Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a Minecraft server suddenly disappears and the console prints only Killed, the Linux kernel, a container, or a hosting-panel limit probably terminated it for exceeding its memory budget. A Java heap failure usually prints OutOfMemoryError instead. Check the host and server logs first, identify the real memory ceiling, then lower -Xms and -Xmx far enough below that ceiling to leave roughly 1,000–1,500 MB for Java’s non-heap memory, the operating system, and other services. Paper’s guidance and Minecraft Help’s published examples provide the starting points below.

What a plain “Killed” message means
The word Killed is not a Minecraft error diagnosis. It is usually the shell reporting that the Java process received a forceful termination signal. That can happen when the operating system’s out-of-memory killer acts, when a container reaches its cgroup memory limit, or when a hosting panel enforces the limit assigned to the server. On a shared machine, the limit can be lower than the advertised physical or VPS memory.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Java heap exhaustion looks different in most cases. The server normally remains alive long enough to print a Java exception such as java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space, a related JVM memory error, or a stack trace. The distinction is useful, but not absolute: a process can be killed before Java writes a diagnostic, and a panel can terminate it while the JVM is also under pressure.
| What you see | Most likely explanation | Where to confirm it |
|---|---|---|
Only Killed in the terminal |
Operating-system, container, or panel termination | Kernel, container, or panel event log |
OutOfMemoryError with a Java stack trace |
Java heap or another JVM allocation failed | Server log and JVM output |
| Panel reports an out-of-memory event | The configured container or panel ceiling was reached | Panel resource and event pages |
| Server starts, then dies during a heavy load | Peak world, plugin, mod, or concurrent-service usage exceeded available headroom | Server log together with host metrics at the failure time |
Do not assume that an OutOfMemoryError is the only meaningful result. A hard cgroup limit can send SIGKILL without giving Java an opportunity to produce an exception.

Understand the memory numbers before changing flags
-Xmx is only the Java heap ceiling
-Xmx limits the maximum Java heap. It does not describe the entire process or the amount of memory a host must provide. The JVM also needs native memory for its runtime, class metadata, thread stacks, direct buffers, garbage-collection structures, loaded libraries, and memory-mapped files. Plugins and server components can allocate outside the heap as well. The operating system and any co-hosted database, proxy, panel, backup job, or monitoring process need room too.
-Xms is the initial heap size. Setting it close to the hard limit can create pressure immediately, even if the server has not yet reached -Xmx. Treat the container or panel limit—not the marketing name of a plan—as the maximum budget you can actually use.

Paper’s Aikar’s flags documentation states: “Do not allocate all of your available memory on a shared host!” It recommends reducing both Xmx and Xms by about 1000–1500 MB to avoid running out of memory or having the OOM killer terminate the server. That is a reserve, not a promise that every workload will fit. A machine running other services may need more headroom.
Minecraft Help’s system-size examples
Minecraft Help gives a concrete example for small machines: if the system has 4 GB of RAM or less, decrease Minecraft’s allocation to 2 GB for stability. It says systems with 8 GB or more may increase the allocation. “May increase” is not a recommended heap number; the safe value still depends on the actual host limit, the operating system, and the server workload.
These statements are compatible when interpreted correctly. A 4 GB computer still needs memory outside the heap, so assigning the full 4 GB to Java is unsafe. On an 8 GB system, a larger heap can be possible, but only after reserving memory for everything else. On a hosting plan, use the enforced container value even if the physical machine has much more RAM.

Save the last server and launcher output
Before restarting, copy the final lines from the server log and the terminal or service manager. For a typical installation, inspect the latest log under the server’s
logsdirectory, for example withtail -n 100 logs/latest.log. Look forOutOfMemoryError, a JVM fatal message, or an abrupt end with no Java exception.Recommended: Fix Windows Errors and Clear Junk Files in Minutes - Free Scan →Recommended: Crashes or Glitches? Check the host or kernel log
On Linux, review the current boot’s kernel messages with
journalctl -k -b. On systems where it is available, dmesg -Tcan show messages containing terms such asout of memory, oom, orkilled process. A command such asjournalctl -k -b | grep -i -E 'out of memory|oom|killed process'narrows the output. Permission restrictions may require an administrator to run these commands. An entry naming the Java process, a cgroup, or a memory limit is strong evidence that the operating system or a container—not Minecraft’s own exception handler—ended the process. If you cannot access kernel logs on managed hosting, use the provider’s event and resource pages instead.

