Use the 17-digit number in your Steam Community profile’s numeric /profiles/ URL. Open your profile, choose Edit Profile, inspect the Custom URL area, and copy the number shown after /profiles/. That number is your SteamID64—the identifier most servers, admin panels and whitelists mean when they ask for a Steam64 ID.
What a Steam64 ID is
SteamID64 is the 64-bit identifier assigned to a particular Steam account. Steam Support describes SteamID as “a unique identifier for a specific Steam account” and identifies the commonly used 64-bit form as a 17-digit number. It belongs to the account, not to the name other players see in-game.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters when an administrator creates an allowlist, ban list or permissions entry. A display name can be edited in Profile Settings, while the account identifier remains the same. Steam Support states that your SteamID and Steam Account Name cannot be changed, even by Steam Support staff members. Entering a player name instead of the requested ID can therefore identify the wrong person or fail to match anyone at all.
The receiving system decides which representation it accepts. SteamID64 is the usual choice for a field labelled SteamID64 or Steam64. Some tools instead request SteamID3 or Steam Hex. Those are different representations of the account identifier; use them only when the server or panel explicitly names that format.

Find your SteamID64 in Steam’s profile editor
This is the direct method described by Steam Support. You do not need to change your visible profile name, and you do not need to guess a number from your username.
- Open your Steam Community Profile. Go to the profile belonging to the account you need to add to the list.
- Choose Edit Profile. The profile editor contains the setting that controls your Community URL.
- Locate the Custom URL area. Look at the profile URL shown there. If you have never created a custom Community URL, Steam displays a numeric profile URL containing your 64-bit ID.
- Remove an existing custom URL if necessary. If the box contains a chosen word or name, delete that text from the Custom URL field. Steam says that removing the custom text reveals the numeric profile URL containing the 64-bit ID.
- Read the numeric profile URL. Copy the complete number that appears after
/profiles/. Do not copy the wordprofiles, the slash, or any surrounding punctuation. - Paste it into the administrator’s field. Use the number exactly as copied when the destination asks for SteamID64 or Steam64.
The essential pattern is steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198#########. The digits following /profiles/ are the value you need. A profile address in the form steamcommunity.com/id/yourname is different: it is a vanity URL and hides the numeric identifier.
How to tell whether you are looking at the right URL
Numeric profile URL
A numeric URL uses the /profiles/ path followed by a long string of digits. That string is the SteamID64. It is the value to copy for a SteamID64 whitelist field.

A vanity URL uses the /id/ path followed by a custom name. It is easier to read, but it is not the 17-digit ID itself. If your profile still shows this form, use the Custom URL field in Edit Profile to expose the numeric URL. ValvePython documentation also demonstrates resolving a vanity URL to the corresponding numeric /profiles/ URL when a programmatic lookup is required.

Why the path matters
Do not treat every string in a Steam profile address as interchangeable. The path tells you what you are seeing: /profiles/ exposes the numeric account identifier, while /id/ names the vanity address. The administrator’s field may reject a vanity name even though it opens the correct profile in a browser.
Copy and verify the 17-digit value
Before saving an entry, perform a quick check. It prevents the most common causes of a whitelist failure.
- Count the identifier’s shape. SteamID64 is a 17-digit number according to Steam Support. A short username, a name with letters, or a bracketed value is not SteamID64.
- Copy the entire value. Include every digit after
/profiles/; do not omit leading or trailing digits. - Remove formatting. Paste plain digits with no spaces, commas, quotation marks or punctuation.
- Check the field label. Confirm that the server or panel requests SteamID64. If it asks for another representation, stop and obtain that representation instead of submitting the 17-digit number automatically.
- Keep the account context. If you manage several Steam accounts, verify that the profile open in the browser is the account that will join the server.
A reliable way to avoid transcription errors is to copy directly from the numeric URL and paste once into the destination field. Re-typing a 17-digit value makes a single-digit mistake difficult to spot.

Which Steam identifier belongs in an admin list?
Look at the exact wording used by the server configuration, control panel or administrator. The same Steam account can be represented in several formats, but a parser generally expects one specific form.

