Protect the document first, then work from least disruptive to most invasive: update Office and Windows, test winword /safe, isolate add-ins and templates, test whether one document is damaged, and only then repair Office. This sequence applies to Microsoft 365 and supported desktop editions of Word on Windows 10 and 11.
Before troubleshooting, protect your document
- If Word is still responding occasionally, wait briefly and use File > Save As to create a copy with a new name. Avoid repeatedly force-closing it.
- If Document Recovery appears, open the newest recovered version and save it separately.
- Copy documents from OneDrive, a network share, USB drive, or another synchronized folder to a local folder, then test the local copy.
- If only one file causes the failure, test a blank document before changing Word-wide settings.
Do not delete Normal.dotm casually. It can contain custom styles, AutoText, macros, keyboard shortcuts, and other customizations; rename it so it can be restored.
Identify the failure pattern
| What happens | Most useful first interpretation |
|---|---|
| Word will not launch | Startup component, add-in, template, Office files, update, or Windows problem. |
| Word opens, then closes | Startup add-in, global template, security software, or damaged installation. |
| “Not Responding” during typing or saving | Add-in, cloud/network delay, document content, driver, or current defect. |
| Only one document freezes | Corruption, embedded object, field, macro, font, or linked content in that file. |
| Printing triggers the crash | Printer driver, print queue, font, or document layout. |
| Mail merge triggers the crash | Data source, template, fields, add-in, or a release-specific Word issue. |
| Failure began after an update | Check Microsoft’s issue tracker before repeatedly repairing Office. |
| Word works only in Safe Mode | Focus on add-ins, startup files, Normal.dotm, and user customizations. |
1. Restart and install updates
Restart Windows before deeper changes. Then update Office from any Office application:
- Open Word or another Office app.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, choose Update Options > Update Now. If Update Now is missing, select Enable Updates first.
- Restart Windows when the update finishes.
Also open Settings > Windows Update (the labels can vary slightly between Windows 10 and 11) and select Check for updates. Updates can replace damaged files and improve compatibility, but they do not fix every document, driver, or third-party integration.

Before continuing, check Microsoft’s Fixes or workarounds for recent issues in Word for Windows. The page was updated in July 2026 and has listed active problems such as mail-merge crashes involving .dot/.dotm templates, Visual Basic Runtime error 4707, and Microsoft 365 sign-in error 1001. Match the listed Word version, build, update channel, and symptom; do not assume an issue affects every edition.
2. Use Office Safe Mode as a diagnostic test
Office Safe Mode disables certain startup functionality. It is different from Windows Safe Mode and helps distinguish startup add-ins, templates, extensions, corrupted resources, and registry-based customizations from wider installation problems.
Run the command
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
winword /safe(there must be a space before/safe). - Select OK.
Alternatively, hold Ctrl while double-clicking the Word shortcut and confirm the Safe Mode prompt.
Read the result
- Word works in Safe Mode: an add-in, startup file, global template, or customization is more likely. Safe Mode is a test, not a permanent repair.
- Word still fails in Safe Mode: add-ins are less likely to be the main cause. Continue with document testing, updates, Office repair, and driver checks.
- It works once, then fails normally: restart normally and continue isolating startup components.
Microsoft’s Safe Mode guidance is at Open Office apps in Safe Mode on a Windows PC.

- Open File > Options > Add-ins.
- At the bottom, set Manage to COM Add-ins, then select Go.
- Clear one add-in, select OK, close Word, and start it normally.
- Repeat with each add-in until the failure disappears; then leave the offending item disabled or obtain an updated version from its vendor.
- Use the Manage list to test Word Add-ins or Templates as well.
Common categories include PDF converters, grammar and citation tools, translation or dictation software, document-management systems, scanner integrations, antivirus Office plug-ins, VBA extensions, and Outlook-integrated add-ins. These categories are suspects, not proof that a particular vendor is defective. Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps are documented at I get a “stopped working” error when I start Office applications.
4. Check Word startup folders
Templates and add-ins can load from startup folders even when they are not listed as COM add-ins. Close Office, create a backup folder, and temporarily move suspected files rather than deleting them:
%appdata%MicrosoftWordStartup%programfiles%Microsoft OfficerootOffice16Startup(the exact installation path varies).
Test after moving .dot, .dotm, .wll, or related files, restoring them one at a time. An Office16 folder does not necessarily mean Office 2016; Microsoft uses that convention for several modern Click-to-Run releases.
5. Rename the global template, Normal.dotm
A damaged global template can make Word unstable or repeatedly prompt to save changes to Normal.dotm. Rename it instead of deleting it:
- Close Word and other Office applications.
- Press Windows key + R and enter
%appdata%MicrosoftTemplates. - Rename
Normal.dotmtoOldNormal.dotm. - Start Word. It should create a new default
Normal.dotm.
Microsoft also documents this command-line alternative:

ren "%userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftTemplatesNormal.dotm" OldNormal.dotm
Keep the old file. Renaming removes access to its custom styles, AutoText, macros, keyboard customizations, and formatting defaults until you selectively recover them with Word’s Organizer or by copying items. Add-ins, macros, startup items, and antivirus software can also cause repeated save prompts; see Microsoft’s guidance on prompts to save changes to Normal.dotm.

