If your AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones sound muffled only after you join a Discord voice call, the headset may have switched into its lower-quality microphone-and-listening mode. That is different from Discord choosing the wrong output device. First identify whether the issue is call-triggered quality loss, missing microphone input, or no sound; then follow the matching checks below.
What kind of Discord audio problem are you having?
Start by noticing when the problem occurs. A quality drop that begins as soon as you join a call or activate the headphone microphone points to Bluetooth call behavior. If you cannot hear anyone, or others cannot hear you, check Discord’s device selection, permissions, and mute settings first.

- Muffled or quieter sound only during calls: the headset may have switched to a Bluetooth profile that supports microphone use.
- You hear Discord, but your microphone is missing or silent: check the input device, microphone access, and mute controls.
- You hear nothing: check the output device, output level, and deafen or mute state.
- Choppy or intermittent sound: verify device selection and connection, then use Discord’s broader troubleshooting steps if needed.

Why do AirPods sound muffled when you join Discord?
Bluetooth headphones can use one mode for higher-quality listening and another for listening while speaking through the headset microphone. Discord says many Bluetooth headsets switch to a lower-quality “headset” profile when a voice call starts because it supports microphone use with low latency. Apple describes the same trade-off on Mac: using a Bluetooth headphone’s microphone changes the audio mode, which can reduce sound quality and volume.

That change alone does not mean your AirPods are defective or that Discord selected the wrong headphones. Discord’s explanation is in its Bluetooth Headset Quality Issues article. Apple explains the behavior for Mac in If sound quality is reduced when using Bluetooth headphones with your Mac.
Check Discord’s input, output, and mute settings
In Discord desktop or browser, open User Settings → Voice & Video. The exact labels or screen positions may vary by client version.
- Under Input Device, select the microphone you intend to use. To use the AirPods microphone, select the AirPods; if you use a separate microphone, select that instead.
- Under Output Device, select your AirPods or other intended headphones.
- Check the input and output volume levels. Use Discord’s microphone test if it is available in your client.
- Confirm that you are not muted or deafened in the call, and check whether a server or channel mute is preventing you from speaking.
- In your operating system’s privacy or microphone settings, confirm that Discord is allowed to use the microphone.
Discord recommends checking mute and deafen states, microphone access, and the selected devices before moving to advanced troubleshooting. Its troubleshooting guide covers desktop and browser checks.

If your Bluetooth microphone is not detected
First verify that the intended input device is selected in Discord and that the operating system grants Discord microphone access. Check the headset’s hardware mute control, if it has one. For a wired microphone or headset, try another available port or connection. Restart Discord and, if needed, restart the computer.
If the input still does not appear, follow Discord’s microphone troubleshooting steps. Options such as changing the audio subsystem or packet priority are more advanced; try them only after checking the device, permissions, and basic connection.
Mac: restore Bluetooth headphone sound quality
Apple’s microphone-mode guidance applies to Mac, not Windows. If sound quality remains reduced after you stop using the Bluetooth headphone microphone, Apple recommends closing apps that may be using it, ensuring Sound settings are not left open, and reselecting the headphones:

- Close apps using the Bluetooth headphone microphone, including a voice-call app if you are no longer using its microphone.
- Close the Mac’s Sound settings window if it is open.
- Open the Mac sound output controls and select the Mac’s internal speakers.
- Select the Bluetooth headphones again as the output.

Try a separate microphone while keeping Bluetooth headphones
If you want to keep Bluetooth headphones for game or music playback while talking, try selecting a separate microphone as Discord’s input and leaving the headphones selected as output. Discord provides separate input and output selectors, but whether this avoids the Bluetooth profile change depends on the computer, operating system, headset, and app behavior. Treat it as a setup to test, not a guaranteed fix.

Discord’s general troubleshooting guidance applies to desktop and browser clients, but the Mac steps above are specific to macOS. The available guidance does not establish a universal Windows procedure for disabling a Bluetooth microphone profile, so avoid following Mac control-panel instructions on a Windows PC. Menu names and available device controls also vary across operating systems and clients.

AirPods can be used as a Bluetooth headset with a non-Apple device, according to Apple’s AirPods compatibility guidance. That does not guarantee that every computer or phone will expose separate input and output choices or avoid call-related quality changes.
When basic checks do not solve it
Once you have confirmed the symptom and selected the intended devices, Discord’s desktop guide suggests updating Discord and the operating system, restarting, and reviewing audio drivers on Windows. You can also reset Voice & Video settings. Advanced options in Discord’s guide include checking Krisp noise suppression and, on Windows, microphone enhancements or the audio subsystem; change these only when basic checks have not resolved the issue.
