Why Only One Device Can Connect to Your Router—and How to Find the Cause

If your router seems to allow only one device at a time, the cause could be an access-control rule, an IP-address configuration problem, or a limit imposed by a hotel, hotspot, or internet provider—not a universal one-device limit on routers. Start by identifying whether the second device cannot join Wi-Fi, joins but has no internet, or works only after another device disconnects. Those symptoms point to different causes.

First, identify what “one device at a time” means

Watch what happens when the second device tries to connect. A device that cannot join the Wi-Fi network has a different problem from one that joins successfully but cannot reach the internet. If it works only after another device disconnects, that may indicate an address or upstream service limit, but it does not prove the router has a fixed one-device capacity.

  • It cannot join Wi-Fi: check the password, saved network profile, and router access controls.
  • It joins Wi-Fi but has no internet: check IP configuration, DHCP, and the internet connection itself.
  • It works only when another device disconnects: compare the behavior on another network and check whether a hotspot, managed network, or provider limits connected devices.

Work out whether the issue follows a device or a network

Try a second phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi, then test the affected device on a different network. If only one client fails at home, focus on that device and its saved Wi-Fi or IP settings. If multiple devices fail on the same network, investigate the router or the upstream service. TP-Link recommends comparing devices to distinguish a client-specific problem from a network issue: TP-Link’s single-device Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.

Check whether the router is blocking unapproved devices

Open the router’s app or administration page and look for settings called Access Control, MAC Filtering, Allow List, Whitelist, Block List, or Deny List. Menu names vary by model. An allow-list may prevent any device not explicitly approved from accessing the network; a deny-list can block selected devices. TP-Link documents these controls in its access-control guide.

  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

If you find an allow-list or block rule, verify whether the affected device is included before changing it. Avoid disabling security controls indiscriminately; adjust only the rule that explains the symptom.

Check the affected device’s IP settings and the router’s DHCP pool

Most home networks use DHCP so the router can assign devices their network address and related settings automatically. On the device that fails, make sure IP configuration is set to automatic/DHCP unless you intentionally configured a static address. A manually assigned address with an incorrect subnet, gateway, or DNS setting can prevent communication.

TP-Link AC1200 WiFi Router Dual Band Wireless Internet Router (Archer A54) | 4 x 10/100 Mbps Fast Ethernet Ports, EasyMesh Compatible, Support Guest WiFi, Access Point Mode, IPv6 & Parental Controls
  • Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
  • Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
  • Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks

In the router’s settings, check that DHCP is enabled if this router is meant to assign addresses. Review the address-pool range and the connected-device list for signs that the affected client is not receiving an address. NETGEAR notes that disabling DHCP can leave devices needing manual IP configuration when no other DHCP server is available; its guidance applies to the models listed in its DHCP support article. Do not turn DHCP off as a trial fix.

Check for a limit imposed by the network providing internet

On hotel Wi-Fi, a public hotspot, a managed dorm network, or a service with device restrictions, the limit may sit upstream of your router—or there may be no home router involved at all. Check the network’s terms and sign-in process, and ask its operator whether it limits devices or uses device/MAC-address authentication.

TP-Link’s Archer AX3000 quick-start guide describes a specific use for Router mode: sharing an existing wired internet connection that is limited to one device at a time. That is a model-specific scenario, not evidence that all routers have a one-device cap. See the Archer AX3000 guide for its requirements and mode details.

Try low-risk connection checks before changing advanced settings

  1. Confirm the Wi-Fi password and remove or forget the saved network on the affected device, then join it again.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi off and back on, or restart the affected device.
  3. Check the router’s model-specific instructions before changing Wi-Fi channel or channel width.
  4. After checking access controls and addressing, power-cycle the modem, router, and affected device if the problem remains. TP-Link includes these checks in its troubleshooting guidance.

Choose a fix based on where the restriction occurs

Where the problem is What to do What will not necessarily fix it
One client device Check its saved Wi-Fi profile and automatic/DHCP or intentional static-IP settings; test it on another network. Replacing the router without evidence that the router is at fault.
Home router configuration Review access-control rules and DHCP settings; consult the instructions for the exact model. Changing upstream service settings that you do not control.
Hotel, hotspot, or provider network Check authentication and device-limit terms; contact the network operator. Changing home-router settings when the limit is enforced upstream.
A single-device wired connection that you are permitted to share Consider a travel router only if the service allows sharing and the exact hardware supports the required mode. Assuming a travel router bypasses a provider’s terms or a captive-portal restriction.

What to tell router or ISP support

If the problem persists, gather the router make and model, firmware version, the exact error, which device connects first, and whether the affected device receives an IP address. Note whether the same clients work on another network and whether the internet connection works when tested directly at the modem, if that test is supported by your service and equipment. Router capacity and features depend on the particular model, firmware, and operating mode, so a universal device limit cannot be inferred without those details.
