture, and scheduled playback. Check current availability and suitability before buying; dedicated hardware is optional. |
YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. Its ingestion options include RTMP/RTMPS, DASH, and HLS; use a protocol supported by your encoder and the configuration shown for your stream in Live Control Room. Do not assume an endpoint copied from another setup is correct for yours.

Set up the logo and now-playing layer
Prepare the station image
Create a still image with the station logo and any fixed branding you want viewers to see. Treat this image as the video source, not as a replacement for the radio audio. If the image includes fixed details, keep them separate from the changing track text so that they remain legible when a new title appears.
Connect the radio audio
Configure the encoder to send the radio source alongside the image. In a Liquidsoap-style workflow, the playlist supplies audio, an image supplies video, and the two are combined into the output sent to YouTube.

Make track text update
Provide the encoder with metadata for the current artist and title, then connect that metadata to a text layer rendered into the video. Liquidsoap documents metadata records with artist and title fields, as well as a video text operator that can use changing metadata as its displayed text. If the audio source does not provide current metadata, the overlay cannot reliably show the current track automatically; arrange for the source or your workflow to supply it.
Check the final output at the resolution you intend to send. Make the text readable over the logo background and test it at a small screen size, where long titles and thin lettering can be difficult to read.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Start the YouTube Live stream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and complete any channel live-streaming enablement steps. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- Create or select a stream. In Live Control Room, create a stream or select the one you plan to use. Copy its server URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a secret: it authorizes an encoder to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish it, include it in a public screenshot, or share it with someone who should not control the broadcast.
- Configure and start the encoder. Select the station image for video, the radio feed for audio, and the metadata-driven text layer if you want now-playing updates. Start sending the stream to YouTube.
- Check the preview and stream health. Confirm in Live Control Room that the logo, audio, and changing text appear as expected. Review YouTube’s health feedback and correct any reported media or encoding issue before relying on the stream.
- Plan how to end or archive it. YouTube documents stopping an encoder to end an encoder stream. Streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when stopped; decide whether that archive behavior suits your station.
Encoding settings and stream-health checks
There is no single bitrate or resolution that can be specified for every encoder, source, and stream configuration based on the available official guidance here. A third-party implementation guide published May 29, 2026 gives example settings and a sample FFmpeg command, but those are examples rather than official universal requirements. Use your encoder’s supported settings and YouTube’s live health feedback rather than copying a command or bitrate without checking it.
YouTube’s stream-health tooling can report issues including missing audio or video, unsupported codecs, and keyframe intervals longer than four seconds. A keyframe warning is a reason to inspect the encoder’s output settings; it is not a substitute for the rest of the health check. Confirm that audio and video are both reaching the preview and that the output remains stable after changes.

Keep the station running and recover from interruptions
A continuous radio broadcast depends on the audio source, encoder process, and network connection all continuing to work. With software running locally, the computer and its network connection must stay available. The implementation guide discusses OBS reconnection and restarting FFmpeg after a process exits as possible recovery approaches; these are configuration ideas, not guarantees of uninterrupted operation. Set up monitoring and recovery for the specific software or hardware you choose, and verify that it actually resumes sending after a disconnection.

If you have a license for third-party material, the rights owner may still need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube says a live stream can be interrupted when the channel is not allowlisted even if the operator has a license. An archived broadcast may also receive a Content ID claim after the live stream ends. Confirm that your rights cover the intended live use and that any required allowlisting is in place before scheduling a long broadcast.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The encoder will not connect to YouTube. | Confirm that live streaming is enabled, and that the encoder has the server URL and stream key for the selected stream. | Re-enter the values shown in Live Control Room. Keep the key private and do not substitute an endpoint from a different setup. |
| The preview has no audio. | Check that the encoder is using the intended radio source and that the source is producing audio. | Use Live Control Room’s health feedback to confirm whether audio is missing, then correct the source or encoder configuration. |
| The logo appears, but the track title does not change. | Check whether current artist/title metadata is reaching the encoder and whether the text layer uses that metadata. | Connect the current metadata to the rendered video text; a fixed text label will not update by itself. |
| The stream is interrupted or replaced. | Check YouTube’s warning and stream-health feedback. A third-party content match is one possible cause. | Address the reported issue. For licensed material, confirm any required Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner. |
| The stream stops after an encoder or connection failure. | Check whether the source, process, computer or server, and network are still running. | Use the reconnection or restart features available in your chosen setup, then monitor that the encoder reconnects and the preview returns. |
