There are five Tarforge upgrade items to find in Mortal Shell 2: Muradean Actuator, Obsidian Lathe, Etching Needles, Foundry Stone and Endless Core. The first four unlock different Tarforge functions through Franz; Endless Core is installed from a Tarforge menu option and expands the normal weapon and sidearm upgrade cap. Here is the route to each item and what the available guides say it does.

The five-item route lists are from GameSpot’s 2026 guide and PowerPyx’s 2026 guide. They differ on some route details and the Foundry Stone’s precise function, so use the landmark and item name rather than relying on an exact menu label or fee.

Muradean Actuator: Village Outskirts Beacon
Follow the Village Outskirts Beacon route in the prologue and check the chest immediately after entering the Beacon area. GameSpot describes the item as nearly unavoidable along this route. If you are playing a beta save that skipped the tutorial, check your inventory before retracing the path; the item may already be there. It unlocks melee weapon upgrades at the Tarforge.

Obsidian Lathe: Martyr’s Tomb
From Widow’s Overlook Beacon, head toward Martyr’s Tomb and search the chest in its back room. The guides describe the direction slightly differently—south or southeast—so the dungeon and Beacon are the more reliable landmarks. The Lathe unlocks sidearm upgrades.

Etching Needles: Glutted Mire
Continue through Glutted Mire beyond the Sunken Village Beacon and the Shepherd encounter. Look for the chest near Ruk, before the regional boss, identified by GameSpot as Magdalena. The Etching Needles open Tarstone upgrades and leveling at the Tarforge.
Foundry Stone: Outskirts of Mammon
Go to the gate area near Outskirts of Mammon Beacon and search around the blasted ground by the castle-wall gateway. The chest is in a hostile area, so expect guards or other nearby enemies. The Foundry Stone is associated with smelting or removing weapon upgrades and recovering the resources used. The descriptions do not agree on the exact interaction or whether it requires a fee, so check the current Tarforge menu rather than assuming a specific cost or label.

Endless Core: Hidden Nave
The Endless Core is a late-game pickup in Hidden Nave, within The Unfound Path. The route guides describe a sequence involving fog, a torch and corrupted tendrils: clear the tendrils, follow the torch through the fog route, and search for the chest after getting through the fog. Install the Core using the Tarforge menu option rather than bringing it to Franz with the other four items.

Once installed, the Core removes the ordinary level cap for weapons and sidearms. PowerPyx says upgrades can reach +17 and above; that is a stated threshold, not a confirmed maximum. Neither cited guide establishes a final ceiling.

Returning the items to the Tarforge
Bring Muradean Actuator, Obsidian Lathe, Etching Needles and Foundry Stone to Franz beside the Tarforge to unlock their functions. Handle Endless Core separately through the Tarforge menu. The functions named for the first three are melee upgrades, sidearm upgrades and Tarstone leveling; the Foundry Stone’s smelting or refund details are less consistent between guides.
Can you miss a Tarforge upgrade?
PowerPyx says all five can still be collected after the final boss in free roam, before entering New Game+. That is a guide’s coverage rather than an official developer confirmation, but it indicates that a missed chest need not automatically require a new playthrough. The Muradean Actuator may already be in the inventory of a beta save that skipped the tutorial.

What is confirmed about the beta item descriptions?
An unofficial item reference lists item names and descriptions from Open Beta client build 24459107, checked August 18, 2026. It lists four unlocks and says Foundry Stone allows materials to be smelted for weapon upgrades, but expressly does not establish locations, costs, quantities, drop rates or final retail balance. The locations and fifth item above come from the two route guides, not from that beta text. The available descriptions also do not establish the final retail menu wording or an ultimate upgrade level.
