Fix Audio and Video Sync Issues with MediaPackage in a YouTube Live Stream

Find where audio and picture first diverge in a MediaPackage-to-YouTube workflow, distinguish sync offset from latency, and check timestamp and ingest settings safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To fix audio and video sync in a MediaPackage-to-YouTube workflow, first establish whether sound is actually ahead of or behind the picture—or whether the whole stream is simply arriving late. Then compare audio and picture at each available stage, from the encoder through MediaPackage and the YouTube ingest path to playback. MediaPackage is an origin and packaging stage, not inherently a direct YouTube publisher; the exact path depends on the components between them.

First distinguish sync offset from live latency

A sync problem means sound and picture do not line up with each other. Note whether audio is consistently ahead, consistently behind, or gradually drifts out of sync. Latency is different: both tracks may be delayed relative to the live event while remaining aligned.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

HLS delivery delay can come from encoding and decoding, network conditions, and player buffers. AWS’s 2024 guidance gives typical regular HLS latency of 12–30 seconds depending on workflow configuration and player capabilities, and 5–10 seconds for a Low-Latency HLS end-to-end workflow. These are latency ranges, not sync tolerances or guarantees for an individual stream. AWS’s HLS latency discussion explains the distinction in delivery terms.

Map the actual signal path

Write down each hop rather than assuming MediaPackage sends directly to YouTube. AWS documents MediaPackage receiving an upstream HLS stream and packaging it for downstream playback requests. YouTube documents separate encoder-ingest paths, including RTMP/RTMPS and HLS. Depending on the architecture, another encoder, relay, or workflow component may be needed to submit the stream to YouTube.

  1. Source and capture: identify cameras, microphones, capture devices, and any production mixer.
  2. Upstream encoder or transcoder: record its input mappings, clock and timestamp settings, and output protocol.
  3. MediaPackage: note whether the workflow uses v1 or v2, the input and endpoint configuration, and—on v2—the output timestamp mode and channel output-locking mode.
  4. YouTube submission: identify the component that actually sends the stream to YouTube and whether it uses RTMP/RTMPS or HLS.
  5. Monitoring and playback: compare YouTube’s stream preview or health information with the playback device and player where the issue was reported.

AWS describes the upstream relationship directly: “An upstream encoder (such as AWS Elemental MediaLive) sends an HLS live stream using AWS Signature Version 4 to authorize request to your origin and your IAM channel policy.” See the MediaPackage v2 live processing flow and MediaPackage v1 live workflow.

Locate where sync first breaks

Use the same brief test at each stage you can record or monitor. Include movement and a sharp, visible-and-audible transient, such as a hand clap. Compare recordings or measurements from successive points in the chain. This is a practical isolation method, not a vendor-prescribed MediaPackage test.

  1. Check the source or encoder output. If it is already out of sync, inspect capture timing, audio/video input mapping, encoder configuration, clocks, and timestamps before changing MediaPackage.
  2. Compare MediaPackage input and output. If the upstream input is aligned but the packaged output is not, inspect the endpoint and track configuration, then check the v2 timestamp mode and its constraints.
  3. Check the YouTube submission path. If packaged output is aligned but the YouTube preview is not, examine the relay or encoder that submits to YouTube and its input mapping and timestamps.
  4. Compare preview with viewer playback. If the preview is aligned but a viewer’s playback is not, check the player and playback device before changing upstream timestamps.

Change one stage at a time and repeat the comparison. Altering multiple components together makes it difficult to identify which change affected the result.

Check MediaPackage v2 timestamp behavior carefully

MediaPackage v2 offers two output timestamp modes: PASSTHROUGH preserves input presentation timestamps (PTS), while REBASED_TO_CHANNEL_START rebases output PTS relative to the channel start. The mode defaults to passthrough when omitted. AWS specifies that it is configurable only when output locking is NON_EPOCH_LOCKED, and that the setting cannot be changed after endpoint creation. Consult the CreateOriginEndpoint API reference for the applicable fields and constraints.

  • 【What You Get】Includes: HDMI Capture Card, USB 3.0 to USB-C Adapter, User Manual. Tips: Make sure your tablet’s OTG function is enabled before connecting. Test your HDMI device with a monitor first to confirm video and audio output, then connect to the Video Capture Card for recording.

Do not switch timestamp modes as a generic sync fix. First establish the current mode, locking configuration, and point where the offset appears. Because the setting is immutable after endpoint creation, changing it may require a new endpoint and corresponding workflow changes; verify the impact against your deployment before proceeding.

Account for multi-encoder and failover workflows

When a workflow uses multiple encoders, regional paths, or failover, aligned timestamps and pictures matter in addition to the behavior of one encoder. AWS recommends locking video frames as early as possible. Its guidance discusses embedded timecode or local LTC for synchronizing encoder outputs in cross-region workflows; that does not mean every single-encoder sync issue requires LTC hardware. See AWS encoder synchronization guidance.

Validate YouTube ingest and stream health

Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the protocol and encoding settings in your workflow. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Run a test containing both audio and moving video, then monitor stream health and messages during the event. Check the YouTube live encoder settings page for current requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the YouTube ingest path uses HLS, verify its protocol details rather than treating it as interchangeable with continuous RTMP ingest. YouTube’s HLS documentation specifies TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. YouTube also says HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP ingest. A protocol change may alter event-to-screen delay; that alone does not establish or correct an audio-to-picture offset. See YouTube HLS ingest requirements.
