If an automated screenshot unexpectedly looks dark, first check the color-scheme preference the browser gives the page. In Playwright, set the intended scheme explicitly, look for later overrides, and verify it with matchMedia before capturing. If the page reports a light preference but still renders dark, investigate the website’s own theme state.
Check what color scheme the page is receiving
A screenshot records the page as rendered; the capture step does not necessarily choose the site’s theme. A browser context or page can expose prefers-color-scheme: dark, prompting a site that responds to that media query to render dark styles.

In Playwright, inspect the project or test configuration, browser context and page creation options, and any calls to page.emulateMedia. These are all places where the preference can be set. A later page-level emulation call can override an earlier choice. Playwright documents these configuration paths in its Emulation guide and Page API.

Set colorScheme to 'light' for the screenshot run, then check the media query before capturing. For a direct page-level override:

If you configure the scheme in a test or browser context instead, verify that no later call changes it before the screenshot. Playwright’s documented supported emulated values are light and dark; null disables color-scheme emulation, while no-preference is deprecated. Use an explicit light or dark value when the test needs a predictable result.
Reproduce the preference in Chrome DevTools
- Open Chrome DevTools and open the Rendering panel. If it is not visible, use DevTools’ panel menu to find it.
- Under the
prefers-color-schemecontrol, selectlightordark. - Refresh the page and compare its appearance with the automated capture.
This separates a browser-preference issue from a difference in automation setup. Check whether Chrome’s Automatic Dark Theme effect is enabled: Chrome documents that it sets the emulated scheme to dark and disables the ordinary preference selector. If the preference is light but the page still looks dark
A light media-query result does not prove that the site must look light. Some websites have their own theme control or persisted application state. Inspect the affected application’s theme initialization, stored settings, and controls; this is a site-specific diagnostic, not a universal explanation for dark screenshots.

For comparison, web.dev describes using Puppeteer to create screenshots in both dark and light modes: prefers-color-scheme: Hello darkness, my old friend. The same diagnostic principle applies: deliberately set the mode and compare what the page renders.

Compare inconsistent screenshot runs
When two captures differ, record these details for each run:
- Automation framework and browser/API used.
- Whether color scheme was set at the project/test, browser-context, or page level.
- The intended value: light or dark.
- Whether an emulation call ran after the initial configuration.
- The result of
matchMedia('(prefers-color-scheme: dark)').matchesimmediately before capture. - Whether Chrome DevTools Automatic Dark Theme was active during manual reproduction.
This comparison helps distinguish a preference mismatch from a site-level theme setting without assuming the screenshot file itself caused the difference.

Why this preference matters
The HTTP Archive’s 2024 Web Almanac reports that 12% of desktop and mobile websites used the prefers-color-scheme media query in 2024, up from 8% in 2022. That figure measures media-query adoption, not complete dark-mode support across those sites. Read the 2024 Web Almanac.
