A different keyboard alone will not fix shaping. In many versions, the key controls are under Preferences > Type and the Paragraph panel.
Why Hindi half characters break apart
In Unicode Devanagari, a half form is usually not a separate character you type. A consonant cluster is encoded as a sequence of consonants and a virama; the font and text-rendering engine determine how that sequence appears. Unicode describes the rendering engine’s role this way: “The work then falls to the rendering engine to display the characters in their proper order and shape.”

For example, the sequence U+0924 DEVANAGARI LETTER TA + U+094D DEVANAGARI SIGN VIRAMA + U+0928 DEVANAGARI LETTER NA may appear as a ligature or as a half-ta form followed by na, depending on the font and rendering engine. The Unicode Standard also illustrates क् + ष forming क्ष. If a full conjunct glyph is unavailable, fallback rendering may use half forms or an explicit virama.
That is why typing the same text with another keyboard often changes nothing: input, underlying encoding, font coverage and shaping are different layers. Illustrator’s Middle Eastern and South Asian Composer is intended to provide the shaping support needed for scripts such as Devanagari.

Use this troubleshooting order
- Identify the text encoding. Confirm whether the text is actual Unicode Devanagari or text entered using a legacy font-specific encoding, such as Kruti Dev or Shree Lipi. Legacy-encoded text can depend on its original font mapping; changing fonts will not convert it into Unicode or reliably repair it. In an Adobe Community case, an Adobe employee identified the example text as Unicode, while a participant separately explained how legacy encoding differs.
- Choose a Devanagari-capable font. Test with a font that supports Devanagari shaping, not merely isolated characters. Unicode’s FAQ identifies downloadable Noto fonts as covering Indic scripts and names Microsoft’s Mangal as a Devanagari font. Which fonts are installed and how well they render can vary by system and font version.
- Enable Indic options and choose a composer. Adobe’s help documents the Indic options and Middle Eastern & South Asian composers. The exact controls vary by Illustrator version and platform; use the equivalent labels available in your installation.
- Set the text language. In the Character panel, choose Hindi from the language dropdown when available. This was part of the accepted solution in an Adobe Community discussion about broken combined consonants.
- Check Windows language resources if you use Windows. Adobe says the appropriate language and font packs must be installed for the language you want to use.
- Compare a short sample. Test a phrase containing a known conjunct and matra in the affected Illustrator document, then compare it with the same Unicode text in another Unicode-aware application. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a guaranteed test: if basic letters work but conjuncts break, focus on composer and font support; if changing fonts turns the text into unrelated Latin characters, investigate legacy encoding.
Enable the South Asian text controls
Show Indic options
In Adobe’s documented path, open Edit > Preferences > Type and enable Show Indic Options. On macOS, Preferences is under the Illustrator application menu rather than Edit. Menu names and availability can differ across releases, so look for the equivalent Type preference if your version presents a different path.
Select the composer
Select the affected text, open the Paragraph panel, and choose a Middle Eastern & South Asian composer. Adobe documents both Single-line Composer and Every-line Composer. In the Adobe Community case with broken combined consonants, the accepted fix used Indic Languages, the Middle Eastern & South Asian Every-line Composer, and Hindi in the Character language dropdown.

Adobe’s help says: “The additional Middle Eastern and South Asian Composer provides correct word shaping for many non-Western scripts.” If the text still breaks, confirm the actual text language and font as well as the composer; changing only one setting may not address the underlying issue.

When the problem is legacy text, not shaping
Unicode and legacy font-specific text may look similar on screen but behave differently when you change fonts or move the text between applications. If the text was created for a legacy font, first determine whether it has been converted to Unicode. Merely applying a Devanagari Unicode font does not perform that conversion. The Adobe Community discussion notes both Unicode text and legacy-encoded text as distinct cases, so treat legacy encoding as one possible cause rather than assuming it explains every broken conjunct.

Do not add invisible joiners as a general fix
A zero-width joiner (ZWJ) after a virama can request a half-form sequence in certain contexts; a zero-width non-joiner (ZWNJ) can request an overt virama or full-letter behavior. These characters affect shaping, so insert them only when the intended orthography or layout calls for them—not indiscriminately to compensate for an incorrectly configured composer or unsupported font.
Likewise, avoid repairing every glyph manually as the default approach. Shaping depends on character sequences and font/display-engine behavior, so a glyph substitution that looks right in one context may fail in another. Use Illustrator’s Glyphs panel for a deliberate design choice only after verifying the underlying text.

What to know about newer Illustrator behavior
An Adobe employee said on July 7, 2026 that composing text in any language or script without UI changes was available in beta and was “coming to the main app soon.” That statement does not establish that the feature is generally available in the main Illustrator app. For now, use the controls present in your installed version rather than assuming the beta behavior has shipped to everyone.
