Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If a Puppeteer screenshot shows a fallback font, wait for the page’s font-loading set to settle before calling page.screenshot(), then check whether the intended font is actually available. Network-idle navigation is not a font-readiness guarantee. If waiting does not fix the output, investigate failed font requests, missing system fonts or glyph coverage, and differences between the browser used locally and in production.
Why Puppeteer screenshots show fallback fonts
Navigation completion, network idleness, and font readiness are different signals. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide shows navigation with waitUntil: 'networkidle2' before a screenshot, but it does not say that this condition guarantees web fonts are ready. The Page.waitForNetworkIdle() API describes waiting for network activity to be idle for at least a configured period; it is not documented as a font check.

Font loading can also be settled without the font you expected having successfully rendered. The page may fall back after a failed or blocked font request, or the runtime may lack a local font that covers particular characters. Puppeteer’s Linux troubleshooting guidance notes that Linux dependencies are needed and that some character sets, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, may require extra font files.
Wait for fonts before taking the screenshot
After navigating, await document.fonts.ready in the page, then check the expected font and capture. Puppeteer documents this readiness mechanism in its PDF options: Page.pdf() waits for fonts by default, and PDFOptions.waitForFonts waits for document.fonts.ready. That PDF behavior should not be assumed for Page.screenshot(); the screenshot documentation does not promise an equivalent automatic wait.

const url = 'https://example.com/landing-page';
await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await document.fonts.ready;
});
const fontAvailable = await page.evaluate(() =>
document.fonts.check(
'16px "Your Web Font"',
'Representative landing page text'
)
);
if (!fontAvailable) {
throw new Error('Expected web font is not available before screenshot');
}
await page.screenshot({ path: 'landing-page.png', fullPage: true });
Replace the URL, font specification, representative text, and screenshot options with the values for your page. The font string should match the face declared in the page’s CSS. If a check returns false, do not capture and silently accept the fallback: inspect the face definition and the font request. If it returns true but the screenshot still looks wrong, compare the computed font styles and actual font responses; the check is a useful diagnostic, not proof that every character rendered in the intended face.
If network idle is unsuitable for a site that keeps connections open, use the navigation condition appropriate to the page and still await document.fonts.ready before capture. Treat network idleness as a network signal, not a substitute for font readiness.

Tell late loading from failed delivery or missing glyphs
| Likely branch | Useful clue | What to check | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Font was not ready at capture time | The output changes when the screenshot is delayed or when you await document.fonts.ready. |
Compare captures with and without the font wait; check the expected face after waiting. | A settled font-loading set can resolve the timing race, but does not establish that the intended external asset loaded. |
| Font delivery failed or was blocked | The desired font face is unavailable after the wait, or the browser reports a font request or console error. | Inspect request status, URL, access-control behavior, and relevant console or network failures in the same deployment. | The cause is site-specific; a failed request is a diagnostic possibility, not established without evidence from your page. |
| Runtime font or glyph coverage is missing | Only some scripts or characters are absent or substituted, especially in a minimal Linux image. | Inspect installed fonts and confirm coverage for the characters in the screenshot. | Correct CSS and a valid web-font URL do not rule out missing local fonts or glyph coverage. |
Check the deployment environment and browser
Verify the browser setup
Record the Puppeteer version, browser version, and the actual browser executable used by the capture job. The standard puppeteer package downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser; puppeteer-core does not download Chrome and is intended for setups that manage or connect to a browser separately. If local and production screenshots differ, confirm that both environments use the browser you think they do and compare their deployment configuration. See Puppeteer installation guidance.

Verify Linux fonts and character coverage
In a Linux host or container, check the installed font files and whether they cover the text that appears incorrectly. Add suitable font packages to the runtime image if the required script or glyphs are absent, then repeat the capture in that image. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance covers Linux dependencies and notes that some character sets, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, may need additional fonts. Installing fonts cannot fix a failed web-font request, so keep those diagnostic branches separate.

Troubleshooting by symptom
- Fallback appears only in fast captures: await
document.fonts.readybefore the screenshot. Network idle alone does not establish font readiness. - The expected face is unavailable after the wait: inspect the CSS face and the font request’s URL, response, access-control behavior, and browser console or network errors. Fix the delivery issue indicated by those logs.
- Only certain characters are missing: check whether the font contains those glyphs and whether the Linux runtime has suitable font coverage. Add the required fonts to the image if necessary.
- Local output is correct but CI or production is not: compare Puppeteer and browser versions, browser binary selection, and installed fonts between environments. Check whether one environment uses managed Chrome while another connects to a separately supplied browser.
- The font check succeeds but appearance remains wrong: compare computed styles against the intended family and inspect the actual font responses. A resolved readiness promise or a positive check is not by itself proof that the page used the intended face for every character.

For a screenshot without managing Puppeteer’s browser and font-wait flow, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. It accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with page verdict and billing information in response headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

What this means for SEO landing pages
This fix is about making your captured image reflect the page’s rendered typography. The Puppeteer documentation cited here explains screenshot timing, font waiting for PDF generation, browser installation, and Linux font dependencies; it does not establish that a missing-font screenshot changes search rankings or indexing. Diagnose the rendering issue on its own rather than inferring an SEO outcome from the screenshot.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does networkidle2 guarantee that web fonts have loaded?
No. It is a network-idleness condition, not a documented font-readiness check. Await document.fonts.ready before a screenshot.

Does page.screenshot() wait for fonts automatically?
The cited Puppeteer screenshot documentation does not promise that. Puppeteer explicitly documents font waiting for PDF generation, which should not be generalized to screenshots.
Why are only some characters missing?
The runtime may lack fonts that cover those glyphs, particularly in a minimal Linux image. Check character coverage and installed fonts as well as web-font delivery.
