If restarting your router did not restore internet access, inspect your Windows network settings before resetting them. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting instructions recommend an administrator Command Prompt sequence—Winsock reset, TCP/IP reset, DHCP release and renewal, then DNS cache flush—and checking the connection afterward. These steps address parts of Windows networking; they cannot fix every router, Wi-Fi, ISP, website, or firewall problem.
Inspect the active network settings first
Open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /all. Find the adapter you are actually using—such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet—and note its IPv4 or IPv6 address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers. Microsoft’s guidance for checking DNS client configuration emphasizes verifying that the IP address, gateway, DNS servers, and connection-specific DNS suffix fit the network. That guidance is written for Windows Server, so treat it as technical context rather than a consumer-specific checklist.

If an address or gateway is missing or unexpected, that clue may be more useful than immediately clearing caches or resetting the stack. Also establish whether the adapter is configured to obtain its address automatically (DHCP) or uses manually assigned settings. The release and renew commands below apply to DHCP configuration, not to repairing an incorrect static address.
Choose a test that matches the symptom
| Command | What it checks or changes | How to interpret the result |
|---|---|---|
ipconfig /all |
Displays detailed TCP/IP configuration, including addresses, gateway, and DNS servers. | Use it to identify the active adapter and inspect its configuration; it does not itself repair connectivity. |
ping <default-gateway-IP> or ping <DNS-server-IP> |
Tests whether the target responds to ping. | A reply shows that target answered. A timeout is not conclusive: a firewall or the target network may block ICMP. |
nslookup <hostname> |
Tests name lookup through DNS. | If an IP-level test works but a hostname lookup fails, investigate name resolution; that does not by itself justify resetting all networking. |
tracert <hostname-or-IP> |
Shows responding router interfaces along the route using packets with increasing time-to-live values. | An asterisk means a hop did not return the expected response; one such hop alone does not prove the end-to-end connection is broken. |
pathping <hostname-or-IP> |
Gathers latency and packet-loss information for routers and links along a route. | Use it when you need more route diagnostics than a basic trace provides. |
ipconfig /flushdns |
Clears the local DNS resolver cache. | May help with stale or negatively cached results; it does not fix a failed Wi-Fi radio, unreachable router, ISP outage, or every DNS-server problem. |
Check local reachability and DNS
Use the gateway address shown by ipconfig /all in ping <default-gateway-IP>. You can also ping the listed DNS server. Microsoft notes that ping depends on ICMP being permitted, so no reply can reflect filtering rather than a total loss of service.

To check whether a name resolves, run nslookup example.com, substituting the hostname that is failing. If appropriate for your workplace or managed network, compare it with a known public hostname; do not assume public DNS is permitted or preferred in every environment.
Read route traces cautiously
Run tracert example.com or replace the destination with a hostname or IP address. Microsoft Learn explains that tracert sends ICMP or ICMPv6 messages with incrementally increasing TTL values to determine the path. Routers may decline to return the expected time-exceeded message, appearing as *. Asterisks at an intermediate hop do not establish that the destination is unreachable. For latency and packet-loss information across routers and links, Microsoft documents pathping as another option.

Run Microsoft’s Windows networking reset sequence
For a Wi-Fi problem that persists, Microsoft Support instructs users to open Command Prompt with administrator rights, run these commands in order, and then test the connection:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Search Windows for Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the prompt if asked.
- Enter
netsh winsock resetand press Enter. - Enter
netsh int ip resetand press Enter. - Enter
ipconfig /releaseand press Enter. - Enter
ipconfig /renewand press Enter. - Enter
ipconfig /flushdnsand press Enter. - Check whether the connection works. If a command reports an error or the connection remains unavailable, note the message and continue with the targeted checks below rather than assuming the sequence repaired the cause.
The commands address different things: Winsock reset restores the Winsock catalog to a clean state and removes custom Layered Service Providers; the IP reset resets TCP/IP configuration; release and renew drop and request DHCP configuration; flushdns clears the local DNS resolver cache. The sequence is a troubleshooting measure, not a guaranteed universal fix. Microsoft’s consumer-facing instructions present it for Wi-Fi troubleshooting.

Important: DHCP versus a static address
ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew are relevant to an adapter configured to obtain an address automatically. They are not a fix for manually assigned static settings. If a static address, gateway, or DNS entry is wrong, correct the TCP/IP properties to the values appropriate for that network. If you are unsure whether the device is managed or uses special settings, check with its administrator before resetting.
For managed or specially configured devices
On a managed or server device, record the current configuration before changing it. Microsoft’s Windows Server TCP/IP guidance gives this example of saving interface configuration:

netsh -c interface dump > C:netConfig.txt
That guidance also shows restoring a saved configuration with netsh -f C:netConfig.txt. Restoration depends on interface names still matching; if they have changed, the script needs updating. This is a server-oriented example, not a step every home user needs to perform.

Find out whether the issue is local or broader
- Check another device on the same network. If several devices are offline, investigate the router, connection, or ISP rather than treating the Windows command sequence as a cure.
- If only one app or website fails while other services work, the fault may be specific to that app, site, or a firewall or policy rule.
- If the Windows device is connected to Wi-Fi but cannot reach anything, use the gateway, DNS, and route tests above to narrow down where responses stop.
Consider the network adapter driver later
Microsoft Support suggests driver troubleshooting if earlier Wi-Fi steps fail: obtain or keep a backup driver first, then uninstall the network adapter driver and restart. Windows will try to reinstall a driver during startup. This is a later option, particularly when the trouble began after a driver update; plan for the possibility that the computer may be offline until the driver is available again.
