If FFmpeg disconnects while publishing a YouTube Live stream from an OVHcloud VPS, first find out which layer failed: the FFmpeg process, its RTMP/RTMPS output, YouTube’s ingest, the VPS itself, or the network route between them. A disconnect alone does not show that OVHcloud is at fault. Preserve the logs and YouTube stream-health messages, then test one change at a time.
Identify what actually stopped
Before changing the command, capture evidence from the same failure window. It can distinguish a process exit from a failed write, an unhealthy YouTube ingest, or an interruption elsewhere.

- Save the complete FFmpeg startup banner, including version and build configuration.
- Keep the full command, but redact the YouTube stream key and any other credentials before sharing it.
- Save FFmpeg’s log lines from shortly before and after the incident, with timestamps.
- Record whether FFmpeg exited, remained running with a connection or write error, reconnected, or continued without YouTube receiving the stream.
- Note the matching YouTube Live Control Room stream-health message and the time it appeared.
These observations do not by themselves identify the cause, but they tell you which checks to prioritize. Do not post a stream key in a ticket, screenshot, public log, or command example.
Check the active YouTube event and encoder settings
Confirm that FFmpeg is publishing to the ingest endpoint and stream key for the event that is currently live. A key or endpoint mismatch can look like a network problem from the publisher’s side. YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health while live. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the stream sent to Google’s servers. YouTube Live encoder settings.

Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps; for 1080p at 60 fps, it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not measurements of your VPS’s available bandwidth. Check the guidance for your exact format rather than applying these examples to a different codec or frame rate.
Measure sustained outbound capacity from the VPS and allow for stream overhead. Do not assume a plan has enough usable bandwidth based on its name or advertised capacity alone. Compare the measured capacity with the configured bitrate and check YouTube’s stream-health feedback during a controlled test.

Interpret FFmpeg’s network options carefully
FFmpeg documents RTMP as multimedia streaming over TCP/IP. Its RTMP protocol options include tcp_keepalive, which enables the operating system’s basic TCP keepalive mechanism to detect dead peers and help maintain long-lived idle connections. Platform-specific keepalive tuning remains at operating-system defaults. FFmpeg also documents the generic rw_timeout option, which sets the maximum wait for network read or write operations in microseconds. FFmpeg protocol documentation.
These options may make a stalled connection easier to detect or diagnose; they do not repair a broken route, overloaded VPS, invalid stream key, or server-side termination. If you test them, change one setting at a time and compare logs and stream-health results. Keep the exact command and FFmpeg build with each test so the result can be reproduced.

Do not apply HTTP input retries as an RTMP publishing fix
FFmpeg documents options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, and reconnect_on_network_error in the context of its HTTP protocol. They should not be presented as guaranteed recovery for a command publishing an RTMP or RTMPS output. Check the option’s documented protocol context before adding it to a publishing command.
Test FIFO output recovery as a separate strategy
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can buffer output and attempt recovery after temporary failures. A development-list example uses -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, -recovery_wait_time 1, and -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 with an RTMP destination. Treat this as a configuration to validate, not a promise of seamless recovery. Confirm that your installed build supports the options and test under controlled conditions for recovery delay, buffered or dropped media, timestamp continuity, audio/video continuity, and YouTube’s handling. Check the VPS and network path before blaming OVHcloud
The fact that the server is an OVHcloud VPS does not establish that the provider caused the disconnect. To narrow the cause, correlate the failure time with measurements and configuration from the actual plan, region, host, and route.
- Resources: Check CPU and memory pressure, process restarts, and whether the media input stalled or the disk became a bottleneck.
- Firewall and egress: Review outbound firewall rules and confirm the publishing connection is permitted and remains stable.
- Route behavior: Record connection failures and route behavior over time; look for repeatable correlation with disconnects rather than assuming a route fault from one event.
- Provider events: Compare timestamps with relevant provider status or incident information for your service and location.
Without the VPS plan and region, firewall configuration, resource measurements, route observations, and incident records, the cause cannot be localized to OVHcloud. Keep the diagnosis specific to evidence from the affected server.

- Durable USB Capture Card: The aluminum alloy casing easily dissipates heat and is lightweight while effectively shielding against EMI, ensuring stable signal transmission. The built-in cable features 26AWG (2C) + 30AWG (1P) tinned copper conductors, ensuring excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance, enhancing durability, and reducing signal loss
Run controlled comparisons and keep useful records
If testing RTMP against RTMPS or comparing output-recovery configurations, use the same stream conditions and change one variable at a time. Record the FFmpeg version and command for every run, with secrets redacted. Compare connection stability over the same duration, recovery time, dropped or lost media, timestamp and audio/video continuity, CPU and network use, and YouTube stream-health messages. Neither protocol guidance nor an example recovery configuration establishes which option will perform better on your VPS; the result has to come from a controlled test on your setup.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the objective is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than diagnose or operate your own FFmpeg publisher, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream a camera feed. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on, and the service is designed to recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.
