TechRadar’s 2026 comparison places NordVPN first and Proton VPN third for Netflix, but its tests did not show identical results in every region. It reported that Proton VPN worked in all five regions it listed, while NordVPN did not work in Japan. Those are reviewer-reported results, not guarantees: Netflix detects VPN and proxy connections, and access can change. Your Netflix plan and streaming device also affect whether a VPN is usable.
How the two VPNs compare for Netflix
The table summarizes TechRadar’s reported ranking and regional tests. “Worked” describes that review’s findings, not a promise of current or future access. The results do not establish prices, renewal costs or performance on every device.

| VPN | TechRadar ranking in 2026 | Reported regional results | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| NordVPN | 1st | Worked in the US, UK, Australia/New Zealand and Canada; failed in Japan. | NordVPN publishes a Netflix troubleshooting guide. NordVPN support (the cited comparison identifies its support guide but does not provide a direct guide URL). |
| Proton VPN | 3rd | Worked in all five regions listed. | TechRadar tested the premium plan; the result should not be assumed to apply to the free tier. |
TechRadar’s full comparison also included other providers, with varying regional results. What “reliable access” can—and cannot—mean
No VPN can guarantee Netflix access in every country, on every server, or indefinitely. Netflix applies geoblocking and may restrict connections it identifies as coming through a VPN or proxy. VPN providers adapt, so a server that worked during a review may later stop working, or another server may behave differently. Treat a ranking as a dated snapshot, not a service-level guarantee. TechRadar reported the regional outcomes above; ExpressVPN also cautions that Netflix can sometimes restrict VPN access. ExpressVPN’s Netflix access guidance.

Check your Netflix plan before troubleshooting
Netflix says VPNs are not supported on its ad-supported experience. Its E121 message—“You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”—can indicate that an ad-supported experience is connected through a VPN or proxy. Check your plan before changing servers or reinstalling an app. For other cases, Netflix says a VPN can make a device or network appear to connect from a different physical location and recommends turning it off if problems persist. Set up the VPN on the device you actually stream with
Netflix apps are available on many TVs, streaming players, phones, tablets, computers and consoles, but that does not mean a VPN app is available on each one. VPN support depends on the device and provider. Before subscribing, confirm that the provider supports your device directly or offers a setup method that meets your needs. A router may be an option for some setups, but extra hardware is not necessary for every viewer.
For example, ExpressVPN documents apps for selected streaming devices and router setup. It also offers MediaStreamer, which it describes as a separate DNS service, not a VPN: it does not provide the same security and privacy benefits, does not let you change your location, and supports only US Netflix. What to do when Netflix detects a VPN
If Netflix displays a proxy error, work through the cause before assuming the service is permanently blocked. Netflix’s first relevant checks are whether your plan supports VPN use and whether a VPN is active. The steps below combine Netflix’s guidance with general troubleshooting suggestions; they are not a guarantee that access will be restored.
- Check your plan. If you use an ad-supported experience, Netflix does not support VPN connections on that plan.
- Confirm whether the VPN is active. If the problem continues, Netflix recommends turning it off to test whether the connection is the cause.
- Try another server in the intended country. Switching servers may help when Netflix detects a proxy or VPN.
- Restart or refresh the app. Clearing browser cache or reinstalling the app may help; for a smart TV or console, try restarting the device.
- Test the website instead of the app. This can help identify whether the problem is specific to the app or device.
- Check for DNS leaks. A suspected leak is one possible explanation, not a confirmed cause in every proxy-error case.
How to choose among the two
- Choose by target region: the cited comparison reported a Japan failure for NordVPN, while Proton VPN passed all five regions it tested.
- Match the plan: Proton VPN’s cited Netflix result was on its premium plan, not evidence about the free tier.
- Verify device support: check for an app or setup method for your TV, streaming player or other device before paying.
- Check the total subscription cost: current prices and renewal terms are not established by the cited comparison, so confirm both with the provider before subscribing.
- Expect results to change: regional access can vary as Netflix blocks VPN connections and services adapt.
For a different independent ranking, compare the criteria and test coverage in Top10VPN’s Netflix guide with TechRadar’s comparison. Neither ranking makes access universal or permanent.
