When OBS drops frames or disconnects during a YouTube stream, the first thing to check is the network path between your computer and YouTube—not OBS’s encoding workload. In an apartment where broadband is shared, the upload capacity available to your computer can shrink when neighbors or other household devices are using the connection. Measure upload during typical busy periods, lower the stream bitrate to fit the stable capacity you actually have, and test one change at a time.
What OBS dropped frames mean—and what they do not
In OBS, watch the dropped-frames counter and connection indicator. An increasing counter alongside a yellow or red indicator means the connection to the streaming service is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS says network-related dropped frames point to a problem between your computer and the remote ingest server, and that the software itself is extremely unlikely to be the cause. OBS sends directly to the service; it does not run an intermediary streaming server. Viewer buffering is a separate symptom: viewers can experience loading because of their own devices or connections even when OBS is not dropping frames. Measure upload capacity while the apartment is actually in use
Run upload-speed tests at times that resemble your planned stream, including periods when the apartment’s network is typically busy. Measure outbound upload, not just download: YouTube notes that inbound speed is often higher, and that even a high-speed office connection can leave an individual with limited capacity when many people share it. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and ensuring the outbound connection can carry the stream bitrate (YouTube streaming tips).

OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for stream bitrate (OBS connection guide, dated 2024). These are starting guidelines, not a promise that the same share will be available throughout a stream. With shared broadband, other residents’ activity and connection stability can change the capacity your stream can use. Begin conservatively, run a test stream, and adjust based on OBS’s counter and YouTube’s stream-health information.
Choose a YouTube bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates provide useful targets, but they are ingestion recommendations—not proof that a particular shared connection can sustain them. Select a resolution and frame rate that fit your measured, stable upload rather than choosing the highest setting first.

These figures are from YouTube Help’s encoder settings. YouTube publishes separate tables for AV1 and H.265 and for other resolutions and frame rates, so consult the current table for the codec and output you choose. Its general RTMP/RTMPS guidance specifies H.264, H.265, or AV1, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

Change one variable at a time and compare the dropped-frames counter under similar network use. This helps distinguish a weak in-home link from shared broadband or a route to YouTube’s ingest server.

- Try Ethernet. If your computer is on Wi-Fi, connect it to the router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the test. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. A cable improves only the computer-to-router link; it cannot add broadband capacity or resolve an ISP-side routing problem.
- Try another available ingest server. If OBS offers another server choice, test it to see whether the route or server selection is involved.
- Check software that can interfere with the connection. Review VPNs, security software, network-optimization utilities, and network drivers. Do not leave security protection disabled. If a temporary diagnostic indicates it is interfering, restore protection and configure an appropriate OBS exception.
- Inspect the network hardware. If drops persist, check the modem, router, cables, and other network devices for faults or poor connections.
OBS lists Network Optimizations and TCP pacing as Windows options that users have reported as helpful. They are not universal fixes. Dynamic bitrate adjustment can reduce quality when the connection is struggling, but it is a fallback rather than a repair for the underlying connection problem. Can router QoS help when other residents are online?
If you have permission to administer the shared router and have confirmed network contention, its QoS or device-priority controls may give your streaming computer priority when the network is overloaded. The feature, interface, and effect depend on the router model and firmware. TP-Link’s QoS guidance, for example, describes device prioritization on supported models as allocating that device more bandwidth during overload. QoS does not increase the total broadband capacity, and apartment residents may not have access to the router settings.

YouTube live stream keeps disconnecting: when to contact your ISP
If the bitrate is conservative, Ethernet and local software checks have not resolved the drops, and the problem persists during representative tests, collect your OBS logs and the timing and results of your upload tests. Share them with your ISP and ask it to investigate the connection and route. OBS identifies the network path, hardware, and ISP as possible causes; the counter and test timing help show when the fault occurs.
