If git pull fails while your computer is using a phone hotspot, first identify whether Git cannot reach the remote or whether it fetched changes but could not integrate them. For a connection failure, check the remote’s SSH or HTTPS transport, then any proxy or VPN in the route. A merge conflict or divergent-branch message needs a Git integration fix, not a hotspot change.
Start by identifying which part of git pull failed
git pull first fetches updates from the configured remote, then integrates them—typically by merging or rebasing. The Git 2.50.0 manual describes those as separate operations. A timeout or connection error points to the fetch/network stage; a divergence or conflict reported after fetching points to the integration stage.

Before changing Git settings, confirm that the computer itself has internet access through the hotspot by opening a few ordinary websites. If those do not load, troubleshoot the phone, carrier connection, or computer’s hotspot connection first. If websites load, inspect the Git remote and use the error message to choose the next step.

Look for
git@…orssh://…, which indicates SSH, orhttps://…, which indicates HTTPS. -
Read the error closely. An SSH timeout or refusal suggests checking the SSH route; an HTTPS connection or TLS error calls for checking reachability and proxy or VPN settings. A credential or permission error is an access issue to diagnose separately.

Git supports both SSH and HTTP(S) remotes, so trying the other transport for the same repository can help determine whether the problem is specific to one network path. Use the URL form supported by your Git host and make sure you can authenticate with that transport.

If SSH is blocked, use an available alternative
Try HTTPS for the same repository
If the remote uses SSH and the connection times out or is refused, switch to the HTTPS form of that repository’s URL if the host supports it. This tests whether the issue is limited to the SSH route; it does not establish that the carrier is blocking SSH. Authentication may differ between SSH and HTTPS.

For GitHub, consider SSH over port 443
GitHub documents connecting with SSH over port 443 through ssh.github.com when the usual SSH connection is blocked. See GitHub’s SSH-over-the-HTTPS-port instructions for the required SSH configuration. This is a GitHub-specific option, not a general setting for every Git host.
For broader GitHub connection problems, consult GitHub’s connectivity troubleshooting guide. Its guidance is relevant only when GitHub is the remote host.

Inspect proxy and VPN settings without weakening TLS
A proxy or VPN can change how Git reaches the remote. To see where matching Git proxy settings come from, run:

Also check proxy environment variables and any network or VPN settings that apply to the terminal. Git’s HTTP configuration documentation says an HTTP proxy must be completely transparent: it must not modify, transform, or buffer Git requests or responses. A proxy that interferes with that traffic can prevent Git communication.
Do not disable TLS certificate verification to work around a connection error. That weakens connection security rather than diagnosing the underlying route, proxy, or certificate problem.
When a hotspot-specific cause is not clear
There is no single fix that applies to every phone hotspot. The relevant variables include the Git host, remote URL, computer and phone setup, credentials, and proxy or VPN configuration. An SSH timeout, DNS failure, TLS error, rejected credential, and post-fetch conflict are distinct symptoms; the error text and the checks above narrow down which one you have.
If connectivity is intermittent, conditions can change over time. GitHub’s troubleshooting guidance notes that congestion may affect performance and says GitHub does not throttle bandwidth per user. That does not by itself identify whether a particular hotspot, carrier, or signal condition is responsible.
