If text looks right in the browser but changes in an exported image, first make sure the intended web font has loaded before capture. Then verify the requested font family and weight, check that the font file can be fetched in the capture context, and identify whether your tool takes a real browser screenshot or rebuilds the page from DOM and CSS. Waiting for document.fonts.ready helps with timing, but does not prove that the specific font you wanted loaded.
Why the font changes in an HTML-to-image conversion
A browser can display a fallback font while a web font is still loading. A capture taken at that moment may preserve the fallback. The intended font can also fail to load, be unavailable to the capture process, or lack the weight or style requested by the CSS. Finally, a DOM-to-image library may reconstruct the page instead of capturing the browser’s already-painted pixels, so its rendering can differ even after fonts load.

First identify the capture method
With html2canvas, the output is built from DOM and style information; it is not a native screenshot of the browser window. Its documentation notes that it reproduces only the properties it understands, so unsupported or incompletely supported CSS can make the result differ from the page. A browser automation tool such as Playwright instead drives a browser and saves a screenshot of its rendered page. That avoids DOM reconstruction, but it does not remove the need for fonts to load or for the browser environment to be controlled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor server-side screenshots, html2canvas points to headless browser tools such as Playwright or Puppeteer. The choice depends on whether you need an image reconstructed from page markup or pixels rendered by a browser. The official references explain the distinction in the html2canvas documentation, its FAQ, and the Playwright Page API.

Wait for fonts, then confirm the right face loaded
In browser code, await the document’s font-loading set before invoking the capture function:
await document.fonts.ready;
const canvas = await html2canvas(document.body);
The HTML Standard uses document.fonts.ready in a canvas example. It is a useful point to synchronize on font loading, not a guarantee that a particular font URL succeeded or that the intended face was applied. If your code inserts content, changes styles, or adds font declarations after the wait, allow those updates and any resulting font loads to settle before capturing.

Verify family, weight, and style
- Inspect the computed style for the affected element. Confirm the actual requested
font-family,font-weight, andfont-style. - In the browser’s developer tools, check the font request and confirm it completed successfully. A CSS family name is a preference; it does not prove the named file loaded.
- Check that the page has a face corresponding to the requested weight and style. If the page asks for a weight that is not available, the browser or capture path may not render the face you expected.
- Look for network failures, incorrect font URLs, access restrictions, or differences between the page’s normal browser context and the context used by the capture.
Check html2canvas resource handling and rendering options
html2canvas documents browser content-policy limits for cross-origin resources. Its cross-origin advice is framed around images: enabling useCORS can attempt CORS image loading when the resource server permits it, and proxy can route cross-origin images through a proxy. Diagnose a font request directly; do not assume either image-oriented setting will fix a font failure.

const canvas = await html2canvas(document.body, {
useCORS: true,
onError: (error) => console.error("Capture error:", error),
windowWidth: window.innerWidth,
windowHeight: window.innerHeight
});
The example shows options to investigate, not a universal font fix. The configuration reference describes useCORS as defaulting to false, proxy as an image-resource proxy option, and onError as a way to surface resource or rendering failures. foreignObjectRendering selects an alternate rendering approach where the browser supports it; it is not a guarantee of identical output. windowWidth and windowHeight affect the rendering viewport, which can change media-query behavior and layout independently of font loading. See the html2canvas configuration reference and its FAQ.

When browser-rendered pixels matter, use browser automation
If the requirement is to match what a browser paints, capture the page with a real browser rather than relying on DOM reconstruction. Playwright’s Page API documents navigation and screenshot saving. For a page you control, a minimal Node.js example is:
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
Replace the example URL with the page you need to capture. The font wait is separate from navigation: it gives the document’s font-loading set a chance to settle before the screenshot. For dynamically rendered pages, also wait for the page-specific content or state you need; a navigation milestone alone cannot establish that every later update has finished. Playwright’s Page API documents goto and screenshot.

Make comparisons reproducible
When comparing outputs, keep the browser and runtime, operating system, installed fonts, viewport, page content, and timing consistent. Inspect both the resulting image and the font/resource logs. If the browser screenshot is correct but a DOM-to-image export is not, investigate capture-library rendering support; if both show a fallback, focus on font delivery and CSS face selection.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| The capture uses a visibly different or fallback font. | Capture begins before the web font loads, or the requested face failed to load. | Await document.fonts.ready, inspect the font request in developer tools, and verify family, weight, and style. |
| The browser looks correct, but html2canvas does not. | html2canvas reconstructs the page from DOM and CSS rather than taking native browser pixels; a needed property may not be supported as expected. | Check the library’s documented limitations. If browser-rendered fidelity is the requirement, capture with browser automation. |
| A font request fails in the capture context. | The font URL, network access, or resource policy differs in that context. | Inspect the font request itself and the server response. Do not treat image proxy or CORS settings as proof that fonts are fixed. |
| The text or layout changes at capture time. | The capture viewport may trigger different media queries, or page updates may still be in progress. | Set and record the viewport; wait for the specific content and styles required before capture. |
| html2canvas reports a resource or rendering issue. | The library encountered a failed resource or rendering path. | Use onError to expose errors, then inspect the relevant resource and configuration. Treat foreignObjectRendering as an alternative path to evaluate, not a guaranteed fix. |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its API returns a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
