Short answer: Fitbit Edge is the wrist-based trainer: it adds a Hybrid OLED display, built-in GPS, elevation tracking, ECG, richer workout controls and notifications. Fitbit Air is a screenless tracker designed for quiet, continuous wear, with detailed review and workout controls handled in the Google Health app.
The practical decision is whether live information and phone-free route tracking are worth Edge’s $80 higher launch price. Google announced Air from $99.99 and Edge at $179.99 in 2026; Edge pre-orders opened October 12, with retail availability announced for October 27.

The screen changes the entire interaction model
Edge is a glanceable training display
Edge’s Hybrid OLED screen is not just a place to read the time. Its tiles surface steps, weather, workouts, sleep, cycle tracking and heart rate without opening a phone. Google also lists Maps, media controls and call or message notifications. The company says the display offers 46% more viewing area than previous trackers, which should make workout data and map views easier to read, although that is a manufacturer comparison rather than an independent measurement.

Air is intentionally notification-free
Air has no display, so it cannot show a pace screen, route, message preview or pause control on your wrist. It quietly records data while you wear it; detailed trends and app-started workouts are reviewed in Google Health later. That is an advantage for sleep and distraction-free wear, but it means carrying and checking a phone whenever you need maps, live metrics or a workout control.
GPS, elevation and workout tracking
Edge can track an outdoor session without your phone
Built-in precision GPS and an altimeter let Edge record routes and elevation directly. That matters for runners, cyclists and hikers who want pace, distance, climb or heart-rate-zone feedback without carrying a handset. Google claims up to 40% improved GPS tracking accuracy over previous generations; this is a company claim, not an independently verified test result.

Air depends on the phone-centered experience
The Air launch material describes automatic detection of common activities and workout starts through the app, but it does not claim an integrated GPS receiver. Treat Air as a phone-assisted tracker rather than assuming it can map a route independently. If you need a route file or live distance while the phone stays behind, Edge is the relevant model.

Edge supports more than 50 exercise modes started from the wrist and can automatically recognize up to 100 workouts. Air’s announcement does not provide a comparable number, so its activity coverage should not be interpreted as equivalent simply because both devices recognize exercises automatically.

Health sensors and what their readings mean
Air covers the core wellness baseline
Air continuously tracks heart rate and provides heart-rhythm monitoring with Afib alerts, blood-oxygen saturation (SpO2), resting heart rate, heart-rate variability, sleep stages and sleep duration. For users primarily interested in overnight recovery and general wellness trends, that is a substantial set of measurements without adding a screen.
Edge adds ECG and skin temperature
Edge retains continuous optical heart-rate tracking and adds an on-wrist ECG app plus a dedicated skin-temperature sensor. Its Health Guardian trend features can include blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends, but those are informational wellness features rather than clinical measurements. ECG access is limited to select countries and is not intended for people under 22. Health Guardian availability also varies by country and subscription.

Battery, charging and long-term repair
Google advertises approximately seven days for Edge and up to one week for Air. Both launch claims say five minutes of charging can provide a full day. These are manufacturer estimates under specified test conditions, not guaranteed results; GPS use, display time, sensors and notification settings can change actual runtime.
Edge has the stronger stated longevity plan. Google describes it as the company’s first repairable fitness tracker, with a replaceable battery and modular internal architecture. Air emphasizes low weight and quick top-ups instead. The announcements do not provide a user-replaceable battery specification for Air.

Durability and water-use caveats
Edge is described as 5 ATM and IP68 at factory departure. Those ratings do not make it waterproof or dustproof indefinitely; seals can age, and the factory-condition qualification matters after repairs or wear. Air’s cited announcement describes sweatproof and wetproof silicone Active Bands but gives no equivalent tracker-level ATM or IP rating. Do not infer equal swimming or submersion protection from the bands alone.
Price, launch timing and Premium requirements
Google’s announced starting prices are $99.99 for Air and $179.99 for Edge, a difference of $80 before replacement bands or future subscription renewals. Air’s Special Edition was announced at $129.99. Both launch announcements include a three-month Google Health Premium trial. Some coaching and Health Guardian functions require Premium, and feature availability varies by country, so the purchase price does not guarantee every software capability indefinitely.
Google announced Edge pre-orders on October 12, 2026, with retail availability scheduled for October 27. Air was announced on May 7, 2026; the cited announcement does not establish a single worldwide retail date. Retail inventory, regional pricing and included accessories can therefore differ.

- Both products require most Android phones running Android 11 or later, or Apple phones running iOS 16.4 or later.
- A Google Account and the Google Health app are required for setup and detailed data review.
- ECG and Health Guardian features are country-dependent; ECG has an age restriction of 22 and older.
- Wellness trends, including blood-pressure and insulin-resistance trends, are not diagnoses or substitutes for medical care.
- Air’s official launch information does not establish built-in GPS, a numeric exercise-mode count or a tracker-level water-resistance rating.
Which Fitbit should you buy?
Choose Fitbit Edge if you:
- Run, cycle, hike or train outdoors and want GPS routes and elevation without a phone.
- Need live pace, heart-rate, workout or map information on your wrist.
- Want ECG and skin-temperature sensing in addition to the shared wellness features.
- Value notifications, media controls and a repairable, replaceable-battery design.
Choose Fitbit Air if you:
- Prioritize unobtrusive sleep and 24/7 wellness tracking.
- Find screens and notifications distracting.
- Are comfortable opening the Google Health app for workout setup and detailed analysis.
- Want the lower $99.99 starting price and do not need independent route tracking.
Edge can handle several smartwatch-like jobs—notifications, maps and media controls—but its documented strengths are fitness and health rather than a full phone-replacement experience. Air is the simpler choice when the tracker should disappear on your wrist and the phone can remain the place where you interpret the data.
