If a Puppeteer screenshot no longer lines up with the page after scrolling, first identify whether you capture the page or an element. ElementHandle.screenshot() may scroll the element into view before capturing it, while Page.screenshot() captures according to page screenshot options. Then check your viewport, fullPage, clip and captureBeyondViewport settings, and wait for the page’s scroll-triggered changes to settle. These checks narrow down the cause; without the capture code and page behavior, there is no single guaranteed fix.
1. Identify what Puppeteer is capturing
Start with the exact screenshot call. A page capture and an element capture have different behavior around scrolling.

Page.screenshot()
page.screenshot() captures the page using the screenshot options you provide. Decide whether you want the visible viewport, a clipped region, or the full page, then configure the options accordingly. See the Puppeteer Page.screenshot() API.

Puppeteer documents that ElementHandle.screenshot() “scrolls the element into view if needed, and then uses Page.screenshot() to take a screenshot of the element.” If your code scrolls the page and then calls an element screenshot, this implicit scroll may affect the position you observe. The element screenshot option scrollIntoView defaults to true; check the setting in the ElementHandle.screenshot() API.

2. Match the screenshot options to the desired image
Check the options passed to the screenshot call, especially these:
fullPagecaptures the full page and defaults tofalse.clipspecifies a capture region.captureBeyondViewportdefaults tofalsewhen there is no clip andtruewhen a clip is specified.
A viewport image, a full-page image, and a clipped image are different outputs. Confirm that the option combination matches the artifact you intend to compare. See Puppeteer screenshot options.

3. Check viewport setup and scroll position
Record the viewport dimensions and configuration used to open the page, and compare them with the values just before capture. Puppeteer recommends setting the viewport before navigation because some sites do not expect a viewport change, such as switching to a phone-sized viewport, after loading. Certain mobile or touch settings can also cause a page reload. See Page.setViewport().

Compare those values and screenshots before and after the scroll. This helps distinguish an unexpected capture setup from a page whose content actually moved; it is a debugging technique, not a Puppeteer guarantee.

4. Wait for the page’s layout to settle
Scrolling can coincide with page-level behavior such as sticky headers, lazy loading, animations, responsive layout changes, or scroll-triggered DOM updates. Check whether the page you are capturing uses any of these and whether they change the target’s position. They are possibilities to investigate, not causes established by Puppeteer documentation.
Wait for a condition specific to the page—such as the relevant content appearing or a layout update completing—before capturing. Puppeteer locators can wait for an element’s bounding box to be stable across two consecutive animation frames before acting. That is a useful signal when investigating movement, but it is not a universal guarantee that every application has finished changing its layout before a screenshot. See Puppeteer page interactions and locators.
5. Troubleshooting checklist
- Log the capture call and options. Confirm whether the code calls
page.screenshot()orelementHandle.screenshot(), and note the values offullPage, clip, captureBeyondViewportand, for an element capture, scrollIntoView. - Record the viewport. Note the configured width, height and device scale, and keep them consistent between navigation and capture while isolating the issue. Prefer setting the viewport before navigation.
- Compare before and after scrolling. Record the scroll position and target element’s bounding box immediately before each capture. Check whether the page content moved or the screenshot settings changed.
- Inspect page behavior. Look for sticky elements, lazy-loaded content, animations, responsive breakpoints or scroll-triggered updates that could change layout.
- Wait for a relevant readiness condition. Use a page-specific signal that the content or layout is ready. Locator bounding-box stability can help assess movement, but does not prove all layout changes have stopped.
- For element captures, verify the implicit scroll. Decide whether scrolling the element into view is intended; if not, inspect the
scrollIntoViewsetting in the version of Puppeteer installed in your project.
6. Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot endpoint rather than debugging a local Puppeteer capture, ScreenshotNeo takes screenshots through one GET request. The example below saves a WebP response; create an API key and see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

The cited Puppeteer documentation references version 25.12.0. Check the documentation for the version installed in your project before relying on option defaults or changing code. The documentation describes capture and viewport behavior; it cannot identify the particular cause of a misaligned screenshot without the application’s capture code, page behavior, Puppeteer/browser version and screenshot options.
