Python Automation Scripts for Browser Tasks: A Practical Playwright Guide

A practical guide to Python browser automation with Playwright: install the package and browsers, navigate pages, locate controls, interact, and wait for the state your task needs.

To automate browser tasks with Python, install Playwright and its browser binaries, then write a script that opens a page, locates the controls it needs, performs actions, and waits for a task-specific result. Playwright offers both synchronous and asynchronous APIs; use the synchronous pattern for a straightforward script and the asynchronous one when it needs to fit into an existing asyncio application.

What browser automation does

Browser automation controls a real browser to navigate pages and interact with their interfaces. It is useful for tasks such as entering form data, clicking controls, and checking what appears afterward. That differs from simply downloading a page and parsing its HTML: a browser can execute the site’s scripts and respond to user-like interactions.

This guide uses Playwright’s Python API. Selenium is another option with a Python client for browser interaction automation, but the available documentation here does not establish a detailed feature comparison. If you are choosing between them, consider your existing project dependencies, target browser, sync or async needs, runtime management, waiting approach, and CI or enterprise policies rather than assuming one is universally better. Install Playwright and its browsers

Install the Python package and then use Playwright’s CLI to install compatible browser binaries. Installing only the package does not complete the documented browser setup.

  1. Install Playwright: pip install playwright

  2. Install its supported browsers: playwright install

  3. Run your script with the same Python environment where you installed the package.

Playwright’s browser binaries are tied to its versions. If you update Playwright or encounter a missing or incompatible browser executable, run playwright install again. For platform-specific requirements and current installation details, consult the Playwright Python installation guide and browser guide.

A complete synchronous example

This script opens a page, fills a search field, submits it, and waits for a result heading. Replace the example URL and locators with ones that match a site you are authorized to use. The example selectors are illustrative; inspect the target page and choose locators that identify its actual controls.

from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright

with sync_playwright() as p:
    browser = p.chromium.launch(headless=True)
    page = browser.new_page()

    page.goto("https://example.com")
    page.get_by_label("Search").fill("browser automation")
    page.get_by_role("button", name="Search").click()
    page.get_by_role("heading", name="Search results").wait_for()

    print(page.title())
    print(page.url)
    browser.close()

The script uses Chromium in headless mode. Playwright also documents Firefox and WebKit; the engine and installed browser binaries must match the needs of the task. A Page represents a browser tab or popup, and its locators provide the interface for finding and interacting with page elements. See Playwright Python: Getting started and Playwright Python: Pages.

Adapt the interaction to the task

Navigate to the right page

Use page.goto(url) to navigate. By default, it waits for the page’s load event, but that event alone does not mean a modern page has finished fetching data or populating its interface.

Find controls and enter data

Use a locator that describes the control you need, then call an action such as fill(). The example uses get_by_label("Search"); other locator choices include a role and accessible name, or a CSS selector when necessary. Prefer a locator that clearly identifies the intended control over a selector that depends on fragile page structure.

Click, then wait for the result

After clicking, wait for the condition the rest of your script depends on: for example, a result heading, a confirmation message, a URL change, or a specific element becoming visible. Do not treat a fixed sleep as proof that the task completed. Playwright’s navigation guide explains why content may continue loading after the load event: Playwright Python: Navigations.

Use the asynchronous API in asyncio projects

If the script runs as part of an asyncio application, use Playwright’s async API and await browser operations. This minimal example opens a page and prints its title:

import asyncio
from playwright.async_api import async_playwright

async def main():
    async with async_playwright() as p:
        browser = await p.chromium.launch(headless=True)
        page = await browser.new_page()
        await page.goto("https://example.com")
        print(await page.title())
        await browser.close()

asyncio.run(main())

Keep the sync and async APIs consistent within the relevant part of your program; choose based on the surrounding application rather than assuming async is required for every browser script. The official library guide includes both patterns.

Choose a browser deliberately

Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, along with branded Chrome and Edge channels when available. Use an engine that matches the browser behavior you need to exercise, and install the corresponding binaries with the Playwright CLI. Branded browser control can be affected by enterprise policy, particularly in managed Chrome or Edge environments. Check the browser documentation for current channel and policy details.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • Browser executable is missing or incompatible: install the browser binaries with playwright install, especially after changing Playwright versions.

  • The next step runs before content appears: wait for the specific element or state the task needs. A completed load event does not guarantee that dynamic content is ready.

  • A locator does not find the control: confirm that the page has navigated to the expected URL and that the locator matches the live interface. Prefer a clear label or role-based locator when available.

  • A branded browser will not launch in a managed environment: enterprise policies can constrain Chrome or Edge control. Check the organization’s browser policy and Playwright’s channel guidance before changing the automation approach.

  • The script works locally but not in another environment: verify that Playwright and its compatible browser binaries are installed in that environment, not only on the development machine.

Or skip the browser setup

If the task is to capture a webpage rather than interact with it, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF; for this example, it saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. It removes supported cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo and get 1,000 free screenshots a month, no card required.

Automate responsibly

Use automation only with accounts and websites you are authorized to access. Protect credentials rather than embedding them in shared scripts, and observe the site’s terms and applicable rules. These are general safeguards, not a determination of any particular site’s permission policy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Playwright with Chrome or Edge instead of its default Chromium browser?

Yes. Playwright documents branded Chrome and Edge channels when available, though enterprise policy can affect control in managed environments.

Does installing the Playwright Python package install the browsers too?

The documented setup uses a separate `playwright install` command to install compatible browser binaries.
