If a Playwright full-page screenshot is missing the bottom of a page, first find out whether the missing content belongs to the document, a nested scroll area, or content that has not loaded yet. page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) captures the document’s scrollable extent; it does not expand every independently scrolling element or make an application render lazy content.
Start with the full-page screenshot call
Playwright’s fullPage option defaults to false. Set it to true, await the screenshot, and inspect the file produced by that run. Playwright describes this option as capturing the full scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport (Page API; see also the Screenshots guide).

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
If the output still ends early, do not assume that a longer timeout is the answer. Diagnose the scroll surface, rendering state, and layout separately.

Compare the document’s scroll height with the viewport height, then check whether the page scrolls on the document or inside a nested element. A full-page capture covers the document’s scrollable content; it does not expand an independently scrollable panel, modal, or component.

const dimensions = await page.evaluate(() => ({
viewportHeight: window.innerHeight,
documentHeight: document.documentElement.scrollHeight,
bodyHeight: document.body.scrollHeight,
documentScrollTop: document.documentElement.scrollTop,
bodyScrollTop: document.body.scrollTop
}));
console.log(dimensions);
For a nested area, inspect the suspected element’s scrollHeight and clientHeight:
const panel = await page.locator('.scroll-panel').evaluate(el => ({
scrollHeight: el.scrollHeight,
clientHeight: el.clientHeight,
overflowY: getComputedStyle(el).overflowY
}));
console.log(panel);
If the panel’s scroll height exceeds its visible height while the document does not grow, that is the distinction to act on. Playwright collaborator Dmitry Gozman described the behavior in issue #12962: “Full page screenshots do not expand any scrollable container in the page. Instead, they render the full scrollable content of the document itself.”
Capture a nested scroller deliberately
If you need the contents of one panel, scroll that element and capture it as an element rather than expecting fullPage to expand it. For example, scroll the panel to its end, then take an element screenshot:

const panel = page.locator('.scroll-panel');
await panel.evaluate(el => { el.scrollTop = el.scrollHeight; });
await panel.screenshot({ path: 'panel.png' });
This captures the element’s rendered box, not automatically a stitched image of every scroll position. If the entire panel content must appear in one image, use a page-specific approach: temporarily remove its height/overflow constraint with capture-only CSS, or scroll and capture sections and assemble them. Check the result for sticky headers, overlapping content, and virtualized rows; those require layout-aware handling.
Make lazy or scroll-triggered content render before capture
A full-page image can have the expected tall dimensions and still omit images or sections that have not been loaded or rendered. Pages may rely on IntersectionObserver, loading="lazy", scroll-triggered reveals, or virtualized lists. Rendering the document off-screen is not necessarily the same as scrolling through it in the browser.
Prepare the page by scrolling in increments, waiting for relevant content, and then capturing. The following helper is a starting point for pages that load content as the viewport advances; adjust the waits and readiness condition to match the site:
async function scrollThroughPage(page) {
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(1, window.innerHeight);
for (let y = 0; y < document.documentElement.scrollHeight; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 150));
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
}
await scrollThroughPage(page);
await page.locator('img').last().waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
The fixed delay and last-image condition are examples, not universal guarantees. Prefer a condition tied to the content you need, such as a specific locator becoming visible or an image’s complete property. For infinite scrolling, define an end condition—such as a known final item or a “no more results” marker—because the document may keep growing while you scroll.

A May 2026 Playwright issue proposed a loadLazyContent option that would scroll through a page before capture, but it was closed as a duplicate of an earlier open request. Treat it as a proposal, not a supported API guarantee; check the current Page API before relying on such an option (issue #40941).
Check for a viewport-height layout constraint
If the document itself has no height beyond the viewport, Playwright has no additional document area to include. Inspect CSS rules such as height: 100vh, fixed heights, and overflow: hidden on the document or its ancestors. A page may intentionally keep its outer document fixed while an inner region scrolls.
In issue #28027, a Playwright collaborator pointed to height: 100vh as a possible constraint and suggested trying a larger viewport. That suggestion was specific to the reported layout, not a general fix. Increase the viewport only after checking where the height constraint occurs, and verify that the change reveals the needed content without changing the page in a misleading way.

|---|---|---|
| The document scroll height exceeds the viewport, but the screenshot is not full-page | Await page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) and check that you are opening the newly saved file. |
The output includes the document’s scrollable extent. |
| A nested element scrolls while the document stays near viewport height | Capture the element or use a page-specific CSS or scroll-and-stitch method. | The full required content appears, with no overlap or clipped rows. |
| Content appears only after scrolling or loading | Scroll through the relevant area and wait for a content-specific readiness condition before capture. | Images, revealed sections, or list items are present in the saved image. |
| CSS fixes the document or a parent to viewport height | Inspect height and overflow rules; test a larger viewport or a capture-only style adjustment if appropriate. | The adjustment changes the actual constrained layout, not merely the screenshot dimensions. |
Playwright also supports screenshot options such as animation handling, scale, clipping, and a stylesheet applied during capture. Those options can help control output or presentation, but scale and styling alone do not load content that has not rendered. The regular screenshot API allows animations by default; screenshot assertions have separate defaults, so specify options explicitly when comparing captures (Page API).

Troubleshoot common failures
- The screenshot shows only the viewport: Confirm
fullPage: trueis in the awaited screenshot call, and rule out opening a stale output file. - The image is tall but sections or images are blank: The document extent may be captured while lazy or scroll-triggered content remains unrendered. Scroll through the target area and wait for the specific content.
- The page itself will not scroll: Check whether a panel or component owns the scrolling. Inspect both document and element scroll dimensions rather than relying on the visible scrollbar alone.
- The document height equals the viewport: Inspect fixed-height and overflow CSS. A viewport adjustment is a diagnostic for a particular layout, not a universal repair.
- Removing overflow or changing height breaks the page: Avoid a broad global override. Apply a narrowly scoped capture-only style, or capture the intended element with a strategy suited to its layout.
- Infinite content never reaches a stable end: Set a maximum scroll depth or wait for a known terminal marker; otherwise the page can keep loading as the capture preparation proceeds.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; for this page, the cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its clean-shot flow accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Frequently Asked Questions
Does increasing the viewport always fix a clipped full-page screenshot?
No. It can help diagnose a viewport-height constraint, but only if that constraint is the cause; inspect the page’s layout and scroll dimensions first.
Does Playwright’s fullPage option capture content inside every scrollable panel?
No. It captures the document’s scrollable content, not every independent nested scroll area.
