First identify what is not fitting: the Google TV or Chromecast home screen, one app or video, or a phone screen cast to the TV. A cropped or enlarged picture usually calls for checking display framing on both the streaming device and the television; low video detail, borders around the picture, and a blank screen point to different issues.
Start by identifying what “not full size” means
Look at where the problem appears and what the picture is doing. The control responsible may be on the Google device, the TV, in an app, or in the network connection.

| Where the problem appears | What you see | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Google TV or Chromecast home screen and menus | Edges are missing, the picture looks enlarged, or unused space surrounds the image | Check Google device display settings and the TV’s picture-size controls |
| One app or video | The interface fits but the video has borders, is cropped, or looks low-detail | Check the app or content’s display and playback behavior; low detail is not the same as a sizing problem |
| Phone screen cast to the TV | The cast image does not appear or does not behave as expected | Check the phone-to-receiver Wi-Fi connection and casting conditions |
| No picture or an HDMI error | The TV shows no signal, a blank screen, or an HDMI warning | Troubleshoot the HDMI connection and input before changing sizing settings |
How do I make Chromecast fit my TV screen?
Check Google device display settings
On supported Google TV, Chromecast with Google TV, and Google TV Streamer devices, open Settings > Display and sound. Available controls vary by device, TV, and software version; Google lists options such as resolution and text scaling. See Google’s display settings instructions for the supported-device guidance.
Resolution and picture framing are different things. Changing resolution can affect the output format, but it is not a guaranteed fix for cropped edges or an enlarged picture. Text scaling changes the size of interface text, not the TV’s picture boundaries.

Check the TV’s picture-size setting
If the whole image is cut off or looks zoomed, use the television’s own picture-size or aspect-ratio controls. Menu names and options differ by manufacturer and model, so there is no single TV menu path that applies to every set. Consult the TV maker’s instructions for the exact control. Google likewise directs users to the TV manufacturer for brightness changes; its display-settings page does not establish a universal TV picture-size path.
If unused space appears around the picture instead of cropping, inspect the same TV controls and the app or content’s display behavior. The available evidence does not establish one universal setting that removes borders across all devices and content.

Why are the edges of my Google TV screen cut off?
When edges are missing across the home screen and menus, picture framing is the issue to investigate first: check the TV’s picture-size or aspect-ratio mode, then confirm the Google device’s display output. The symptom alone does not prove a specific cause, and the exact controls depend on the TV model.
When only a video or a single app is cropped, compare it with the home screen and another app. If the menus fit but one video does not, the issue may be specific to that app or content rather than the Google device’s overall display setting. Avoid changing resolution repeatedly as a substitute for checking framing.

If the picture is low-detail, check playback quality separately
A picture that fills the TV but looks soft or low-resolution is a playback-quality issue, not necessarily a screen-sizing problem. Google says playback quality depends on the quality purchased, device support, and network speed. Its Google TV playback guidance lists 2 Mbps for HD and 14 Mbps for 4K playback. These are playback requirements, not settings for making an image fill the screen.
If you are casting an Android phone screen
Phone screen casting has separate connection requirements. Google recommends that the Android device and Cast receiver use the same Wi-Fi network and that access-point isolation be disabled. Some Android devices may not have enough power for an optimized Cast experience. Follow Google’s Android screen-casting troubleshooting steps if the problem is limited to a phone cast rather than the Google TV interface.

If the TV shows a blank screen or HDMI error
A blank screen or HDMI warning is a connection problem, not evidence that the picture is merely scaled incorrectly. Google recommends checking the connection, trying another HDMI input, and checking for updates to the device, app, and TV. Its HDMI troubleshooting instructions also mention a compatible HDMI extension cable as one possible step for HDMI errors; that is not a general remedy for a picture-size mismatch.
- Confirm the streaming device is firmly connected and the TV is set to the input it uses.
- Try another HDMI input on the TV.
- Check for updates to the Google device, the app, and the television.
- Use Google’s HDMI guidance for any additional steps that match the error shown.
When to get model-specific help
If the picture remains cropped after checking Google’s display settings and the TV’s picture-size controls, consult the TV manufacturer’s support for the exact model. The Google support guidance does not provide one universal fix for every television, and the right next step depends on whether the issue affects all screens, only particular content, or only a cast phone screen.
