Those are different failures with different fixes. A frozen image alone does not prove the stream ended.
Identify what stops when OBS loses focus
When the problem happens, note the time and check OBS, YouTube Live Control Room, the source, and Windows before changing settings. Focus can mean that OBS is in the background, or that the separate app OBS is capturing has been backgrounded. Those situations are not interchangeable.

- In OBS: Does the status still say it is streaming? Does the preview freeze, or only the YouTube player? Note whether bitrate changes or dropped-frame counters increase.
- In YouTube Live Control Room: Is the broadcast still live? Does stream health show a problem, or has incoming data stopped?
- At the source: Is the affected item an OBS browser source, a separately captured browser or application window, a media source, or a static scene?
- In Windows: Does the issue begin when OBS loses focus, when the captured app is minimized or backgrounded, or when the computer locks or sleeps?
Use the pattern to choose the branch to investigate:

If OBS stays connected but a picture freezes
OBS browser source
An OBS GitHub issue describes one reporter’s browser sources stuttering after OBS loses focus. The reporter proposed Windows Efficiency Mode and process-priority behavior as possible causes; this is an individual report, not a confirmed general OBS bug or fix. Its system details identify Windows 11 and OBS 32.0.4, so do not assume the same behavior on another setup. Record your own OBS and Windows versions before testing changes. Read the OBS issue report.

A separate captured browser or application window
Check whether the source application continues to display and update its content when visible. Then test whether backgrounding or minimizing that app reliably coincides with the capture freezing. A Reddit post titled “Obs Capturing failing when i focus on other windows” describes this kind of symptom, but its discussion is anecdotal. Suggestions such as disabling hardware acceleration or changing process priority should be treated as individual troubleshooting ideas, not universal fixes. See the user discussion.
Keep window-management settings in perspective
OBS’s current English locale includes the options “Minimize to system tray when started” and “Always minimize to system tray instead of task bar.” They change how the OBS window is minimized; the documentation does not claim that they prevent source stutter, keep an encoder running through sleep, or fix network loss. Do not treat minimizing OBS to the tray as a proven focus-loss fix. Check the OBS English locale strings.

If OBS drops frames or disconnects
Investigate the connection rather than assuming focus caused the failure. OBS says dropped frames can result when the network connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Start with the connection path and the bitrate your connection can sustain consistently.
- Check stable upload capacity, not just a brief peak, and compare it with the configured bitrate.
- Test Wi-Fi stability; if possible, compare with a more stable wired connection.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, or bundled network-management tool is interfering.
- Use OBS’s network optimization or TCP pacing options only when relevant: OBS documents them for Windows and notes that some users have reported benefits for dropped-frame or disconnection cases. They are not a general fix for a frozen source.
- Dynamic bitrate may reduce quality during instability, but OBS cautions that it does not solve the underlying connection problem.
There is no single bitrate that fits every stream. The suitable value depends on stable upload capacity, YouTube’s current limits, codec, resolution, and frame rate. Follow OBS’s stream-connection troubleshooting guidance rather than copying an old forum setting.

Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds that should not exceed 4 seconds. Choose settings that match the selected codec and resolution, and consult YouTube’s current page for the relevant bitrate values rather than applying one number to every stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Check whether YouTube ended the broadcast
Sending data from OBS and having a broadcast marked live on YouTube are related but distinct states. OBS’s YouTube setup guide explains that broadcast selection, scheduled streams, and auto-start or auto-stop settings affect how a broadcast starts, ends, and handles reconnection.

In particular, the guide says that with auto-stop enabled, the broadcast ends after streaming stops, preventing a reconnect from continuing that same broadcast. With auto-stop unchecked, a broadcast can still eventually end after no stream data for multiple hours. Check the broadcast’s state and controls alongside OBS’s connection status; these settings help explain what happened after an interruption, but do not establish why losing focus triggered it. - Record the time of a failure and the OBS and Windows versions, source type, OBS streaming status, bitrate and dropped-frame indicators, and YouTube stream-health message.
- If practical, reproduce the focus change during a private or unlisted test. Include movement and audio similar to the real stream.
- Change one relevant variable at a time, such as whether the source app is minimized, so you can tell what changed the result.
- Save the OBS log and compare the timestamps with what Live Control Room reported.
- During a live event, monitor the Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators and messages. YouTube Help advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
YouTube recommends testing before going live with movement and audio similar to the actual stream. A fix is established for your setup only when a controlled before-and-after test shows the symptom no longer occurs. YouTube’s encoder guidance and stream-health advice.
