Fix a Missing AMD Driver on Windows 10 for Free (AMD Auto-Detect and Manual Methods)

"AMD Scanner" usually means AMD's Auto-Detect and Install tool. Here's how to find a missing AMD driver on Windows 10 for free, and what to do when the tool doesn't apply.

There is no separate AMD product called “AMD Scanner.” People who search for it almost always mean AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool, which checks your PC and fetches a compatible driver. If it can’t find your driver, or the driver is missing in Device Manager, the free fix is to identify the exact AMD component, try AMD’s tool if your system is supported, and fall back to AMD’s manual product selector. Windows Update is a third route, but it comes with a caveat on Windows 10, covered below.

Which route fits your situation

Situation Best route
Windows 10 64-bit, version 1809 or later, with a Radeon graphics card or Ryzen chipset AMD Auto-Detect and Install
Auto-Detect doesn’t recognize your system or product, or the product is older AMD Drivers and Support, using the product selector
You only need a basic working driver and don’t know the exact model yet Windows Update, including optional driver updates

Step 1: Identify the AMD component that’s missing a driver

“AMD driver” could mean a Radeon GPU driver, a Ryzen chipset driver, or something else. Choosing correctly matters more than any tool.

  1. Right-click the Start button and choose Device Manager.
  2. Look for entries under Display adapters, System devices or Other devices. A device marked with a yellow warning icon, or listed as “Microsoft Basic Display Adapter” or “Unknown device,” is the likely culprit.
  3. Double-click the device to open its properties. Microsoft documents that Device Manager shows the device type, status, manufacturer, driver information and any error message. Note the model name and the status text.

Write down the exact graphics model (for example, the Radeon model name) or your Ryzen processor and motherboard chipset. You’ll need it for the manual route.

Step 2: Try AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool

AMD’s support article (last updated June 2, 2025) says the tool detects compatible AMD Radeon graphics, AMD Ryzen chipsets and your Windows version, then obtains matching driver packages. It lists Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later as supported.

  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
  1. Confirm you’re running 64-bit Windows 10 version 1809 or newer (Settings > System > About).
  2. Download the tool only from AMD’s official Drivers and Support page, not from a third-party mirror. Package versions and installer options change, so old copies may be outdated.
  3. Run the setup and let it check hardware compatibility and download the supporting drivers.
  4. Restart if prompted, then recheck Device Manager. The warning icon should be gone and the device should show AMD as the driver provider.

If the tool reports nothing to install or can’t see your hardware, that doesn’t necessarily mean a fault. AMD says it does not cover every product or system.

Step 3: Use AMD’s manual selector when Auto-Detect doesn’t apply

For unsupported systems and products, AMD directs you to its Drivers and Support page and the product selector.

  • Dual-ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as standard conventional sleeve bearings designs

  1. Open AMD Drivers and Support.
  2. Choose your product category and exact model, using the name you noted in Device Manager.
  3. Select Windows 10 (64-bit) as the operating system.
  4. Download the package AMD offers for that combination and run it.

If your model isn’t in the list, check whether it’s a different category, such as an integrated graphics processor listed under the processor family, or a chipset listed with the platform rather than as a graphics card. Don’t install a driver meant for a different model just because it installs without error.

Step 4: Check Windows Update

Microsoft says Windows uses Windows Update for recommended drivers and lets you pick optional driver updates manually. If Windows Update can’t find a compatible one, Microsoft’s guidance is to go to the hardware maker’s website, which here means AMD.

Where the option lives

For Windows 10 version 2004 and later, Microsoft’s driver-distribution documentation says the Update driver search in Device Manager is local only. When it finds nothing, open Windows Update (Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update) and look under optional updates for driver entries. Earlier Windows 10 versions behaved differently, so menu paths may not match on an old build.

The Windows 10 support caveat

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft states that after that date it no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10. In practice, don’t count on Windows Update to supply new drivers; AMD’s own site is the more dependable source.

What to avoid

  • Paid “driver scanner” apps. Nothing in AMD’s or Microsoft’s guidance says one is needed, and a generic scanner isn’t guaranteed to identify your AMD hardware correctly.
  • Unofficial download mirrors. Use AMD’s pages.
  • Assuming one installer fits all. Legacy AMD products may not be supported by the current automatic tool.

As Microsoft puts it, “A driver is software that allows a Windows device to communicate with hardware.” A correct driver depends on knowing exactly which hardware you have.
