Android may delay or limit an app’s background work after the screen turns off to save battery—but a lock screen alone does not prove that Doze is responsible. The cause depends on what stops (notifications, audio, location, or an upload), how long the phone has been idle, and the app’s and Android’s settings.
First identify what “stops working” means
Different symptoms point to different causes. A delayed network update is not the same as audio pausing, location tracking ending, an upload being interrupted, or the app closing. Note exactly what happens and when: immediately after locking, after a longer idle period, or only when the phone is unplugged and still.

- Notifications or new data arrive late: Android may defer network access or batch background work while the device is idle.
- Audio or location tracking stops: The app may need an appropriate ongoing-work design or permission, or the manufacturer’s battery controls may be restricting it.
- An upload stops or the app closes: Background-service limits, app-specific behavior, or a network interruption may be involved.
For a useful diagnosis, note the phone model, Android version, app name and version, whether the problem occurs on battery or while charging, and how long the screen has been off. Android’s platform rules vary by release, app target version, task, and device implementation.

Doze: device idle after screen-off
Doze is not simply another name for a locked screen. Android documents it as an idle mode associated with a device being unplugged, stationary, and screen-off for a period. It can defer network access and other battery-intensive work. So if an app’s network activity slows after the phone has been idle, Doze is one possible explanation—not a diagnosis for every interruption. Android’s Doze and App Standby guidance covers this behavior on Android 6.0 and later.

App Standby and standby buckets
Android may defer network activity for apps the user has not actively used, and it can batch or delay background tasks. Standby buckets apply different restrictions according to app usage and other conditions. The restricted bucket has the highest restrictions; on Android 13 and later, documented inactivity criteria include eight days without user interaction, subject to exemptions and other conditions. That long-term app-usage rule is distinct from Doze’s device-idle conditions. Android’s App Standby Buckets documentation explains the categories.
Background-service limits
Android’s background-service rules can stop a service after an app has been in the background beyond its transition window. The details depend partly on Android release and the app’s target SDK. A foreground service is intended for work the user expects to continue immediately or without interruption; it is not a general way to keep any app alive. App and manufacturer battery controls
Android and phone makers may provide per-app battery or background-use controls. Labels and behavior vary, so there is no single settings path guaranteed on every handset. A restriction in these controls can contribute to delayed or interrupted work, but the available evidence does not establish one manufacturer-specific cause for an unspecified phone.

What to try on your phone
- Check the app’s battery controls. Open Android Settings and look for the app’s battery, battery usage, or background-use settings. The exact path and labels vary by Android release and manufacturer; use Settings search for the app name or “battery” if needed.
- Review the restriction shown for that app. If Android offers an unrestricted or less-restricted option and the app genuinely needs background activity, you can try it and observe whether the symptom changes.
- Test under different conditions. Compare behavior shortly after screen-off with behavior after the phone has been idle, and compare unplugged operation with charging. This can help distinguish an idle-related delay from an app-specific or network problem.
- Record the details if it continues. Note the precise symptom, Android and app versions, phone model, and whether the issue occurs only on battery. Those details are more useful to the app’s support team or phone maker than saying only that the app stops when locked.
Allowing unrestricted background use is not a general performance fix: it may increase battery consumption, and it does not remove every Android restriction. Android also limits which apps should request direct battery-optimization exemptions. Android’s power-management guidance describes the relevant limits.

What app developers should do
Schedule work instead of keeping a service running
For background work that can wait until system conditions are suitable, Android describes JobScheduler as a common alternative to background services. Apps should account for idle modes and platform scheduling rather than assume that a process or service will run continuously when the screen is off. See Android’s background-execution guidance.
Use push messaging for backend updates
For backend messaging, Android recommends Firebase Cloud Messaging instead of a separate persistent network connection when possible. High-priority messages are for time-sensitive, user-visible notifications. Normal-priority messages may be delivered during a Doze maintenance window or after the device wakes. Reserve foreground services for user-expected continuous work
A foreground service is appropriate when the work needs to continue immediately or without interruption and the user expects it—for example, an ongoing activity the app clearly presents. Android’s guidance is explicit: “Don’t start a foreground service just to prevent the system from determining that your app is idle.”
Account for Android 15 data-sync limits
On Android 15 and later, the documented limit for an app’s dataSync foreground services is six hours total in a 24-hour period, with timeout callbacks and related start restrictions. This rule applies to that service type and context; it is not a universal runtime allowance for all background work or an explanation for every app that pauses after locking. When the cause is still unclear
If changing the app’s battery setting does not help, the interruption may be app-specific or related to connectivity rather than a system idle mode. Compare whether other apps have the same symptom and whether the failure affects network updates, local playback, tracking, uploads, or the app process itself. Android’s general documentation cannot identify the cause on an individual handset without the phone model, Android version, app details, and a precise symptom.
