Fix a Browser Tab That Jumps to the End or Opens in a New Window

A tab at the far end and a tab detached into another window are different problems. Identify which happened, then use the relevant Chrome or Firefox fix.

“My tab is going too far” can mean two different things: a new tab appears at the far end of the tab bar, or an existing tab is dragged out into its own window. The right fix depends on which moved—and which browser you use. In Chrome, dragging reorders tabs and dragging one outside the browser window opens a new window. In Firefox, separate preferences affect where new tabs and related links appear.

First identify what moved

Watch the tab bar the next time it happens, then match the behavior to the closest description:

  • A new tab appears at the far right: This is a tab-insertion-position issue. In Firefox, separate preferences govern general new-tab placement and placement for links related to the current tab.
  • An existing tab leaves the tab bar and appears in a separate window: This is tab detachment. In Chrome, dragging a tab outside the window opens a new window, so a drag that begins unintentionally can explain the behavior.
  • Other tabs shift when you have many open: The active tab may simply be brought into view as the tab strip scrolls. The available documentation does not establish that this is your specific symptom; note what moved and identify your browser before changing settings.

For a precise diagnosis, note your browser, operating system, and whether a new tab appeared, an existing tab moved, or the tab bar merely shifted.

If an existing tab opens in a separate window

Chrome: check for an accidental drag

Google’s Chrome Help says, “To change the order of your tabs, drag a tab along the top of the browser window.” Dragging a tab outside the window opens it in a new window. If that happens, drag the detached tab back into the desired window’s tab strip to reunite it. That recovery follows from Chrome’s documented drag behavior.

Firefox: treat detachment advice as version-dependent

A Mozilla Support Forum answer describes a Firefox preference named browser.tabs.allowTabDetach that, according to that guidance, is available in Firefox 74 and newer and can disable tab detachment. The answer also says the tab menu can still offer a way to move a tab into a new window. This is community support guidance, not a current official Firefox Help instruction; check that the preference exists and applies to your installed version before changing it.

If new tabs appear at the far right in Firefox

Mozilla Support Forum guidance describes two separate advanced preferences:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • browser.tabs.insertAfterCurrent controls general new-tab placement.
  • browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent controls where tabs opened from related links appear.

If the unwanted placement concerns only links opened from a tab, changing the general preference may not address it; check the related-link preference instead. To inspect these settings, type about:config in Firefox’s address bar and search for the relevant preference. Change an advanced preference only deliberately, and rely on this support-forum guidance with the version caveat in mind.

  • Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.

Check whether the tab is pinned

In Firefox, clicking a link from a pinned tab opens that link in a separate new tab so the pinned tab remains. That is expected behavior, not necessarily a tab-placement fault. If the new tab appears when you click a link in a pinned tab, this documented behavior may explain what you are seeing.

Would a different tab layout help?

Chrome offers vertical tabs and related controls, which move tab management to the side of the browser window rather than keeping tabs in a horizontal strip. Google’s April 7, 2026 product announcement describes moving tabs to the side. This is a layout choice, not evidence that vertical tabs prevent accidental dragging or fix a new-tab placement preference.

What to report if the behavior continues

Before changing more settings, capture the behavior as precisely as you can. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Browser name and version, plus your operating system.
  • Whether the tab was newly created, already open, pinned, or dragged.
  • Whether it appeared at the end, detached into another window, or only caused other tabs to shift.
  • What action immediately preceded the change, such as clicking a link or moving the pointer over a tab.

Those details distinguish a placement preference from tab detachment, pinned-tab behavior, or ordinary tab-strip movement.
