Fix “Bootrec Is Not Recognized” by Opening the Windows Recovery Command Prompt

Bootrec may not be recognized in a normal Windows Command Prompt. The reported fix is to open Command Prompt in WinRE and use only the command suited to the startup issue.

If bootrec returns “bootrec.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file,” you may be running it in a normal Windows Command Prompt. A Microsoft-hosted community answer says to run it from the Command Prompt in Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) instead. Opening Command Prompt as an administrator in your regular Windows session is not the same as entering WinRE.

Why the command is not recognized

The accepted response on a Microsoft-hosted community Q&A page attributes this error to running the command while logged in to Windows. It recommends booting into WinRE before using Bootrec. The page was posted on October 18, 2021, and the response is community guidance—not an official Microsoft product article—so treat it as a reported troubleshooting route rather than a guarantee for every Windows version or device.

In practical terms, the first distinction to check is where the Command Prompt is running: inside your usual Windows session, or in the recovery environment. Elevating a normal Windows Command Prompt does not change it into WinRE.

Open Command Prompt in WinRE

  1. In Windows, hold Shift while selecting Restart.
  2. On the recovery screen, choose Troubleshoot.
  3. Choose Advanced options, then Command Prompt.
  4. At the recovery Command Prompt, enter the Bootrec command relevant to the startup problem you are diagnosing.

This is the path described in the community answer. Menu names or navigation can vary by Windows version or device; that specific variation is not established by the source.

Choose a command for the problem

The accepted answer lists these commands as examples:

  • bootrec /fixmbr
  • bootrec /fixboot
  • bootrec /scanos
  • bootrec /rebuildbcd

They are not a universal sequence to run for every boot failure. The Q&A lists them but does not provide a diagnosis that determines which one applies to a particular PC. If you are unsure which command fits, avoid running all four simply because they appear together in the answer.

If you cannot reach WinRE

The cited answer does not establish a fallback procedure for a PC that cannot reach WinRE, and it does not verify current, version-specific official instructions for that situation. Consult Windows recovery guidance for your exact Windows version and device rather than improvising a repair sequence. The answer’s Shift-plus-Restart route does not require a USB drive.

What the source does—and does not—establish

The Microsoft Q&A page is hosted by Microsoft, but its accepted answer is from an anonymous community contributor. It supports checking the command environment and trying WinRE Command Prompt; it does not establish that Bootrec was removed, document its availability across Windows configurations, or prove that a particular command will repair your startup problem. The page’s “80+ people found this answer helpful” indicator is engagement data, not a success rate or diagnostic statistic.
