When Android PC game streaming misbehaves, isolate the failure before changing settings: check whether Android recognizes the controller, whether the streaming app passes input to the PC, whether the game maps it correctly, and whether network or video-processing delay is causing the poor response. This sequence helps narrow the cause without assuming that every stutter is a Wi-Fi problem or every missed button is a controller fault.
Start by identifying which part of the setup is failing
Controller input travels through a chain: controller → Android → streaming app → host PC or virtual controller → game. A failure at any point can look like the same symptom in-game. Streaming performance has a similarly layered path: the game renders a frame, the PC encodes it, the network carries it to Android, and the client decodes and displays it.
- Buttons do nothing: check Android recognition, app input, then host and game mapping.
- Input works but arrives late: compare controller behavior with network and stream latency.
- Video stutters or breaks up: inspect network consistency and stream processing rather than relying only on a bandwidth reading.
Confirm the streaming setup and compatibility
Steam Link on Android
Valve’s Steam Link support page specifies Android 5.0 or newer, a computer running Steam, and recommends a 5 GHz wireless router. For local setup, the Android device and host computer should be on the same network. These are Steam Link requirements and recommendations; they should not be treated as universal requirements for other streaming apps.
Valve lists Steam Controller, Xbox One S Controller, DualShock 4 on Android 9.0 or newer, Razer Kishi, and Raiju Mobile as supported inputs on that page. It also notes that other controllers may work, so an unlisted device is not proof of incompatibility.

Moonlight on Android
Moonlight’s Android listing describes streaming from PCs using NVIDIA GeForce Experience or Sunshine and sending mouse, keyboard, and controller input from Android to the PC. It lists PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Android gamepads. Moonlight recommends a strong 5 GHz wireless connection for Android and Ethernet from the PC to the router where possible.
Moonlight’s setup guide warns that public or corporate Wi-Fi may block streaming apps and that firewall rules can interfere with local discovery or streaming. The same guide cautions that some controllers can have latency or disconnection issues on Android; test the specific controller with the Android device rather than assuming every model in a supported family behaves identically.

Trace controller input from Android to the game
- Check Android recognition. Connect the controller and verify that the device itself responds to its input, using an Android game or input test available to you. If Android does not recognize it, the streaming client cannot reliably pass its buttons through.
- Check the streaming app. Open the stream and see whether the app registers the controller. If possible, compare Bluetooth with a wired connection that your Android device and controller support. This comparison can help isolate connection behavior; Bluetooth is not automatically the cause.
- Check the host and game mapping. If Android and the client see input but the game does not, inspect the host’s controller configuration and the game’s selected input device or bindings.
For Sunshine streams where input reaches Steam but fails in a game, Sunshine’s troubleshooting guide suggests adjusting Steam controller support configuration, including trying only generic controller support, and checking whether another controller connected to the host takes precedence. Treat these as targeted checks for that host/game situation, not a fix for every Android controller problem.
Make the Wi-Fi path more consistent
For real-time streaming, a stable path matters more than headline bandwidth alone. Sunshine’s troubleshooting documentation, version 2026.214.30634, says the network path’s most important characteristics are stability and consistency: low latency with low variance and minimal or no packet loss.

- Hall Effect Joysticks and Triggers
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light and tactile.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons
- Profile button. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings. Turbo function.
- Use diagnostics before changing several settings. If available, enable Steam’s Remote Play performance overlay and note whether it identifies a network-related problem. Steam’s network settings guidance recommends the overlay for diagnosing Remote Play performance.
- Reduce wireless competition. Steam notes that simultaneous wireless traffic between the PC, router, and client can interfere and make streaming choppy. Retest after reducing competing traffic, changing one condition at a time.
- Improve the two links that matter most. Where practical, connect the host PC to the router over Ethernet and use a strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for Android. Moonlight recommends this arrangement; it is a useful troubleshooting change when the network path is suspect.
- Check the network environment. Public or corporate Wi-Fi may block the required traffic, and firewall rules can stop local discovery or streaming. Test on a network you control and review host firewall settings if devices cannot discover or connect.
Optional: test packet loss and jitter with iPerf3
Sunshine documents an iPerf3 reverse UDP test for checking the network path and advises watching packet loss and jitter. Its version 2026.214.30634 troubleshooting guide describes less than 5% packet loss and below 1 ms jitter as ideal guidance. These are Sunshine’s troubleshooting targets, not guarantees that every game, client, or Wi-Fi setup will perform well at those readings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate network delay from rendering and video delay
A responsive stream depends on more than the Wi-Fi connection. Game rendering, PC encoding, network transport, Android decoding, display behavior, and controller handling can all contribute. Moonlight’s latency explanation includes the input’s trip to the host and the return trip for the resulting audio and video when describing measured network latency.

- Use any latency or performance overlay and client logs available in your streaming setup to see which stage appears slow.
- As a diagnostic, reduce stream load and compare whether responsiveness or stutter changes.
- Compare results using the same game and network conditions, changing one setting or connection at a time.
A poor response time is not, by itself, proof that Wi-Fi is the cause: video processing, game rendering, display delay, or controller behavior may also be involved. The available guidance does not establish a universal performance winner between Steam Link and Moonlight, so choose troubleshooting steps based on the measured symptom rather than switching clients on assumption alone.
