This guide focuses on Hyper-V: switch settings, the host network adapter, VLANs, and the guest’s adapter and IPv4 state are the main checks. The exact fix depends on your symptoms; these steps are diagnostic checks, not guaranteed repairs. If you use VirtualBox or VMware Workstation, follow that hypervisor’s network settings instead, since Hyper-V controls do not apply unchanged.
Start by separating an import problem from a network problem
Note what happens when you start the imported VM. If it will not start or is not available in Hyper-V Manager, troubleshoot the import and configuration compatibility before changing networking. If it starts but cannot obtain an IP address or communicate with the network, proceed to the adapter and switch checks.

1. Identify the hypervisor and guest operating system
These instructions use Hyper-V on a Windows 11 host. The guest operating system also matters: Windows and Linux have different ways to inspect and enable network interfaces. If you are using another hypervisor, find its virtual-switch and VM-adapter controls rather than applying the Hyper-V steps blindly.

2. Confirm that the import completed
In Hyper-V Manager, confirm the VM appears and can be selected. Hyper-V import offers register-in-place, restore, and copy options; they handle the VM files and identity differently. Review Microsoft’s Hyper-V import and export guidance if you are unsure which import type was used.

3. Check host and VM configuration compatibility
Hyper-V configuration versions affect which hosts can use an imported VM. A newer Hyper-V host can generally import an older VM configuration, but a VM created with a newer configuration may not be usable on an older host. Check the version compatibility in Microsoft’s import documentation before treating a startup or registration issue as a network fault.
Check that the VM is connected to a suitable switch
4. Inspect the virtual adapter attachment
- Open Hyper-V Manager, right-click the VM, and choose Settings.
- Select Network Adapter in the hardware list.
- Check the Virtual switch selection. Choose the switch intended for this VM, or select Not connected only if disconnection is intentional.
A virtual adapter can appear in the VM settings and still have no useful network path if it is not attached to the right switch. Microsoft explains the switch types in its Hyper-V virtual switch guidance.
| Switch or setup | Typical reach | Physical NIC binding | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| External | Connects VMs to an external network | Bound to a selected host network adapter | Creating or changing it may disrupt host connectivity. |
| Internal | Provides connectivity between the host and VMs on that switch | No external NIC binding is selected in the external-switch workflow | Use NAT with an internal switch if guest access through the host is the goal. |
| Private | Provides connectivity among VMs on that switch | No external NIC binding is selected in the external-switch workflow | It is not a direct external-network connection. |
| NAT over an internal switch | Lets a VM reach network resources through the host | Uses an internal switch | Microsoft’s Windows NAT guide documents a limit of one NAT network per host. |
These are different connectivity designs, not interchangeable repair settings. Choose according to whether the VM needs external-network access, host-to-VM communication, or VM-to-VM communication. See Microsoft’s switch overview and Windows NAT setup guide.

5. Verify the external switch uses the intended host adapter
If the VM should connect to the external network, open Hyper-V Manager > Virtual Switch Manager. Select the external switch and check that it is bound to the host network adapter that is active and connected to the intended network. Changing or creating an external switch can briefly interrupt the host’s network connection, so avoid doing it during work that depends on uninterrupted connectivity.
6. Check whether the host should share the adapter
In the external switch settings, inspect Allow management operating system to share this network adapter. The right setting depends on the network design. Check it when the Windows host is also expected to use the selected physical adapter; do not change it without considering how the host is meant to connect.
7. Review VLAN configuration
If the host network uses VLANs, compare the VLAN ID configured for the VM with the settings expected by the host and other network devices. In Hyper-V, inspect the VM’s network adapter settings for VLAN identification. A connected-looking adapter can still be isolated if its VLAN tagging does not match the network. Microsoft’s virtual switch guidance describes VLAN configuration and the need for consistent identifiers.

Check the guest’s adapter and IP settings
8. Confirm the guest sees an enabled adapter
Inside the guest OS, check whether its network interface is present and enabled. If it is disabled, enable it using the guest’s network controls. If it is missing, investigate the guest’s device or network-driver state rather than assuming that changing the host’s physical adapter will fix it.
9. Check IPv4 and address assignment
For a guest that should use IPv4, confirm IPv4 is enabled on its network interface and that the VM is configured for the intended address-assignment method. Microsoft lists disabled adapters, unchecked IPv4, driver problems, and switch setup among possible Hyper-V networking issues; the right branch depends on what the guest reports. See Microsoft’s Hyper-V network troubleshooting guidance.
- If the adapter is disconnected in Hyper-V, return to the switch attachment check.
- If the guest has no IP address, check its IPv4 and address-assignment settings, then revisit switch and VLAN configuration.
- If it has an address but cannot reach the expected network, confirm that the selected switch type provides the required reach and that the network permits that traffic.
Choose NAT only when it matches the connection you need
10. Set up NAT for guest access through the host
NAT is an option when the VM needs network access through the Windows host rather than a direct external-switch connection. Microsoft’s documented Windows approach uses an internal switch. Its guide also states that a host is limited to one NAT network, so check for an existing NAT setup before adding another. Follow the steps in the Windows Hyper-V NAT guide rather than layering an unverified second NAT configuration onto the host.

PowerShell option for creating a switch
Microsoft documents these commands for creating Hyper-V switches. Run PowerShell as an administrator and replace the example names with the actual adapter, switch, and switch-type values for your setup; the angle-bracket text is not ready to paste as-is.
New-VMSwitch -Name <switch-name> -NetAdapterName <netadapter-name>
The first form creates an external switch bound to a physical network adapter. For an internal or private switch, use the switch-type form instead:

Handle migration and MAC-related cases separately
VMware-to-Hyper-V migration with a startup failure
If the VM was migrated from VMware and Windows 11 will not start it in Hyper-V, treat that as a migration and boot-configuration issue, not a general network-adapter fix. Microsoft’s Windows 11 migration procedure includes checking Secure Boot and TPM and selecting the Microsoft UEFI Certificate Authority Secure Boot template. Follow the migration-specific steps in Microsoft’s VMware-to-Hyper-V migration guide; those settings are not evidence-based remedies for every network failure.
Linux guest MAC mismatch
A Linux Hyper-V guest showing a MAC mismatch is a separate case. Microsoft’s documentation for Azure describes such a mismatch as a potential cause of unavailable networking, but its recovery steps are Azure-specific and should not be treated as general instructions for a desktop Windows 11 host. See the Azure Linux VM MAC-address guidance if the VM is in that environment.
When these checks do not resolve the problem
Record whether the VM starts, whether Hyper-V shows its adapter attached to a switch, whether the guest detects an enabled interface, and whether it receives an IP address. Those details distinguish an import or startup issue from a switch, VLAN, or guest configuration issue. Avoid changing the MAC address, replacing host hardware, or editing the registry as a default response: the cited guidance does not establish those steps as general fixes for an imported VM with an unspecified symptom.
