To use iSCSI in Windows 11, open the built-in Microsoft iSCSI Initiator, start its service if Windows prompts you, then discover and connect to a target using details from your storage administrator or provider. Enabling the initiator does not create storage or a target; you need an existing target portal address, target name or IQN, and any required authentication details.
What you need before connecting
Microsoft iSCSI Initiator is the Windows client that connects to remote iSCSI storage. It is separate from creating or provisioning the target. Ask the storage administrator or provider for:

- The target portal address, usually a DNS name or IP address.
- The target name or IQN to select.
- Any required CHAP credentials, initiator identity authorization, port, network adapter, or other connection settings.
Microsoft documents TCP port 3260 as the default target portal port, but confirm the port for your deployment rather than assuming it. See the New-IscsiTargetPortal reference.

How to enable iSCSI Initiator in Windows 11
- Open Start, search for iSCSI Initiator, and launch the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator desktop app.
- If Windows asks to start the Microsoft iSCSI service, approve the prompt if you intend to use iSCSI. The prompt and labels can vary by Windows build.
- In the app, open Discovery and add the target portal address. Enter a different port only if the storage administrator or provider specifies one.
- Open Targets, select the intended target, and choose Connect.
- Set authentication or advanced initiator and portal options only as directed by the storage administrator. CHAP and reverse CHAP are configuration options, not universal requirements.
- Confirm the target appears as connected. Check Disk Management for the expected disk before using it.
Do not initialize, format, or bring a shared disk online unless the storage design and administrator explicitly require it. The appropriate disk-handling procedure depends on how the target is configured.

GUI or PowerShell: which connection method should you use?
| Method | Best suited to | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| iSCSI Initiator app | A one-off connection or a user who prefers Windows dialogs | Lets you add a portal, discover targets, select one, and connect through the graphical interface. |
| PowerShell iSCSI cmdlets | Repeatable setup, administration, or automation | Adds portals, lists discovered targets, connects to a selected target, and inspects sessions and connections. |
Microsoft’s iSCSI PowerShell module reference documents the commands and their parameters. Run PowerShell elevated if your organization requires administrative permissions.

If the storage configuration requires a particular port, initiator network address, CHAP setting, or multipath behavior, use the corresponding cmdlet parameters with the administrator-provided values. The Connect-IscsiTarget reference documents connection options.
Choose whether the connection should persist after restart
A normal connection is appropriate when you want to connect manually as needed. A persistent or favorite-target connection is for storage that should reconnect automatically after a restart. In the GUI, enable the persistent or favorite-target option while connecting; with PowerShell, Microsoft documents -IsPersistent $true as an option. The initiator service reconnects persistent sessions after restart. Do not make a target persistent if it should not be available automatically.

Check network path, access control and security
- Network path: Confirm the portal is reachable through the intended route and, where required, select the correct initiator adapter or address. Microsoft recommends dedicated iSCSI adapters for clustered systems; use them only when your storage design calls for them.
- Target authorization: A target may allow connections only from an authorized initiator IQN or source IP address. Confirm the Windows initiator identity and target-side access rules with the administrator.
- Authentication: Configure CHAP or reverse CHAP only if the target requires it, and obtain credentials through an approved channel.
- Firewall: Keep Windows Firewall enabled. Scope network access to the required hosts and services according to the storage design instead of disabling the firewall as a troubleshooting shortcut. See Microsoft’s Windows Firewall overview.
- Multipath: Do not enable MPIO or multiple sessions by default. Use multipath only when the storage array and network paths are configured to support it.
Troubleshoot a failed or missing connection
- Recheck the supplied connection details. Verify the portal address, target IQN or name, and port with the storage administrator. Port 3260 is the documented default, not a guarantee for every deployment.
- Check the network route. Confirm connectivity to the portal and that Windows is using the intended adapter or initiator address.
- Check target-side access rules. Confirm the target permits the current initiator IQN or source address and that any required authentication is correct.
- Inspect portals, sessions, and connections. In PowerShell, use
Get-IscsiTargetPortal,Get-IscsiSession, andGet-IscsiConnectionto review the current configuration and active state. - Review event logs. Check Windows and target event logs for storage connectivity errors. Microsoft’s iSCSI connection troubleshooting guidance covers session and connection checks.
- Refresh favorite-target entries if the initiator name changed. Old entries may retain the previous identity. Microsoft recommends removing and recreating them so they match the current initiator name; see its iSCSI connection troubleshooting guidance.
