If your camera won’t turn on in Microsoft Teams, first check that Teams is using the right camera and that no other app is using it. Then test the camera in the Windows Camera app: if it works there, focus on Teams or browser permissions; if it fails there too, check Windows access, physical privacy controls, the connection, drivers, and the device.
Start with the checks that fix the most common problems
- Close other camera apps. Quit other video-call software and any app that may be using the camera, then try Teams again.
- Reconnect an external webcam. Unplug it and connect it securely again. If possible, try another USB port.
- Restart your PC and install available updates. Restart Windows, then check for available Windows and Teams updates.
- Select the right camera in Teams. Open Teams settings and go to Devices. Choose the camera you intend to use. In the Teams desktop app, a test call can help check camera, microphone, and speaker operation. Test calls are not available in Teams on the web. Microsoft explains how to manage Teams device settings.
Check whether the problem is Teams or Windows
Open the Windows Camera app and see whether it shows a live picture. Microsoft Support advises: “If the camera works in one app but not another, the issue lies with the app settings.” See Microsoft’s Windows camera troubleshooting steps.

- Camera works in Windows Camera: The camera itself is responding. Check Teams settings and, if you use Teams in a browser, that browser’s site permission.
- Camera also fails in Windows Camera: Check Windows camera access, any physical privacy control, the camera connection and device state. Driver, security-software, or hardware problems may also be involved.
Allow camera access in Windows
Teams and web browsers count as desktop apps for Windows camera permissions. Enabling access for Store apps alone may not be enough. The setting Let desktop apps access your camera may be necessary, and desktop apps might not appear as individually selectable apps in the Store-app list.

If a permission is off but greyed out, or you cannot change it, the device administrator may control it. On a work or school PC, ask your IT administrator rather than trying to bypass an organization’s policy. Microsoft describes Windows camera permissions.
If you use Teams in a browser, allow the website too
Windows access does not automatically grant a website permission to use your camera. In the browser, allow camera access for the Teams site and select the intended camera if a device selector is available. Then refresh the Teams page and rejoin the meeting. Teams web’s device controls differ from the desktop app; Microsoft’s web troubleshooting guidance covers Chrome, Safari, Edge, and Firefox, though browser support details can change. Check for a shutter, privacy key, or manufacturer setting
A camera can be blocked physically even when Windows and Teams permissions are on. Look for a shutter or slider over the lens, a keyboard camera-privacy key, or a privacy setting in the PC manufacturer’s software. For some Lenovo devices, Microsoft points users to Lenovo Vantage privacy settings; other manufacturers may use different controls.

If Windows Camera also fails, check the device
Built-in camera
Confirm that the camera is enabled and recognized in Device Manager. Check the keyboard and manufacturer privacy controls again, and consider whether security software or an administrator policy is blocking access. Windows camera drivers may also be involved. Microsoft notes that the in-box UVC driver can resolve some camera problems, but the appropriate driver path depends on the device; avoid installing a generic driver-updater tool or an unverified driver.
External webcam
Check that the USB connection is secure and that Windows recognizes the camera in Device Manager. If it fails in Windows Camera as well as Teams after connection and permission checks, a driver or hardware problem becomes more plausible. A replacement webcam is not a first step for a permissions or Teams configuration issue.

Intermittent detection on Teams personal
For Teams personal accounts, Microsoft describes Basic camera driver mode under advanced camera options as a possible remedy for intermittent detection or problems with advanced camera features. It is device-dependent and may disable some manufacturer features, so treat it as an optional troubleshooting setting rather than a universal fix. See Microsoft’s Teams personal camera guidance.
When to get help
If the camera still fails after checking permissions, app conflicts, privacy controls, and device recognition, contact Microsoft support or the camera manufacturer. For a managed work or school PC, contact your IT administrator if access is restricted by policy. If the Windows Camera test and device checks point to failed camera hardware, repair or replacement may be appropriate; a new webcam will not fix blocked permissions or an incorrect Teams camera selection.
