A test can pass and still miss the behavior you care about. In a 2026 first-person account, HackerNoon author @dedemavci describes five Pixbu development mistakes that exposed the gap between what a check measured and what its author thought it measured—from stale sprite metadata to sandbox dashboard figures. The practical question is simple: does your test observe the actual outcome, or only a proxy for it?
1. Stale sprite metadata made shrinking art look correct
Pixbu’s pixel creature was supposed to grow through five life stages. After the artwork changed, the tests stayed green because the size guard compared values against metadata that had not been remeasured. It verified agreement with old expectations, not the new images.

@dedemavci reported these filled-pixel counts for the stages: 6,572 for baby, 5,627 for teen, 5,840 for adult, 6,244 for elder, and 6,338 for mythic. In that account, the first evolution shrank by 14% even though the test passed. Those are author-reported measurements, not an independent image audit.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe lesson is to measure the changed artifact when the requirement concerns the artifact. If a visual property matters, a test that reads cached or hand-maintained metadata can become detached from what users actually see. Recalculate expectations from the current image, or make the test inspect the rendered output.

2. The bounding box measured ears, not the skull
Cosmetics needed to align with the creature’s head. A head bounding box seemed like a reasonable measurement, but the ears set its tallest extent. The author reported almost no variation in that box—about ±1 px—so it concealed the skull’s changing shape.
Counting filled pixels across each row revealed the distinction: the row at ear height contained 8 pixels, while a broader skull row contained 73. The author says using the row-based approach corrected placement across 514 frames. The Devpost project page also describes the sprite-anchor and cosmetic-fit problem: Pixbu on Devpost.

- Over 99% Accurate – More than 99% accurate in detecting Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG) with the 300 ng/ml cut-off level and 80 hours detection time. Our test can detect the presence of alcohol up to 80 hours after consumption.
- Easy to Use Design & Instant Results - Each test is sealed in individual pouch for easy carry and sanitary. It is easy to use and administer. Dip the test in urine for 10 seconds and read the result in 5 minutes. 2 lines appears if clean; 1 control line only appears if not clean.
- Low Cost and Convenient - Save time and money with our at home EtG urine test by avoiding the typical high cost and long wait times at a standard laboratory.
- Perfect For pre-employment, school alcohol testing, rehab clinics, workplace testing, law enforcement DUI or personal home alcohol testing.
This is a proxy problem. The bounding box accurately described the outer extent of the whole sprite, but the question was where to place an item relative to the skull. Pick a measurement whose geometry corresponds to the target feature; a valid measurement can still be irrelevant to the decision.

A guard test was intended to ensure that a critical function was called. It remained green after the call was wrapped in if (false). The test had found the call’s text in the file; it had not established that execution reached it.

The author also describes two attempted mutation edits that never changed the file because line endings prevented the patch from matching. Consequently, the tests ran against unchanged source. The two failure modes are different: a test may observe source text rather than runtime behavior, and a planned mutation may not have been applied at all.
To check whether a test protects behavior, make a deliberate, relevant mutation that should break that behavior, then run the test and confirm it fails. Before interpreting the result, verify the mutation actually reached the file. A green result against unchanged code says nothing about whether the test would catch the intended defect.

4. One failed lookup did not establish impossibility
In one example, the author initially checked a store page’s status but not its contents, then found version, update-date, and release-note signals in the page itself. The status check had not answered the fuller question about what information the page contained.
In a separate network anecdote, one timeout led to an assumption that the remote was unreachable; the author reports that all 10 of 10 later connection attempts succeeded. Neither episode proves how every store page or network behaves. They show why a single failed observation should not be expanded into a claim about what is impossible or unavailable.

State what you checked, when you checked it, and what output you observed. If the claim is important, repeat the check or use an independent route. A failed command is evidence about that attempt and its conditions—not automatically about every attempt or the underlying capability.
5. Sandbox figures looked like business results
The author reports that a dashboard showed $1,573 in revenue and 136 customers while its “Sandbox data” toggle was on. In the same account, real revenue was $0 and installs were 22. These are figures reported by @dedemavci, not independently inspected dashboard data.
Numbers without environment context can mislead even when the dashboard displays them correctly. Keep sandbox and production results distinct in labels, reports, screenshots, and discussions; include the environment alongside any figure that might otherwise be mistaken for a live business result.

How to check whether a test measures the thing you care about
- Name the target property. Be precise about whether you need pixel area, skull position, execution of a function, successful access, or production revenue.
- Inspect the evidence source. Ask whether the check observes the current artifact or a proxy such as stale metadata, source text, a bounding box dominated by ears, or a sandbox view.
- Challenge the check. Make a behavior-changing mutation and confirm both that it was applied and that the test responds as expected.
- Scope conclusions to observations. Record the method, date, environment, and output; do not turn one null result or failed attempt into a universal claim.
@dedemavci’s HackerNoon account says Pixbu had 1,889 automated tests, but the examples show why a test count alone does not establish that the important behavior is covered. As the author puts it: “The test wasn’t lying. It was answering a different question than the one I thought I’d asked.” The account is a developer’s report, not an independent study of test quality across software projects.
