Better drone footage depends on more than resolution: choose a camera for the shots you need, then control exposure, fly smoothly, compose deliberately, and check that the flight is permitted. The available evidence supports practical filming advice, but not a defensible ranking of current drone models. Use the buying criteria below to shortlist cameras, and verify current specifications and compatibility before choosing one.
What makes drone footage look good?
Aerial video combines three skills: flying, exposure, and framing. DJI’s drone videography guide recommends locking exposure, moving more slowly than feels natural, and building each clip around one planned move. A slow reveal, steady tracking pass, or gradual rise is easier to use in an edit than a clip that combines several unrelated maneuvers.

- Plan the move: Decide where the clip begins and ends before takeoff, and choose one movement to emphasize.
- Fly deliberately: Smooth, controlled inputs usually produce more usable footage than abrupt changes in direction or speed.
- Frame the subject: Leave space for the landscape or background when it helps explain the scene; avoid letting the drone’s movement distract from the subject.
- Match the shot to the edit: Choose frame rate and orientation with the final delivery in mind, including whether the video will need slow motion or a vertical crop.
How should you choose a camera drone for video?
No current model-by-model comparison is established here, so there is no supported “best drone” winner. Instead, compare official specifications against the way you intend to film. Resolution alone is not enough: DJI’s guide also identifies sensor size, bitrate, and color depth as relevant to image quality.

| Delivery and filming needs | High-resolution delivery, slow motion, social vertical framing, and extensive color grading can call for different recording options. | Confirm the camera supports the resolution, frame rate, orientation, and color profile you plan to use. |

DJI’s guide describes the Lito X1 as recording 4K/60 fps HDR, 14 stops of dynamic range, and 10-bit D-Log M. Those are vendor-reported specifications, not independent comparative test results, and they do not establish that it is the right or best choice for a particular buyer.

What settings should you use for drone video?
Start with a frame rate suited to the finished video, then select shutter speed in relation to it. DJI gives a shutter speed of about twice the frame rate as a conventional starting point, not a mandatory rule. Its examples are:
| Recording frame rate | Example shutter speed | Use described by DJI |
|---|---|---|
| 25 fps | 1/50 s | Standard-speed footage on a 25 fps timeline |
| 30 fps | 1/60 s | Standard-speed footage |
| 50 fps | 1/100 s | 2× slow motion on a 25 fps timeline |
| 100 fps | 1/200 s | 4× slow motion on a 25 fps timeline |
For Australia-oriented filming, DJI suggests 4K at 25 fps, a 1/50 s shutter, base ISO, and locked white balance as a starting point. It connects 25/50 fps choices to Australia’s 50 Hz power and artificial lighting. For U.S. or global delivery specifications, the guide suggests considering 24 or 30 fps instead. Treat these as regional starting points: adapt them to the delivery requirements, lighting, and options available on your aircraft.

- Exposure: Lock exposure when you want brightness to remain consistent through a clip rather than shift automatically as the view changes.
- ISO: Base ISO is DJI’s recommended starting point; raise it only as conditions and the camera’s image quality require.
- White balance: Set and lock it when consistent color across a clip matters.
- Color profile: Use a flat profile such as D-Log M if you plan to color-grade. DJI cautions that ungraded D-Log M can look worse than well-exposed standard-profile footage.
DJI also notes that 10-bit color records more tonal steps than 8-bit. More recording flexibility does not replace sound exposure or a grading workflow; choose a flat profile only if you are prepared to process the footage.
Do you need ND filters for drone footage?
Not always. An ND filter reduces the light reaching the sensor, which can help preserve a slower shutter in bright conditions when you are following a frame-rate-and-shutter convention. DJI offers these as starting examples: ND8 for overcast conditions or late afternoon, ND16 in bright sun, and ND32 or stronger around midday over sand, water, or snow. They are not fixed prescriptions: actual light, camera settings, and the drone’s filter compatibility determine what works. Confirm that a filter set is designed for your exact model before buying.

Where can you legally fly a drone to film?
Rules depend on the country, location, and purpose of the flight. The following is U.S.-specific guidance; it is not a substitute for checking current rules where you plan to fly.
Choose the right U.S. operating path
The FAA distinguishes recreational flying from operations under Part 107. Recreational flying must be for hobby purposes and follow the applicable safety requirements; non-recreational operations can require a remote pilot certificate and Part 107 compliance. The FAA’s Part 107 overview covers small UAS operations under 55 pounds and says the person operating the controls must hold a remote pilot certificate or be directly supervised by a certificate holder. It also identifies visual-line-of-sight requirements and limits on flying over people.

The FAA’s recreational flyer FAQ describes the recreational and Part 107 paths separately. Recreational flyers must fly for hobby purposes, follow community-based safety guidance, keep the aircraft within visual line of sight, give way to manned aircraft, and obtain authorization for controlled airspace. Under the FAA’s general drone guidance, recreational flyers also need TRUST, should keep the drone in sight, avoid other aircraft, and fly below 400 feet under the stated guidance.
Check airspace, registration, and Remote ID
Before each flight, check restrictions for the specific location. The FAA’s Where Can I Fly? page identifies B4UFLY as a way for recreational flyers to see where they can and cannot fly. An area that looks suitable for filming may still have airspace restrictions.

In the United States, the FAA’s Remote ID guidance says drones that must be registered, or are already registered, must comply with Remote ID. The FAA describes Standard Remote ID drones, broadcast modules, and FAA-Recognized Identification Areas (FRIAs); each compliance path has operating conditions. Check the requirements for the particular aircraft and operation rather than assuming a small drone is exempt.
The FAA’s registration guidance describes a recreational exception for drones at or below 0.55 pounds (250 grams). That threshold applies to the recreational exception as described by the FAA; it does not by itself settle registration or Remote ID obligations for every aircraft or type of operation.
Quick Recap
Before you buy or take off
- Match the drone’s documented recording options to your delivery format and filming plans.
- Check filter and storage-media compatibility in the specific model’s manual.
- For a U.S. flight, identify whether it is recreational or falls under Part 107, then check registration, Remote ID, and airspace requirements that apply.
- Plan one simple camera move, set frame rate and exposure deliberately, and confirm the location is permitted before launching.