Measure the real ceiling
On a standalone Linux host,
free -hshows total and available system memory, but it does not replace checking a container limit. In Docker or another container runtime, inspect the container’s memory setting; for Docker, an administrator can usedocker inspect --format '{{.HostConfig.Memory}}' CONTAINER_NAME. A zero or empty result can mean no explicit Docker limit, while a hosting panel may still impose one. Panel dashboards generally expose the enforced limit under memory, resources, limits, or plan details.Record all of these separately: physical RAM, the panel or cgroup hard limit, the current
-Xmx, and memory consumed by other services. Never calculate a heap from the advertised VPS total alone.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
Check whether several services share the budget
List databases, proxies, web panels, backups, map renderers, and scheduled jobs on the same host. Their usage can coincide with world saves or player peaks. A Minecraft process that survives at idle but is killed during a backup or a proxy restart may be competing for the same reserve rather than suffering from a permanently undersized heap.
Set a safer heap budget
Back up the launcher configuration
Copy the startup script, service unit, or panel startup command before editing it. A panel may overwrite a local script, and multiple copies of a startup command can leave an old -Xmx in effect. After editing, confirm the command that actually launches Java.

Lower both heap values
Change -Xms and -Xmx together so the initial heap and the ceiling fit the same budget. The exact values are workload-dependent, but the Paper recommendation is to leave approximately 1000–1500 MB below the available limit. If the host runs several services, leave more than that reserve.
For a 4 GB computer, Minecraft Help’s published stability example is a 2 GB Minecraft allocation. That does not authorize allocating the remaining 2 GB to another process without checking the operating system and co-hosted services. For a system or plan with 8 GB or more, increase allocation only after confirming the actual limit and observing memory use; no universal heap number follows from the physical total alone.
Use clear units and verify the effective command
Java accepts sizes such as 2G and 2048M. Keep the units consistent, and make sure the option appears before -jar. A simple Paper launch might look like java -Xms2G -Xmx2G -jar paper.jar --nogui, provided 2 GB is appropriate for that host and workload. The command is an example of placement, not a recommendation for every server.
After restarting, inspect the process command line or the panel’s startup settings to verify that the intended values were applied. If a panel has separate minimum and maximum memory fields, set both rather than editing a command that the panel later replaces.
Paper users: start from the documented template carefully
Paper documents Aikar’s flag template for users who want its JVM tuning approach. Start with the version appropriate to your Java and Paper setup, then change only the memory values to match the budget you have calculated. Paper also warns that users who are unsure what a JVM flag does should avoid using it. A long copied flag list cannot compensate for a container limit that is too close to the heap.
Reduce peak demand when the heap is not the only problem
Lowering the heap can prevent a kill only if the server still has enough memory for its world and extensions. If the process remains unstable, reduce peak demand in a controlled sequence and observe the result after each change.

- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
- View distance: reduce the number of chunks kept active around players. This can lower the amount of world data the server must maintain, at the cost of a shorter visible horizon.
- Simulation distance: reduce the area where entities and block systems actively tick. This can reduce workload while preserving a larger visual distance.
- Concurrent work: stagger backups, map rendering, world generation, and other jobs instead of running them during the busiest play period.
- Plugins and mods: disable or update one suspect extension at a time, then reproduce the load. A plugin that retains objects, scans large regions, or starts background tasks can raise memory use outside the base server.
- World activity: investigate large numbers of entities, rapidly generated chunks, or redstone-heavy areas when the kill occurs only in one location or after exploration.
These are operational tuning steps, not published capacity guarantees. Keep a change log, restart cleanly, and compare the same workload after each adjustment so that a lower setting does not hide a separate leak or configuration error.
Confirm that the repair worked
-
Run a controlled restart
Start the server with the revised values and watch the first minutes of startup. Confirm that the Java process remains alive, the world loads, and no immediate allocation error appears.
-
Exercise the normal peak
Let the server handle the activity that previously caused the kill: player joins, exploration, scheduled saves, backups, or plugin jobs. An idle server proves very little about peak memory.

