Defragmenting can help a fragmented traditional hard disk drive (HDD) access files more efficiently, but it is not a guaranteed way to make a slow computer faster. Windows 10 and Windows 11 generally optimize drives automatically: they defragment HDDs and use trim for solid-state drives (SSDs). Check your drive type and consider other causes of the slowdown before expecting a noticeable change.
Will defragging improve performance?
It can help when an HDD is fragmented, because defragmentation rearranges files so the drive can read them more easily. Microsoft describes optimizing a hard drive as one possible way to improve PC performance, but it does not publish a universal speed gain or a benchmark showing how much faster a computer will become. Results depend on the computer and the cause of its slowdown.

Windows normally handles drive optimization for you. Microsoft says, “For the most part, Windows automatically optimizes your data drives to maintain performance.” The default schedule is weekly, and you can check or change it in the built-in drive optimization interface. What happens on an HDD versus an SSD?
| Drive type | Windows optimization | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional HDD | Defragments files to help make them easier to read. | Use Analyze to check whether the drive needs optimization; use Optimize to run it if appropriate. |
| SSD | Uses trim, which tells the drive where it can safely do cleanup work when higher-priority activity is not taking place. | Let Windows manage optimization. Do not treat SSD trim as conventional HDD defragmentation. |
To confirm the drive type, open Settings > System > Storage and review the drive details under the storage management options. The exact presentation can vary by Windows version. See Microsoft Support: Storage settings in Windows.

How to check or optimize a drive in Windows
- Search the taskbar for Defragment and Optimize Drives and open the result.
- Select the drive you want to check. For an HDD, choose Analyze to see whether Windows indicates that optimization is needed.
- If the HDD needs optimization, select Optimize. For an SSD, Windows uses trim as its optimization operation.
- To change or disable automatic optimization, use Change settings in the same interface. Windows’ default schedule is weekly.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 generally run drive optimization automatically, so manual optimization is usually unnecessary unless you are checking a drive or adjusting the schedule. The same Microsoft guidance covers both versions: Defragment / optimize your data drives in Windows.
What else can make a computer feel slow?
Drive optimization is only one possible troubleshooting step. Microsoft also identifies limited storage, too many startup or background apps, outdated software, malware, resource-intensive processes, and older hardware as possible contributors to poor performance. If optimization does not address the cause, check these areas rather than repeatedly defragmenting a drive.

- Low free space: A nearly full drive can be associated with slower performance and problems installing updates. Windows includes Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup to remove unneeded files. See Microsoft Support: Free up drive space in Windows.
- Startup and background activity: Unneeded apps running when Windows starts or in the background can consume resources.
- Outdated software or malware: Check for available updates and use appropriate security checks.
- Hardware limits: Software adjustments may offer little improvement when an older PC no longer meets the demands of the tasks being run.
