For recorded lessons with matching stream layouts, codecs and time bases, put the files in a correctly formatted concat playlist and place -stream_loop -1 before that playlist’s -i option. If the files differ, normalize them or use the concat filter and re-encode. A playlist parsing error, incompatible media, bad duration metadata and a YouTube ingest problem are different failure types; identify which stage is failing before changing the command.
Start by identifying which stage fails
FFmpeg can fail while reading the playlist, opening a listed file, joining incompatible streams, calculating timestamps, or sending the encoded output to YouTube. A command that parses successfully can still produce artifacts at file boundaries, and a clean local output does not guarantee that YouTube will accept the ingest settings.
- Playlist errors: the manifest header, directives, paths or permissions are wrong.
- Concat errors: the lesson files do not have compatible streams, codecs or time bases.
- Boundary errors: durations, start times or timestamps do not line up as expected.
- Live ingest errors: the output protocol, codec, keyframe interval, bitrate or stream key is unsuitable.
The exact FFmpeg version, operating system, media properties and error text determine the final diagnosis. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated and may not exactly match an older installed build.
Choose the concat method that fits the lessons
Use the concat demuxer for compatible files
The concat demuxer reads packets from each listed file in sequence without re-encoding. FFmpeg’s documentation says, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Matching the filename extension or video codec alone is not enough; check stream count and order, codecs, time bases, frame rate, dimensions, pixel format, audio layout and duration.

Normalize or use the concat filter for different files
If files have different stream layouts or parameters, create compatible intermediate files first, or use the concat filter to join decoded inputs and re-encode. This costs more processing than packet copy, but it gives you a way to produce a consistent output from heterogeneous sources. Use explicit stream mapping and set the output’s intended video and audio properties.
Do not confuse the concat protocol with the demuxer
The concat protocol joins resources at the file/container level and is limited to compatible formats. For lesson playlists that need streams joined in sequence, the demuxer is usually the relevant method; when decoded inputs must be combined and re-encoded, use the filter.
Build and validate the playlist
Use the exact script format
A minimal playlist looks like this:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'lesson-01.mp4'
file 'lesson-02.mp4'
The automatic-detection header must be the exact first line, with no extra spaces or byte-order mark. The playlist is a text script, not a video file. If you want FFmpeg to auto-detect the format, use an .ffconcat filename and preserve that header.
Check paths and access
Pass the playlist as an input. For example:
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i lessons.ffconcat -c copy joined.mp4
-safe 0 is often needed for absolute paths or paths outside FFmpeg’s safe subset. Use it only with a playlist you trust: it relaxes path safety checks and does not repair malformed lines. Check quoting or escaping for paths with spaces or special characters, spelling, line endings, the current working directory, and file permissions if FFmpeg reports an unknown directive or cannot open a listed file.

Check media compatibility and boundary timestamps
Inspect every input
Use ffprobe on each lesson and compare stream count and order, codec, time base, frame rate, dimensions, pixel format, audio layout and duration. Differences in those properties can make demuxer-based packet concatenation fail even when the files appear similar in a media player.
Investigate errors that occur at joins
With compatible inputs, -c copy avoids re-encoding. It is not a universal fix: the output muxer may reject packet parameters or timestamp behavior at a boundary. If warnings or visible glitches appear only when one lesson changes to another, inspect stream start times and audio/video durations, then test a normalized or re-encoded sequence.
The demuxer advances later timestamps using the preceding file’s duration. Incorrect or missing duration metadata, or a truncated file, can therefore cause timestamp gaps, overlaps or other artifacts after parsing succeeds. Where a file’s duration is wrong or unavailable, a per-file duration directive in the concat script can override it. Confirm the actual media duration before setting an override; do not guess.
Successful concatenation does not create seamless transitions. Hard cuts, silence or audio gaps in the source lessons remain unless you edit or otherwise prepare the source material.

Loop the whole playlist as one input
For a real-time live workflow, a representative command shape is:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i lessons.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -c:a aac
-f flv "$INGEST_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
-stream_loop -1 means repeat the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so put it before the playlist’s -i. Here the playlist is treated as one input and looped as a whole. -re paces file input in real time for streaming; it does not fix incompatible files or timestamp errors.
This is a starting shape, not a command guaranteed to fit every source or YouTube setup. Replace the encoder, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe settings, mapping and destination as needed. Keep the stream key private; do not put it in public logs or examples. If you want to try stream copy, -c copy may work only when the inputs and output muxer accept the packet streams and timestamp sequence. If output timestamps fail or playback freezes at loop boundaries, normalize or re-encode and test a finite run before leaving it unattended.
Configure and verify YouTube ingest separately
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video plus AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p60 as recommended bitrates; these are platform recommendations for those resolutions and frame rates, not universal settings for every stream. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the resolution and frame rate you choose.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Unknown directive or playlist format error | Incorrect header, malformed line, wrong format detection or quoting. | Check that the first line is exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no byte-order mark or extra spaces. Verify each file line and quote or escape special characters. |
| FFmpeg cannot open a listed file | Wrong path, working directory, permissions or safe-path restriction. | Check spelling and access for every file. Use -safe 0 only for a trusted playlist when paths require it. |
| Stream parameters or codec errors at a join | Inputs have different streams, codecs, time bases or related parameters. | Compare the files with ffprobe. Normalize them to matching streams or use the concat filter and re-encode. |
| Timestamp warnings, glitches or freezes at boundaries | Incorrect duration metadata, different start times or incompatible packet timing. | Check durations and start times, inspect muxer warnings, and test a normalized sequence. Add a per-file duration override only when you know the correct duration. |
| Local output works but YouTube rejects or degrades the stream | Ingest URL or key, protocol, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval or stream health issue. | Check Live Control Room and the current YouTube encoder guidance. Test with representative video and audio and monitor stream health. |
