For a low-bandwidth YouTube channel streaming through OneStream Live from OBS, start with 720p at 30 FPS, x264, CBR, and 3,000 kbps video bitrate. Set a 2-second keyframe interval, 44.1 kHz stereo audio, and the x264 veryfast preset. If OBS shows increasing dropped frames, OneStream’s OBS guide suggests lowering video bitrate to 2,000 or 1,500 kbps. These are published starting settings, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them.
Recommended OBS settings for a low-bandwidth stream
OneStream Live’s encoder guidance gives this starting configuration for an OBS stream. It favors a stable 720p30 stream over a higher frame rate or resolution that a constrained connection may struggle to deliver.

OneStream’s encoder and OBS configuration guidance is published in its encoder settings guide. Its OBS instructions specifically suggest 2,000 or 1,500 kbps if dropped frames rise.

Check upload speed and leave headroom
Measure upload speed under conditions close to the planned broadcast, rather than relying on an ISP plan’s headline download speed. OneStream advises keeping video bitrate at no more than half of available upload speed. It recommends at least 10 Mbps upload and describes 25 Mbps or higher as ideal; treat these as service guidance, not a guarantee for an individual home network.

For example, if your measured upload capacity is variable or too close to the chosen bitrate, reduce bitrate and retest instead of assuming the connection will hold a higher-quality stream. OneStream also recommends checking upload capacity and choosing the server that provides the highest upload speed in its RTMP encoder quality troubleshooting guide.
How OneStream’s settings compare with YouTube’s bitrate guidance
YouTube’s bitrate recommendations depend on ingestion codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its H.264 table recommends 3 Mbps for 720p30, matching OneStream’s 3,000 kbps starting value numerically. The recommendation rises to 8 Mbps for 720p60, so 60 FPS is a poor trade when upload bandwidth is the limiting factor.

YouTube also recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency for RTMP/RTMPS, with AAC or MP3 audio. These are ingestion recommendations, not proof that a particular low-bandwidth connection can reliably send the specified bitrate. See YouTube Help’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Set up and test before going live
- Measure upload capacity. Run an upload speed test near the time and place you plan to stream. Choose a server with the strongest upload result if that option is available.
- Configure OBS. Start with 1280 × 720, 30 FPS, x264, CBR, 3,000 kbps video, a 2-second keyframe interval, 44.1 kHz stereo audio at 128 kbps, and the
veryfastx264 preset. - Check the headroom rule. Keep video bitrate at or below half of available upload speed. If the connection cannot leave that margin, lower bitrate and/or resolution.
- Run a representative preflight. Test with movement and sound similar to the real broadcast. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages; YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring during the event.
- Adjust based on what you see. If dropped frames rise, reduce video bitrate to 2,000 kbps or 1,500 kbps. If needed, also lower resolution or FPS, then test again.
For stability, OneStream recommends Ethernet where possible. If wired networking is impractical, its guidance suggests moving closer to the Wi-Fi router. Neither change increases the upload capacity supplied by your internet connection.

Troubleshooting dropped frames and unstable delivery
- OBS reports increasing dropped frames: Reduce bitrate from 3,000 kbps to 2,000 kbps or 1,500 kbps, then run another representative test.
- Upload speed varies or is too close to the video bitrate: Lower the video bitrate and/or output resolution until the video bitrate is no more than half the available upload speed.
- Stream health reports a problem during the test: Check YouTube’s messages, verify the settings above, and retest before the event rather than waiting until the broadcast is underway.
- Wi-Fi delivery is unstable: Use Ethernet if practical; otherwise move closer to the router and test again.
- 720p30 remains unreliable after adjustments: Reduce resolution or FPS, then repeat the preflight. A higher-quality target is not useful if the connection cannot sustain it.