| Controlled test | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| A blank document also crashes | Word installation, add-in, template, driver, or Windows issue. |
| Only one document crashes | Document corruption, embedded object, field, macro, font, or linked content. |
| A local copy works but the cloud/network copy fails | Synchronization, permissions, storage, or network problem. |
| Printing fails for one file | Layout, fonts, images, or embedded objects in that document. |
| Opening embedded files fails | OLE/package handler or Office update issue. |
| Failure starts after enabling macros | Macro or security/add-in interaction. |
Recovery options
- Open Word first, then use File > Open; do not repeatedly double-click the suspect file.
- In the Open dialog, use Open and Repair when available.
- Save a recovered file under a new
.docxname. - Copy content into a new blank document. Microsoft’s documented method is Insert > Object > Text from File; omit the original document’s final paragraph mark when importing.
- In a copy, remove problematic images, fields, embedded objects, unusual fonts, or links. For macro-enabled files, test a macro-free copy only when preserving macros is not required.
Open and Repair cannot recover every damaged file, so preserve the original and any recovered versions.
7. Repair the Office installation
Repair the suite even when only Word appears broken.
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and choose Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office, select its More button, and choose Modify.
- Run Quick Repair first.
- If the problem remains, repeat the process with Online Repair.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start and choose Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office, choose Modify, and run Quick Repair.
- Use Online Repair if Quick Repair does not help.
Quick Repair is faster and replaces detected corrupted files. Online Repair is more comprehensive, requires an internet connection, may reinstall more Office components, and can require a restart. Neither option repairs a corrupt document, incompatible driver, failing disk, or third-party add-in. See Repair an Office application.

8. Check drivers and Windows-level conflicts
If Safe Mode and Office repair do not solve the problem, update or temporarily isolate integrations that Word uses:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Printer, scanner, graphics, display, and docking-station drivers.
- Antivirus or endpoint-security Office integrations.
- OneDrive or other cloud-sync clients.
- Stuck print jobs, low disk space, or failing storage.
- Recent Windows or Office updates.
Test printing to Microsoft Print to PDF or another printer, clear stuck print jobs, and compare a local document with the synchronized version. Microsoft specifically notes incompatible device drivers after updates and recommends current Windows and driver versions.
For suspected Windows system-file corruption, advanced users can open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthsfc /scannow
Allow each command to finish without interruption, restart Windows, and treat these as Windows repairs—not Word-specific fixes.

9. Use the symptom-specific branches
Word will not launch
- Restart Windows and update Office and Windows.
- Run
winword /safe. - If Safe Mode works, isolate add-ins, startup files, and
Normal.dotm. - If it fails there too, repair Office, then investigate drivers and Windows.
Word freezes while printing
Test another document and Microsoft Print to PDF, update or reinstall the printer driver, and clear the print queue. If one document alone fails, suspect its layout, fonts, images, or embedded objects.
Word freezes during mail merge
Try a smaller data source, a new template, and disabled add-ins. Check Microsoft’s current issue page because mail-merge crashes involving .dot/.dotm templates were marked as under investigation in July 2026.
Word fails after an update
Record the Word edition, build, Windows version, and update date, then check Microsoft’s known-issues page. Do not roll back updates or edit the registry unless Microsoft documents a version-specific workaround and you understand the security and support implications.
10. Last resorts and escalation
- Use Microsoft’s official uninstall troubleshooter, then reinstall Office from your Microsoft account portal.
- Contact Microsoft Support with the exact symptom, Word build, Windows version, crash timing, and steps that reproduce it.
- Contact the add-in vendor when one item is confirmed as the trigger.
- On a managed work computer, ask IT to handle repair, drivers, security exclusions, or update-channel changes.
Do not use registry cleaners, generic driver-updater programs, unknown “Word repair” utilities, or copied registry commands for a different Word version. Microsoft’s registry-reset procedure is a version-sensitive last resort: How to reset user options and registry settings in Word.
Quick Recap
Keep Word stable
- Keep Office, Windows, printer drivers, and graphics drivers current.
- Remove unused add-ins and keep known-good versions of essential ones.
- Use local copies when diagnosing files on unreliable network or sync locations.
- Maintain OneDrive version history or another backup for important documents.
- Avoid installing multiple Office versions unless your organization specifically requires it.
