Fix MediaMTX RTMP Publish Errors When Streaming to YouTube

A step-by-step guide to diagnosing MediaMTX forwarding failures to YouTube Live, from path and key checks to RTMPS errors, timeouts, and missing audio or video.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a MediaMTX-to-YouTube failure, first check the onward forward connection: confirm the MediaMTX path is available, copy the current stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, and make sure the forwarding destination uses the matching RTMP or RTMPS endpoint. Then check TLS/port errors, timeouts, and whether the forwarded source has both audio and video. A successful publish into MediaMTX does not by itself prove YouTube received the stream.

First, identify which connection is failing

“Publishing” can mean two different legs of this setup. A publisher such as FFmpeg or OBS sends media into MediaMTX; MediaMTX can then forward an available path to YouTube. This guide addresses that second handoff. MediaMTX documents both RTMP publishing as an ingest option and forwarding to other servers (MediaMTX: Forward streams; MediaMTX: Publish streams).

Work through the checks in order. They distinguish a missing local source from a wrong destination, a transport error, and a stream YouTube cannot accept.

Check the source path before changing YouTube settings

  1. Confirm that the path exists and is receiving media. Check the MediaMTX path you intend to forward and confirm its source is connected. If the path is unavailable, fix the ingest leg first; changing the YouTube destination will not create a source.
  2. Check that it carries both video and audio. MediaMTX warns that YouTube requires both tracks and silently rejects video-only streams. Inspect the actual path being forwarded, not merely whether an upstream publisher connected (MediaMTX: Forward streams).

MediaMTX supports RTMP clients, including FFmpeg and OBS Studio, as publishers. Its FFmpeg documentation includes this local example:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream

This command publishes a looping local file to MediaMTX at rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream; it is not a command for forwarding to YouTube and does not test that onward connection. MediaMTX’s documentation also recommends RTSP when FFmpeg acts as a client to MediaMTX (MediaMTX: Publish with FFmpeg).

Copy YouTube’s current URL and key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and select the Stream tab, or open the scheduled stream you intend to use.
  2. In Stream settings, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL if that is the endpoint you want to configure. YouTube may initially show an ordinary RTMP URL.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube. Treat the key as a secret: do not include it in screenshots, public logs, support posts, or unredacted configuration.
  4. Compare the copied URL to the destination configured in MediaMTX, including its scheme, server, and port. Replace stale hard-coded examples with the current value shown for your stream.

YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. The RTMPS URL must match the one supplied in Live Control Room (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).

Check MediaMTX’s forwarding syntax

MediaMTX configures forwarding under the relevant path. Its documented pattern separates the destination URL from the stream key with #:

paths:
  mypath:
    forward:
      - dest: rtmps://CURRENT_URL_FROM_YOUTUBE#REDACTED_STREAM_KEY

Use the exact current URL copied from Live Control Room in place of the illustrative text, and substitute the key locally without sharing it. Do not paste a key into a public issue or an article example. YouTube’s URL/key fields and MediaMTX’s dest syntax are not necessarily entered as one identical string: MediaMTX uses # to separate the two parts (MediaMTX: Forward streams).

MediaMTX documentation has shown an example YouTube hostname and a certificate fingerprint, but explicitly presents endpoint details as dependent on what YouTube reported when checked. Do not treat that host or fingerprint as guaranteed current; use the endpoint displayed for your stream.

Troubleshoot by the symptom

Invalid SSL certificate or RTMPS connection error

  1. Verify that the destination URL is the current one from Live Control Room and that the scheme is rtmps://, not rtmp://, when using YouTube’s secure endpoint.
  2. Check that the server and port match the selected URL. If YouTube still reports an SSL error after the URL is verified, YouTube Help advises trying port 443 in the URL or encoder settings, consistent with the URL provided in Live Control Room.
  3. Do not disable certificate checks or add a fingerprint as a general-purpose fix. MediaMTX documents destFingerprint for a destination with a self-signed or invalid certificate, but its YouTube certificate observation is time-sensitive. Validate the actual current endpoint and certificate before considering a fingerprint (MediaMTX: Forward streams; YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).

Connection timed out

YouTube’s first checks for a timeout are to verify the server URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. Apply these checks to MediaMTX’s forwarding destination and the deployed MediaMTX version; a timeout alone does not establish one specific cause. If it persists, collect the failure logs and deployment context before changing unrelated settings (YouTube Help: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS).

YouTube shows no incoming stream, or the stream never appears

  • Verify the source path is active in MediaMTX.
  • Verify that the path contains both audio and video; YouTube silently rejects video-only streams.
  • Confirm MediaMTX is forwarding that same path to the current YouTube URL and key.
  • Check whether YouTube reports SSL, timeout, or no incoming data; these symptoms call for different first checks.

An upstream RTMP client successfully connecting to MediaMTX proves only that the ingest leg connected. MediaMTX is a live media server and proxy that can route, convert protocols, and forward streams, so the YouTube leg must be checked independently (MediaMTX: Publish streams; MediaMTX: Forward streams; MediaMTX: Introduction).
