For GPS-tracked workouts, Fitbit uses GPS data to calculate distance; ordinary daily distance estimates instead use steps and stride length. That difference—and whether GPS connected before you started moving—can explain why a run’s pace or distance looks off.
What pace means on Fitbit
Pace is a workout metric available for supported Fitbit activities, including running. The official guidance does not establish one universal pace display, unit, or live-screen layout across all Fitbit models. Where and how you see it depends on your device and app experience.

For a GPS-tracked activity, Fitbit derives distance from GPS data rather than the usual step-based estimate. Its documented step-distance calculation is steps × stride length = distance traveled. If you start moving before GPS connects, Fitbit may use steps for distance until the GPS signal is established. The two methods can therefore produce different distance—and consequently pace—results. Google explains the distance methods.
Do you need GPS to track pace?
For GPS-based distance and pace, yes: the workout needs GPS tracking. Fitbit’s workout guidance says GPS tracking is available for outdoor activities involving physical distance, such as running, walking, hiking, and biking. Supported devices may use built-in GPS, your phone’s GPS, or a dynamic GPS mode; the options vary by model. Check the GPS setup guidance for your device.

- Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate (this is not a medical device) at the wrist and uses GPS to track how far, how fast and where you’ve run.Special Feature:Bluetooth.
- Battery life: up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode; up to 20 hours in GPS mode
- Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance
- Run your best with helpful training tools, including race time predictions and finish time estimates
- Track all the ways you move with built-in activity profiles for running, cycling, track run, virtual run, pool swim, Pilates, HIIT, breathwork and more
For example, Fitbit Charge 6 has documented GPS settings. That does not mean every Fitbit has built-in GPS or the same pace display. Built-in GPS can affect battery life, and a device that loses GPS during an activity may not switch to another GPS type until the workout is over.
How to record a GPS workout and find its pace
- Check your model’s GPS options. Use the official setup instructions for your Fitbit to find the GPS mode available for the exercise. Enable the appropriate mode; menu labels and choices differ by device.
- Start outdoors and wait for GPS to connect. If you begin moving first, distance may initially be based on steps rather than GPS.
- Keep your phone nearby if using phone GPS. The workout depends on the phone’s GPS in that mode.
- Finish and sync the activity. Review the saved workout details in the Google Health app. Depending on device and app context, an activity summary can include distance, duration, pace, average heart rate, and splits. A GPS workout intensity map can show pace, distance, and heart-rate zones.
Running dashboards are not identical across the Fitbit range. Google’s run-trends page limits its Run dashboard to particular Pixel Watch models; other Fitbit devices can access running goals and records in the app. See Fitbit GPS workout instructions and Google’s run trends and dashboard details for the current device-specific options.

Why your Fitbit pace may look inaccurate
- GPS was still connecting when you started. Fitbit may use step-based distance until it establishes a GPS signal, which can make early distance differ from GPS-based distance.
- The signal was weak or obstructed. GPS needs a direct path to satellites. Tall buildings and wooded areas can delay connection or affect route and activity data.
- GPS was lost during the workout. A map may not appear after signal loss, and some GPS modes do not switch to another mode mid-activity.
- You are comparing different distance methods. Daily distance estimated from steps and stride length is not the same measurement as GPS workout distance.
- Your device or app shows metrics differently. GPS settings, live workout screens, saved summaries, and trends vary by model and app context.
For a useful comparison, check whether both readings came from GPS or steps, whether GPS connected before movement began, what GPS mode and signal conditions applied, and whether you are comparing a live screen with a saved summary or trend. Fitbit’s official material does not establish a universal pace formula, unit, smoothing window, sampling rate, or accuracy figure across models, so a single numerical accuracy claim or model ranking would not be supported.

What to check when a run looks wrong
- Confirm GPS is enabled for the selected exercise and use the mode supported by your model.
- Begin outside and wait for the connection before setting off.
- If using phone GPS, keep the phone near the tracker throughout the workout.
- After the activity, sync and compare the saved workout details rather than assuming the live screen and app trend use the same presentation.
- If the issue persists, follow the GPS instructions for your exact Fitbit model; there is no single menu path shared by every device.
