Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe most common fix is to register Jackson’s Java time module with the exact ObjectMapper that is deserializing the JSON. Then confirm the JSON date value matches the format that mapper expects. A correctly configured mapper commonly reads a date-only string such as "2026-10-07" as a LocalDate.
1. Check that Java time support is registered on the failing mapper
LocalDate belongs to Java’s java.time API. Jackson’s JavaTimeModule provides deserialization support for Java time types, including a LocalDateDeserializer. Add a compatible jackson-datatype-jsr310 dependency, keeping its version aligned with the other Jackson components in your project.

For a mapper you create yourself, register the module explicitly:
ObjectMapper mapper = new ObjectMapper();
mapper.registerModule(new JavaTimeModule());
This setup is documented in the JavaTimeModule source; its current branch may differ from the version used by your application. The LocalDateDeserializer API documentation for Jackson 2.6.0 also describes the dedicated deserializer.
Registration only helps if it applies to the mapper handling the failing call. If a framework configures one mapper but the failing code creates another with new ObjectMapper(), the second mapper may not have the framework’s modules.
2. Verify the JSON date shape and format
Inspect the raw JSON value for the property mapped to LocalDate. With JavaTimeModule and timestamp serialization disabled, Jackson documents ISO-8601 strings as the standard representation; a date-only value is typically "2026-10-07".

Settings matter: when WRITE_DATES_AS_TIMESTAMPS is enabled, Jackson represents LocalDate and some other local temporal types as arrays, since they cannot be portably converted to timestamps. Check the actual token and mapper configuration together. The JavaTimeModule API documentation for version 2.22.1 describes these representations.

If your input uses a pattern other than ISO-8601, first confirm that pattern is part of the API or file contract. Then configure a matching field-level format or a custom deserializer as appropriate. Registering JavaTimeModule alone does not establish a custom date format.

| Mapper setup | What to verify | Next step |
|---|---|---|
Manually constructed ObjectMapper |
Whether the code registers JavaTimeModule on this instance | Register the module explicitly, then confirm the failing call uses this configured instance. |
| Spring Boot-managed mapper | Whether the failing component uses the auto-configured mapper, and whether custom configuration changes it | Check the documentation for your Spring Boot version and inspect the mapper actually injected or used. |
| Separate or custom mapper | Whether it bypasses framework configuration or has different date settings | Configure that mapper deliberately; avoid registering modules blindly before checking its existing setup. |
Spring Boot’s Spring MVC documentation says that JacksonModule beans are automatically registered with the auto-configured JsonMapper builder, and modules participating in Java ServiceLoader are found by default. This applies to the framework-managed configuration described there, not automatically to every independently constructed mapper. Spring Boot versions and application customizations can differ, so consult the documentation matching your application’s version.

4. Trace the error in a small reproduction
- Read the full exception. Find the deserialization call site and identify the DTO property declared as
LocalDate. - Check the runtime dependencies. Confirm that
jackson-datatype-jsr310is present and its version aligns with Jackson core and databind. - Inspect the mapper at that call site. Verify whether it has JavaTimeModule registered. If it is manually created, register the module on that instance.
- Inspect the raw JSON token. Check whether the property contains a date string, an array, or another value, and compare it with the active mapper settings and any property-level format.
- Reduce the failure to one DTO and one payload. Once module registration and the expected representation are clear, add a custom format or deserializer only if the input contract requires it.
