Android’s built-in Private DNS is a useful first step for reducing ad and tracker requests across apps, but it does not remove every ad. For ads on web pages, use a browser with content-blocking support; for broader app filtering, consider a filtering app that uses Android’s VPN system. The right method depends on where the ads appear.
Choose a method based on where the ads appear
| Method | Coverage and filtering layer | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Browser content blocker | Filters page content and elements within the browser that supports it. | Does not cover other apps; Chrome on mobile does not support conventional browser extensions, according to AdBlock’s mobile guidance. |
| Android Private DNS | Applies a provider’s DNS filtering to requests made by the device. | Works at the domain level, not the page-element level; ads delivered from the same domain as content may remain. |
| Filtering app using a local VPN | Can filter browser and app traffic through an on-device filtering engine. | Android permits only one active VPN connection at a time, so it can conflict with another VPN. |
| Service’s own ad controls | Addresses ads integrated with a particular game, streaming service, or social app. | Availability and terms depend on the service; check its own current settings and official options. |
1. Set up Android Private DNS
Private DNS is Android’s built-in way to connect to a DNS provider using DNS-over-TLS. With a provider that filters ad-related domains, it can reduce requests across apps without installing a browser extension. It is a network-name filter, not a full content blocker: it cannot reliably remove an ad that comes from the same domain as the page or video you want.

- Open Settings and go to Network & Internet. Menu labels and locations vary by Android version and phone maker; Google’s Android network settings guide describes the system setting.
- Tap Private DNS. Choose the option to enter a private DNS provider hostname.
- Get the exact hostname from your chosen provider’s current setup instructions. For example, AdGuard’s Android DNS instructions explain its manual setup using a personal server hostname. Do not guess or reuse a hostname without confirming it with the provider.
- Save the setting, then try browsing and using the apps where you noticed ads. Filtering can vary with the provider’s rules and the way a service delivers its ads.
If the connection stops working after you enter a hostname, return to Settings → Network & Internet → Private DNS and switch back to Automatic or Off. Then check the hostname and the provider’s status before trying again.

Browser content blockers can work with page requests and elements in ways DNS filtering cannot. This makes them a better fit when ads clutter websites, but their protection generally applies only inside that browser. Chrome on mobile does not support conventional browser extensions, as AdBlock’s mobile help page explains. If you want extension-style filtering, choose a browser that supports content-blocking add-ons and confirm its current support in the browser’s official documentation.

3. Consider a system-wide filtering app
Some Android filtering apps handle traffic from browsers and other apps by routing it through an on-device filtering engine. AdGuard describes its Android app as using a local VPN for network filtering; its Android app page explains the approach. Unlike Private DNS, this can apply app-specific filtering rules, but it does not guarantee that every ad can be identified or blocked.
Android’s VPN slot is the key compatibility trade-off: only one VPN can be active at a time. A filtering app that uses the slot may require you to disconnect an existing VPN or find a compatible configuration. AdGuard also says its app is not published on Google Play and describes other distribution options. Before installing any app outside your usual store, follow the vendor’s current official instructions and make sure you understand the source of the installer.

4. Expect some in-app ads to remain
DNS and VPN-based filtering can miss ads when the ad and the content share a domain. A network-level filter may not be able to block one without also interrupting the other. This is why changing Private DNS—or enabling a filtering app—does not promise ad-free video, games, or every app.

That is not a guarantee for YouTube’s Android app, and it should not be generalized to other blockers. Treat any claim of complete in-app ad removal cautiously.

5. Check the service’s own ad controls
If ads keep appearing in one particular game, streaming service, or social app, look in that app’s settings and official help pages for ad controls or an ad-free option. This is often the practical route when ads are delivered alongside the service’s own content, where network filters may not distinguish them. Confirm the option and its terms directly with the service rather than assuming it offers a particular plan.
