Fix “Fingerprint Device Could Not Be Found” in Windows 11

When Windows 11 cannot find a fingerprint scanner, check whether Device Manager detects it before changing drivers, ESS settings, or buying another reader.

If Windows 11 says your fingerprint device could not be found, first check whether Windows detects the sensor. A fingerprint that is detected but will not read is a different problem from a sensor missing in Device Manager, and the message alone does not identify the cause. Use your PIN or password to sign in while you troubleshoot.

First, identify the reader and the kind of failure

Determine whether the reader is built into the PC, attached to a detachable keyboard, or connected by USB. If it is an external reader, confirm its manufacturer says it supports Windows Hello and follow the maker’s connection instructions.

Microsoft’s Windows Hello guidance says fingerprint sign-in requires a device with a fingerprint reader. That prerequisite does not mean every reader will work with every PC configuration, nor that an additional reader will fix a built-in sensor that Windows cannot detect. Microsoft: Configure Windows Hello.

Check whether Windows detects the fingerprint sensor

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Look for the fingerprint reader, often listed under Biometric devices. Check whether it appears and whether Device Manager shows a status or error code. If you cannot identify it, check the PC maker’s documentation for your model.
  3. If an error code is shown, use Microsoft’s code-specific Device Manager guidance. If Windows cannot provide the needed driver, get the current, model-specific driver from the PC or sensor manufacturer. Do not install a driver package intended for a different model. Microsoft: Device Manager error codes.

If the sensor is absent, the error code and your exact PC or reader model are important clues. The message by itself does not establish whether the cause is a driver, a connection, compatibility, or hardware failure; consult the manufacturer’s support for that model rather than assuming a replacement reader will repair it.

If you use an external reader, check ESS compatibility

Windows 11’s Enhanced sign-in security (ESS) can affect third-party fingerprint readers. Microsoft says an external reader must support ESS to work when ESS is enabled. The applicable setup steps differ between Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer and version 23H2; availability may also depend on rollout and organizational policy. Check Microsoft’s current instructions for your version before changing a setting: Configure Windows Hello.

Disabling ESS may allow a non-ESS reader to be used, but Microsoft warns that doing so removes existing ESS enrollments and associated credentials. Those can be reprovisioned after setup. Do not disable ESS without considering that consequence, and note that an organization may prevent use of non-ESS devices. If this is a managed work or school PC, ask the administrator before changing security settings.

  • Plug-and-Play Fingerprint Login - No extra app is needed on most genuine Windows systems. Insert the USB fingerprint scanner, set up fingerprint sign-in through Windows Hello, and unlock your PC without typing long passwords every time.

  • Compact Scanner for PC & Laptop + Multi-User Support - Small, lightweight USB design works well for desktops, laptops, office PCs and shared home computers without built-in fingerprint sensors. Supports multiple Windows accounts and up to 10 fingerprints per user account. Smart-ID security helps protect saved passwords and encrypted folders with fingerprint access.
  • Important Notes — Please Read Before Purchase - Support for Win10/11 32/64 bit original system. Not fit for the streamlined version. The Lite version has trimmed the biometric component, the fingerprint login device will not be able to recognize the Hello fingerprint option. It merely supports Windows Hello, does not fit for encrypting USB drives/files, and can merely support Windows system. It is recommended to prioritize plugging into the USB 2.0 interface of the motherboard. USB 3.0 docking stations are prone to power supply/interference and unstable recognition.

If Windows sees the reader but your finger is not recognized

When the reader appears in Device Manager and has no device error, but scanning or recognition fails, try Microsoft’s basic fingerprint guidance:

  • Keep the reader and your finger clean and dry.
  • Check for a driver update for the device.
  • Use another sign-in method, then remove and register fingerprints again, presenting the finger at varied angles.

These steps address scan or recognition problems; they do not explain a reader that is absent from Device Manager. Microsoft: Troubleshoot Windows Hello.

If the fingerprint reader is on a Surface

For Surface devices, check for driver and firmware updates in the Surface app. If Windows Hello still fails, sign in with your PIN or password and set up Hello again. If the reader is part of a detachable keyboard, detach and reattach the keyboard before retrying. Follow Surface-specific instructions rather than applying steps meant for another PC. Microsoft: Troubleshoot Windows Hello on Surface.

Should you buy a USB fingerprint reader?

An external Windows Hello-compatible USB reader is an option if your PC lacks a usable built-in reader. Before buying, verify that the specific reader supports Windows Hello, whether it supports ESS if ESS is enabled, and whether your Windows version and any organization policy allow it. If your built-in sensor is missing or shows an error in Device Manager, investigate that device and its model-specific support first. Microsoft’s guidance does not establish that a USB reader will fix a built-in sensor’s detection problem.
