To keep useful alerts while silencing only the types you do not want, turn on Manage notification categories for each app on your Galaxy phone. Then choose an app and adjust the categories it provides. The setting does not restore notifications that never arrived, and not every app offers categories.
Turn on notification categories
- Open Settings and tap Notifications.
- Tap Advanced settings.
- Turn on Manage notification categories for each app. Samsung documents this toggle in its Galaxy notification instructions.
Choose which alerts each app can send
- Return to Settings > Notifications and tap App notifications.
- Select an app, then tap Notification categories.
- Keep the categories you want, and silence or disable the ones you do not. Use the controls shown for that category; available options differ between apps.
For example, if an app provides separate categories, you might leave direct messages or account-security alerts enabled and silence promotional updates. Those are examples, not standard category names guaranteed to appear in every app.

Choose between alerting and silent notifications
Where the app offers the choice, an alerting notification can interrupt you with sound or vibration, while a silent one can remain visible in the notification shade without the same interruption. The exact behavior depends on the app and device settings. To customize a category’s sound, Samsung says some apps require you to select the category, leave Allow notifications on, choose Alert, and then select a sound. Some apps instead keep sound controls inside the app.

Search Settings for “notification categories” or “Manage notification categories for each app.” Menu labels and available features can differ by One UI version, device, carrier, and app. Samsung’s One UI 7 guidance notes feature variation; its One UI 8 instructions, dated July 10, 2025, describe a changed route for notification pop-up style: Settings > Notifications > App notifications > choose app > Notification pop-up style, then choose brief or detailed. Pop-up style changes how notifications appear; it is separate from category controls.

Samsung states: “The options will vary depending on the app. Some apps will not have a Notification categories section.” If that section is missing after you enable the setting, the app may not expose categories for you to manage.
Review alerts you dismissed
Notification history is separate from category management. To enable it, go to Settings > Notifications > Advanced settings > Notification history. Once enabled, it can help you review recently dismissed notifications; it cannot recover alerts from before you turned it on. Google’s Android notification guidance also describes history for snoozed and recently dismissed notifications, while noting that availability and settings vary by device.

Samsung announced on September 15, 2025, that One UI 8 would begin rolling out with Galaxy S25 and extend to selected devices, with more models to follow. That announcement is not a definitive current compatibility list: rollout timing and eligibility can vary by device and market. Check your phone’s available settings rather than assuming a particular menu or feature is present.