- SteamID64 (Steam64): the 17-digit decimal value from the numeric
/profiles/URL. This is the commonly requested format for game servers, admin panels and Steam API tools. - SteamID3: a bracketed representation such as
[U:1:…]. Use it only when the receiving system explicitly requests SteamID3. - Steam Hex: a hexadecimal representation. Use it only when the field or administrator explicitly says Steam Hex.
Do not convert formats merely because another guide uses a different one. The correct value is the one that matches the receiving system’s label and validation rules. If an administrator sends you a template, preserve its requested format rather than assuming that SteamID64 is accepted everywhere.
What changes—and what does not
Your visible player name can change
The name shown to other players is a profile setting. You can edit it, so it is not a dependable permanent key for an allowlist or permissions record.
Your SteamID64 stays tied to the account
Steam Support says the SteamID cannot be changed, including by Steam Support staff. Consequently, a correctly recorded SteamID64 should continue to identify the same Steam account even after the account’s visible player name changes.

A custom URL is not the account ID
A custom Community URL is a readable alias. Removing the custom text in the editor reveals the underlying numeric profile URL; the alias itself should not be pasted into a SteamID64 field.

Troubleshooting a missing or rejected Steam64 ID
You see only /id/yourname
Your profile has a vanity URL. Return to Edit Profile, find Custom URL, and remove the text in that box. Steam then exposes the numeric profile URL containing the 64-bit ID. Copy the digits after /profiles/. If you are working with software rather than the Steam editor, a resolver can translate the vanity URL to its numeric profile URL; ValvePython’s documentation describes that distinction and resolution process.
The panel rejects the number
First check the field name. A rejection may mean the panel expects SteamID3 or Steam Hex rather than SteamID64. Read the administrator’s instructions and provide the requested representation. If the field does say SteamID64, recopy the complete 17-digit value and remove spaces or punctuation.
The whitelist entry does not work after saving
Verify that the saved entry still contains the full numeric value and that it was entered in the correct list or permissions field. Compare the stored digits with the number in your current numeric profile URL. Also confirm that the server is matching SteamID64 rather than a different identifier format; an otherwise correct account number will not match a parser configured for another representation.

You copied an incomplete number
SteamID64 is 17 digits. Compare the pasted value with the complete sequence after /profiles/. Do not add digits based on a guess; recopy the URL directly.
A repeatable workflow for server applications
When an administrator asks for your identifier, follow the same sequence each time:
- Open the Steam Community Profile for the account that will connect to the server.
- Enter Edit Profile and inspect Custom URL.
- If a custom alias is present, remove its text so Steam displays the numeric profile URL.
- Copy the complete decimal value after
/profiles/. - Read the server’s field label and confirm whether it requests SteamID64, SteamID3 or Steam Hex.
- Paste the matching representation without spaces or punctuation.
- Check the saved entry against the source profile before testing access.
This process separates two tasks that are often confused: locating the account’s immutable identifier and choosing the representation a particular server understands. The first comes from the Steam profile; the second comes from the server’s instructions.
Why administrators prefer an ID over a name
An allowlist must continue to recognize an account when its visible name changes. SteamID64 provides a stable account-level value, whereas a display name is a mutable profile setting. That makes the numeric ID suitable for identity-based configuration when a server or panel supports it.
Stability does not mean every tool accepts the same text. One administrator may request a 17-digit SteamID64, while another configuration may be built around SteamID3 or Steam Hex. The account is the same, but the written representation differs. Always follow the destination field’s specified format.

Final checks before you submit
- The value came from the Steam Community Profile’s numeric
/profiles/URL. - It contains the full 17-digit SteamID64.
- It has no spaces or punctuation.
- The profile belongs to the account that needs access.
- The server field explicitly requests SteamID64, or you have supplied the alternate format it names.
- You did not substitute a display name or a vanity
/id/URL.
Once those checks pass, the number after /profiles/ is the Steam64 value to give the administrator or paste into a SteamID64 whitelist field.
