If your Bing lock screen wallpaper doesn’t change after a day (or it keeps showing the same image), it’s usually not a “Bing problem” by itself. It’s typically a Windows lock screen configuration issue, a stalled Spotlight/Bing content pipeline, or a policy/network restriction.
This guide walks through the fixes in a practical order: verify settings first, trigger a refresh, then reset Spotlight and related caches, and finally use advanced troubleshooting when refresh still won’t resume.

What Bing lock screen wallpapers are (and how refresh works)
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Bing images on the lock screen are delivered via the Windows Spotlight/lock screen content mechanism. Your device periodically checks for new content and updates the lock screen background when it can reach Microsoft’s services and when Windows is allowed to update.

Quick checks that fix most cases
- Restart once. A full restart often re-initializes background tasks that feed lock screen content.
- Confirm you’re on an active network. Try switching Wi‑Fi off/on or toggling Airplane Mode for 10 seconds.
- Turn off VPN/proxy temporarily. These can block the lock screen content checks.
- Make sure you didn’t “pin” a specific wallpaper. If you’ve selected a solid image instead of Spotlight/Bing, Windows won’t rotate.
If none of these changes anything, move on to the settings verification steps.
Verify the correct settings in Windows
Refresh won’t happen if your lock screen is set to a fixed picture or if Spotlight is disabled.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Lock screen.
- Find the Personalize your lock screen area.
- Set Background to Spotlight.
- Optionally set it back to Spotlight if you changed it recently.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Personalization > Lock screen.
- Under Background, pick Windows Spotlight.
- Under Choose your picture, ensure you’re not actively using a static image instead of Spotlight.
If you’re already set to Spotlight, it can still fail due to stale cache or stalled background tasks—which is where the reset steps help most.
Trigger a refresh manually
Before resetting anything, try nudging Spotlight/Bing to fetch a new image.
On the lock screen
- Lock your PC: press Win + L.
- Wait on the lock screen for 30–60 seconds.
- When the lock screen shows the current image, avoid clicking around immediately—give Windows time to refresh its content check.
Use “Like/Dislike” signals (it can restart personalization)
When the lock screen displays a Bing/Spotlight image, you may see options to like or dislike it. Changing your feedback can cause Windows to re-query content. If your UI shows a feedback button, choose one option and then wait a minute.
Repair Windows Spotlight and Bing wallpaper delivery
When Spotlight content stops updating, the most reliable approach is resetting Spotlight state and clearing cached assets. These steps tend to fix the “stuck on the same lock screen image” problem.
Reset Spotlight settings
This can force Windows to re-enable Spotlight content fetching.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen.

- Switch Background back to Spotlight.

Clear stale Spotlight/Bing caches
Cached Spotlight assets can get stuck in a bad state. Clearing them forces Windows to rebuild the cache.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 (steps):
- Press Win + R, type
%LocalAppData%, and press Enter. - Open the folder:
Packages. - Find folders related to Spotlight. Common ones include
Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy. - For safety, delete only the cache-like files inside those folders if you can identify them. If you can’t, consider using the re-registration method below instead (it’s often cleaner).
Because cache contents vary by build, the re-registration step tends to be more predictable than guessing what to delete. If you’re comfortable, you can also use the Microsoft content delivery manager reset via PowerShell (next section).
Re-register Spotlight packages
This is a common “reset engine” approach. It reinstalls the content delivery app registrations that Spotlight depends on.

After running, restart Windows. Then lock your PC and wait 5–10 minutes to see if new images arrive.
If PowerShell returns errors about missing packages, it usually means Spotlight isn’t installed in that particular configuration—use the settings verification and service/policy checks instead.
Check system and account prerequisites
Spotlight/Bing refresh depends on background activity and account state. If either is blocked, you can get stuck forever on one wallpaper.
Signed in with the right Microsoft account
Lock screen personalization is typically tied to your signed-in profile. Confirm you’re signed in with a normal Microsoft account (not a restricted/temporary profile) on the affected Windows installation.

- Go to Accounts > Your info.
- Confirm the account is the one you expect to receive lock screen content.
Location, language, and region
Some lock screen content selection is region-aware. If you’ve recently changed region or language, or if Location is off, the content feed can be inconsistent.

- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Location and ensure Location services are allowed (at least for Windows settings).
- Check Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
You don’t need exact coordinates, but an abrupt region change can cause Spotlight to re-learn the feed.
Metered connection and proxy/VPN
Metered connections can pause or slow background content downloads. Proxy and VPN can block the endpoints Spotlight uses.
- Open Settings > Network & internet.
- Select your active Wi‑Fi/Ethernet.
- Turn off Metered connection if it’s enabled.
- Disable VPN/proxy temporarily and retest after a restart.
Sleep, Modern Standby, and wake behavior
If your PC goes to sleep quickly, background updates may not run long enough to fetch new wallpapers. Modern Standby devices especially need periodic connectivity to update lock screen content.
- Plug in power (for laptops).
- Give the device 30–60 minutes of idle time on Wi‑Fi after a restart.
- Try waking the PC (not a full shutdown) and leave the lock screen up for 1–2 minutes.
Advanced troubleshooting (when it still won’t refresh)
If Spotlight is enabled and caches are reset but Bing still won’t rotate, treat it like a system/service/policy issue.
Confirm the service that feeds lock screen content is reachable
Content delivery relies on services that can be disabled by tweaks, optimization tools, or enterprise baselines.
- Press Win + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Locate services related to content delivery and updates (names vary by build), such as:
- For each relevant service you find, check Status and Startup type.
- If you previously disabled services, restore them to defaults and restart.
If you’re in a corporate environment, you may not be allowed to change service states—use the policy checks below.
Check Windows updates and known breakages
Spotlight behavior can regress after OS updates. If the wallpaper stopped refreshing right after an update, verify you’re fully patched.

Also verify your Windows version/build didn’t change to an edition where Spotlight/Bing lock screen features are restricted.

Use Group Policy / Registry if managed
On managed PCs, Group Policy can disable Spotlight, content delivery, or lock screen personalization. Look for policy settings under:
- Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Cloud Content / lock screen related policies.
If your PC is company-managed, ask your admin before changing anything. In many environments, the device will revert policy changes within minutes.
For personal devices, registry edits can help—but make sure you back up first. Common policy keys that influence Spotlight content delivery vary by version, so stick to the Settings + reset methods unless you have a specific known key from your environment.

Repair system files (SFC/DISM)
If Windows components are corrupted, Spotlight can silently fail. Run repairs to rule out OS damage.

Switch to Windows Spotlight or remove the lock screen app override
Depending on how your PC is configured, Spotlight and Bing may be layered behind another lock screen option. Try switching between available lock screen background types (for example, Spotlight vs Picture vs Slideshow) and then return to Spotlight.
After each change, lock the PC and wait 2–5 minutes. This validates whether the content pipeline is responsive again.

Use a curated wallpaper rotation (manual or automatic)
If the core refresh feature is unreliable for your setup, use an image rotation method you control. Options include:
- Set Windows to slideshow with a trusted folder of images.
- Use a wallpaper app that periodically downloads images (ensure it respects your privacy and network).
You’ll trade “automatic Bing curation” for predictable rotation, but it eliminates the dependence on Spotlight’s delivery checks.

- Leaving Background on a fixed Picture. Spotlight has to be selected for Bing rotation.
