Fix Microsoft Store Errors: Check Your Account, Cache, and Apps

The generic Microsoft Store error has no single confirmed cause. Follow Microsoft’s account and update checks, reset the cache, then troubleshoot the specific failure stage.

The message “There has been an error” does not identify a single cause. Work through Microsoft’s account, Windows update, Store update, and app repair checks first; then reset the Store cache and follow the troubleshooting path for the specific failure—launch, loading, or download/install.

Start with the checks Microsoft recommends

Microsoft Support advises signing in to your Microsoft account, then working through its suggested fixes in order. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.

  1. Sign in to your Microsoft account. Open Microsoft Store and make sure you are signed in with the account you use for Store apps.
  2. Install Windows updates. Check Windows Update, install available updates, and retry the Store.
  3. Update Microsoft Store. Open the Store’s Library or downloads area and select its option to get updates. The location and label can vary by Windows version.
  4. Repair the Store app, then reset it if necessary. Use Windows’ app repair/reset controls for Microsoft Store. Repair and reset are separate troubleshooting options; try repair first. Microsoft’s instructions are in Fix problems with apps from Microsoft Store.

Microsoft’s guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. If the basic checks do not clear the error, reset the Store cache next.

Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe

  1. Press Windows key + R to open Run.
  2. Enter wsreset.exe, then select OK.
  3. Wait for the blank command window to close. Microsoft says this takes about ten seconds; Microsoft Store should then open automatically.

These are the expected steps and behavior described by Microsoft in I can’t find or install an app from Microsoft Store. If the Store does not open afterward, use the dedicated Microsoft Store doesn’t open guidance.

Choose the next step by what fails

Microsoft Store will not launch

Use Microsoft’s launch-specific troubleshooting page rather than treating a launch failure as an app download problem: Microsoft Store doesn’t open.

The Store opens but content will not load

Note whether the Store is blank, stuck loading, or displays a specific message or code. The generic error sentence alone does not establish the cause. After the account, update, repair/reset, and cache checks above, keep the exact wording for further troubleshooting.

You cannot find or install one particular app

An app’s availability may depend on your country or region, family settings, or whether the app is still available. Check Microsoft’s app availability and installation guidance before assuming the Store itself is broken.

A download or automatic app update fails on a managed device

On a work- or school-managed device, firewall or proxy policy can block endpoints needed for automatic Microsoft Store app package updates. This is a targeted diagnostic for managed network scenarios, not a first step for every home user. IT staff can follow Microsoft Learn’s Troubleshoot Microsoft Store app download failures.

What to record if the error continues

Before contacting support or an administrator, write down the exact error text or code, your Windows version, and the stage where the failure occurs: opening the Store, loading its content, finding an app, downloading it, or installing it. Also note whether the device is personally managed or subject to work/school network controls. Those details help distinguish an app availability issue, a launch issue, and a download-policy problem.
