Fix Full-Page Screenshots That Cut Off Sticky Headers in Chrome

Chrome’s full-size screenshot command captures content beyond the viewport, but does not guarantee sticky-header placement. Here’s how to retest and adjust CSS temporarily.

Start with Chrome DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot command. If the header still lands in the wrong place, reload or return the page to the top and retest; if that does not help, temporarily change the header’s CSS in DevTools and capture again. Chrome documents full-page capture and CSS editing, but its documentation does not guarantee where every sticky or fixed header will appear in a full-page image.

Capture the whole page in Chrome DevTools

  1. Open the page and DevTools. You can open DevTools from Chrome’s menu or with the browser’s DevTools shortcut.
  2. Open the Command Menu with Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+P on macOS.
  3. Search for the full-size screenshot command and run it. Alternatively, in Device Mode open the More options menu and select Capture a full size screenshot.

Chrome for Developers describes this command as capturing the whole page, including content outside the visible viewport. The result is a screenshot of the page beyond the current window, not a promise that every sticky element will be positioned identically to its on-screen appearance. See Chrome DevTools Device Mode and the Command Menu documentation.

Check the page state before changing CSS

If a screenshot taken after scrolling looks different from one taken immediately after loading, reload the page or scroll to the top and capture again. That is a useful diagnostic, not a proven general fix: the scroll-related behavior comes from an individual user report, not an official explanation of Chrome’s rendering.

Also identify what is actually misplaced. Use Inspect or the Elements panel to select the apparent header, then review its declarations in the Styles or Computed pane. Check whether it is the main site header, a second sticky navigation bar, a consent banner, or an element inside an application panel. Chrome documents inspection and CSS editing in its DevTools documentation.

Try a reversible CSS adjustment

When a header is misplaced or obstructs the full-page image, a temporary CSS edit is a practical next step. This is a troubleshooting technique based on DevTools’ CSS-editing capability, not an official Chrome recipe or guaranteed fix.

Keep the header in the image

  1. Select the header in Elements and locate the rule that sets position: sticky or position: fixed.
  2. In the Styles pane, temporarily override it with position: static.
  3. Capture the full-size screenshot again and inspect the header and surrounding content.

A static header returns to normal document flow and may appear once near the top. Its effect on spacing depends on the site’s layout, so check for overlaps, gaps, or displaced content.

Omit the header

If the header should not be in the image, temporarily set display: none on the selected element and capture again. This changes the page layout for the screenshot, so verify that removing it has not hidden other needed content or changed the composition in an unwanted way.

#1 Best Overall

Reload the page to discard DevTools edits and restore the site’s original CSS. If you need only the header, use DevTools’ node screenshot rather than treating it as a repair to the full-page capture. A composite made from a node screenshot and the remaining page is a manual workaround, not a built-in full-page correction.

Choose the capture method that fits the page

Method Best for Tradeoff
DevTools full-size screenshot A normal page when you need the whole document Built in and direct, but it may not resolve a page-specific sticky-header rendering problem.
Temporary CSS override A misplaced header that should remain visible, or a header that should be omitted Reversible after reload, but can change spacing and layout.
DevTools node screenshot A single component, such as the header, or a deliberate manual composite Captures the selected node; it does not fix the full-page screenshot.

Why the header position is not predictable from the available documentation

Chrome’s DevTools Protocol describes Page.captureScreenshot as a page screenshot operation and defines captureBeyondViewport as capturing beyond the viewport. That describes capture scope, not a rule for painting sticky or fixed elements in every situation. The protocol reference does not establish that a header must be anchored at the top of a full-page result: Page.captureScreenshot protocol reference.

There is no universal cause established for a header appearing partway down an image. Page CSS, scroll context, scripts, device emulation, and other site-specific conditions may matter, but the available sources do not isolate which explains any particular failure. Treat scroll position as a testable clue rather than a confirmed cause.

Pages that scroll inside a panel

Some applications scroll a panel instead of the document. In that case, a full-document capture may not include the panel’s hidden content as expected. Inspect the element that actually scrolls. A node capture may help when one component is all you need, but there is no single documented full-page procedure established here for every nested-scroll application.

ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot with one GET request. Its capture workflow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing status reported in response headers. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools.

For this example, replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key and change the target URL if needed. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
