Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteRender untrusted SVG data in a short-lived, isolated worker with a static renderer such as rsvg-convert. Keep the renderer’s safety limits enabled, restrict the worker’s filesystem and network access, and impose your own CPU, memory, input-size, and wall-time limits. Choose PNG when you need a pixel screenshot; PDF is a document output that needs separate downstream review.
Why an SVG needs care even when the output is an image
SVG is XML-based content that can include references and active features. Opening an SVG as a document is not the same security context as using it as an image: browser restrictions that apply in image contexts are not a universal guarantee for every way an SVG can be loaded. See MDN’s SVG-as-an-image guidance and its SVG linking guidance.

For a conversion service, treat the submitted bytes as hostile input. Do not serve the original SVG inline or open it in a user’s browser merely because it has been converted once. MDN specifically warns about accepting and executing arbitrary URLs in its documentation on SVG script references.
Choose the output before you convert
PNG for a raster screenshot
PNG is the natural choice when the deliverable must be pixels: for example, a preview image, thumbnail, or image displayed in an interface. Set a maximum output size and verify the resulting dimensions before storing or publishing it. A huge requested canvas can consume substantial resources even when the input file is small.

PDF for a document workflow
rsvg-convert and CairoSVG both document PDF output, but a PDF is not a raster screenshot. Conversion alone does not certify a PDF as safe for every downstream viewer, parser, or processing service. If PDF is required, treat it as a separate document-output path and review how the next system handles it.
Use a static renderer and keep its safeguards enabled
librsvg describes its scope as rendering non-animated, non-scripted SVG documents and says it does not execute scripts or animation. Its converter, rsvg-convert, supports PNG and PDF output. The commands below show a direct conversion; run them inside the isolated worker described in the next section, not as a privileged service command on an unrestricted host.

Convert an input file to PNG
rsvg-convert -o output.png input.svg
Convert to PDF when a document is actually needed
rsvg-convert --format=pdf -o output.pdf input.svg
To bound raster dimensions, specify width and height using the converter’s documented options. It supports explicit sizing and proportional scaling; confirm the exact flags for the installed release with rsvg-convert --help and pin or verify that release in deployment. The project’s converter documentation is maintained on the main branch, so do not assume its current options match every older installed binary.
Do not enable rsvg-convert --unlimited for untrusted input. The converter documentation says that option disables safeguards. Keep the XML parser and embedded-image protections active.

Isolate each conversion from the rest of your service
Renderer protections reduce risk, but do not turn arbitrary input into trusted input. The librsvg security guide describes network-disabled XML parsing and disabled external entities, while also noting that some external file references may be processed. It also says librsvg does not set total CPU and memory limits. Apply defense in depth at the worker or container boundary.
- Accept bytes, not a caller-chosen path or URL. Enforce a maximum request-body size before parsing. If a temporary file is necessary, create it in a private working directory with a generated internal name, not a path derived from the upload’s filename.
- Run a disposable, unprivileged worker. Give it no network access, a minimal read-only filesystem view, and access only to the input and output locations it needs. Do not mount application secrets, user home directories, or unrelated files into the worker.
- Set external resource policy deliberately. Do not assume that blocking XML network access also blocks every file reference. Remove unnecessary access to host files and deny outbound networking at the worker boundary.
- Set independent resource limits. Bound input bytes, wall-clock time, CPU, memory, process count, output dimensions, and output bytes. Terminate the worker on timeout and discard partial output. The renderer’s own parser safeguards do not replace these application-level limits.
- Keep unsafe modes off. Do not use
--unlimitedwith librsvg. With CairoSVG, do not use--unsafe: its documentation warns that unsafe mode resolves XML entities and permits very large files, creating XXE and denial-of-service risks. - Validate the result before release. Check that the conversion completed, that the output is the expected format, and that its dimensions and size are within your limits. Treat a failed, truncated, or unexpectedly large result as a conversion failure.
There is no single container configuration that fits every deployment. Choose limits based on your service’s upload policy and capacity, enforce them outside the renderer, and test the actual installed renderer version under those limits.

Common failures and how to respond
- The conversion times out or is killed. Treat it as an unsuccessful job, discard partial files, and return a controlled failure. Review your input and output limits; do not respond by turning on unlimited rendering.
- An external image or reference is missing. Decide whether external resources are allowed at all. For untrusted uploads, the safer default is to deny access and accept that externally referenced content may not appear. Do not grant broad file or network access just to make one image render.
- The output is blank or has unexpected dimensions. Validate the result and enforce a maximum canvas. Check the chosen sizing and the SVG’s declared dimensions or viewBox; use the converter’s sizing documentation for the installed version.
- CairoSVG rejects input or an example only works with
--unsafe. Do not enable unsafe mode for an upload service. Reject or sanitize the input under a separately reviewed policy, or use a conversion path whose supported content meets your needs. - A PDF is accepted by the renderer but rejected later. Conversion success only establishes that output was produced. Validate the PDF in the actual downstream workflow and review the viewer or processing chain independently.

For a website screenshot—not as a secure converter for arbitrary SVG bytes—ScreenshotNeo takes a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say which page verdict and billing result applied. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for MCP clients including Claude and Cursor. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
One-call website capture, using the documented API parameters:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. This call captures a webpage URL; it is not a substitute for parsing and safely converting an untrusted SVG upload in an isolated worker. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