Watch the enforced metric
Use the panel’s memory graph or host metrics to compare the process’s peak with the hard limit. A graph that reaches the ceiling at the moment of termination points to the limit even if the Minecraft log is clean.
-
Recheck logs after the test
Look for a new kernel OOM entry, a panel event, or a Java exception. If the server now reports
OutOfMemoryErrorrather than disappearing, Java is receiving enough time to report the failure; the heap or workload still needs adjustment.
Choose between tuning, more RAM, and migration
| Option | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Lower -Xms and -Xmx |
The current limit has some unused headroom and the heap is simply oversized | Less heap is available for large worlds or extensions, so peak workload must be tested |
| Reduce view or simulation distance and background jobs | The kill occurs during a predictable workload spike | Lower simulation or visual range and delayed maintenance tasks can affect gameplay or operations |
| Remove or reconfigure a memory-heavy plugin or mod | Logs and controlled tests associate the spike with one extension | Features provided by that extension may be lost or require replacement |
| Install compatible physical RAM | The machine has free slots or supported capacity and the operating system itself is the bottleneck | Compatibility and installation must be verified; hardware work does not raise a provider’s container limit |
| Move to a higher-memory container or host | The current panel or cgroup limit leaves no safe reserve after tuning | Migration, data transfer, DNS, and service configuration require planning |
Buying or installing physical memory
Before ordering a module, verify the motherboard or system specification for DDR generation, maximum supported capacity, slot count, and whether it uses desktop DIMMs or laptop SODIMMs. Matched modules can matter for compatibility and stability. Do not infer a module’s fit from the server’s operating system or from a seller’s generic capacity description. Exact type and maximum capacity require the host hardware specification.

Raising a hosted limit
If the server runs in a container or managed panel, adding RAM to the physical machine you do not control will not change your assigned ceiling. Ask the provider for the enforced memory limit and a plan or container with enough room for the heap, JVM overhead, operating system, and every co-hosted service. Copy the world and configuration, document the Java version and startup command, and test the new limit before inviting players back.
Common failure branches
It still prints only Killed after lowering -Xmx
Check whether the panel is enforcing a lower limit than you expected, whether another service consumed the reserve, and whether -Xms was left high. Re-read the kernel or panel event at the exact failure time. If the process reaches the cgroup ceiling, lowering the heap may help only when it creates enough room for native allocations and co-hosted services; otherwise the limit itself must increase or the workload must shrink.
The server now reports OutOfMemoryError
This is useful evidence that Java is detecting the shortage. Confirm whether the message names heap space or another allocation, then compare the requested workload with the current heap. Do not immediately assign all remaining host memory to -Xmx; preserve the Paper-recommended reserve and test plugin, world, and player peaks.
Startup fails after reducing -Xms
Check for a typo, an invalid unit, duplicate flags, or a panel field that expects megabytes rather than a Java suffix. Restore the backed-up command, make one change, and verify the effective launch line. A lower initial heap should not be used to conceal a malformed command.
Lag remains even though the process is no longer killed
Avoid treating survival as proof of adequate performance. Memory pressure may have been reduced while CPU-heavy simulation, chunk generation, or a plugin remains the cause of lag. Keep the memory reserve, then investigate view distance, simulation distance, concurrent jobs, and individual extensions separately.
Quick Recap
Rules of thumb to retain
- A plain
Killedcan indicate the operating system, a container, or a panel limit; it is not the same diagnostic as a Java heap exception. - The enforced VM or container ceiling is the number that matters, not the advertised physical total.
-Xmxcovers the Java heap only. Reserve memory for the JVM outside the heap, the operating system, and other services.- Paper’s Aikar guidance recommends reducing
XmsandXmxby about 1000–1500 MB from the available budget, with additional reserve when the host does more work. - Minecraft Help’s concrete small-system example is 2 GB allocated on a 4 GB system; systems with 8 GB or more may allow a larger allocation after the real limit and workload are checked.
- When no safe headroom remains, compatible physical RAM or a higher-memory hosting limit is the direct fix; flags alone cannot create memory.
