First-Touch Attribution on a Cookieless Static Nuxt Site

A static Nuxt site can capture a first landing signal in browser JavaScript, but storage lifetime, privacy obligations, and the conversion handoff must be designed separately.

You can capture a first landing signal on a statically hosted Nuxt site with browser JavaScript, but a cookie-free design is not automatically storage-free or privacy-exempt. Choose what counts as a first touch, how long to retain it, and where the later conversion will receive it. Static output can run client-side code; it does not provide a server endpoint to accept or join conversion data.

What first-touch attribution means on a static site

First-touch attribution assigns a conversion to the earliest qualifying visit or campaign signal you have retained. For a practical browser-side implementation, that signal might be agreed UTM parameters on the visitor’s initial landing URL. Decide in advance which campaign fields count and what should happen when a visitor arrives without them.

Nuxt static generation pre-renders pages, and the generated site can still include JavaScript that runs in the browser. That makes landing-page capture feasible even when the site is hosted as static files. It does not make the static host a server: Nuxt distinguishes static output from deployments with server functionality, and static output does not include server endpoints. Nuxt deployment documentation and Nuxt v4 rendering modes describe this distinction.

Capture the landing signal before navigation changes it

  1. Define the accepted fields. For example, record only the UTM fields your campaigns consistently use, such as source, medium, and campaign. Avoid treating every query parameter as attribution data.
  2. Read the initial landing URL in the browser. Capture the agreed values as early in the client-side flow as practical, before internal navigation changes the URL or loses the original landing context.
  3. Keep the first accepted record. On later internal pages, do not replace it merely because another page loads. If later campaigns are meant to reset attribution, define that as a separate, explicit rule.
  4. Use the referrer only as supplementary context. document.referrer can provide the URI of the page that linked to the current page, but it may be empty for direct navigation and referrer policy can limit what detail is exposed. It is not a complete record of campaign parameters. See MDN’s document.referrer reference.

Minimize what you retain. Prefer the campaign fields needed for the measurement purpose over a full landing URL or referrer, which could include unrelated query data. This is a sound implementation practice; it does not, by itself, settle the legal basis for storage or analytics.

Choose storage to match the attribution window

The persistence mechanism determines whether a captured signal remains available when the visitor navigates, closes a tab, or returns later. sessionStorage is scoped to an origin and tab, and its data lasts for that page session. It can suit a same-tab flow, but it does not by itself provide dependable attribution across a later visit. MDN also notes that browser behavior can vary when cookies are blocked. MDN’s sessionStorage reference explains its scope and lifetime.

Approach Persistence and availability Server or conversion integration Key consideration
Keep the signal in page memory Available only while the relevant page state remains active; not a later-visit record. Requires a way to pass the value to the conversion flow if that flow is elsewhere. Short-lived, but navigation and page lifecycle can make it unsuitable for a multi-step journey.
sessionStorage Origin- and tab-scoped; lasts for the page session. Does not submit conversion data by itself. Useful for same-tab session continuity, not reliable cross-visit attribution.
Persistent browser storage Can technically retain state beyond a tab session; the actual duration depends on the chosen implementation and browser context. Still needs a destination or handoff to associate the stored record with a conversion. Set an intentional expiry and assess privacy obligations for the specific purpose and jurisdiction.

There is no universal retention period established here. Choose one that serves the stated measurement purpose, then implement expiry rather than allowing attribution state to remain indefinitely by accident. The UK ICO says service providers are responsible for deciding storage duration; it also explains that first-party versus third-party status is not the primary privacy consideration. See its guidance on storage and access technologies.

Plan the conversion handoff separately

Capturing attribution in the browser and recording attribution against a conversion are two different jobs. A fully static Nuxt deployment can run the first job, but static files alone cannot accept a later conversion as a server request. The conversion needs a separately available destination if the signal is to be submitted or joined to a conversion record.

  • If conversion happens on the same site: decide how the client-side attribution value reaches the conversion submission and how the receiving system stores or associates it.
  • If checkout or conversion happens on another service: confirm the handoff or join mechanism with that service. Do not assume a browser-stored value will be available to a separate domain or system.
  • If there is no receiving endpoint or integration: you may capture a landing signal locally, but you have not established end-to-end attribution to the conversion.

Nuxt’s rendering-mode documentation distinguishes static client-rendered deployment from server functionality. Confirm the actual hosting and checkout architecture before presenting attribution as complete.

Privacy and reliability: “cookieless” is not “no storage”

A design without cookies may still use browser storage or link decoration. The UK ICO includes web storage and navigational tracking among storage and access technologies and says PECR permits these in particular circumstances or with valid consent. Whether an exception or consent applies depends on the jurisdiction, purpose, and implementation; the ICO guidance is UK-specific and does not decide the legal answer elsewhere. Read the ICO’s overview of storage and access technologies and obtain advice for the site’s actual audience and design.

Storage and referrer behavior are not guaranteed identically in every browser context. MDN’s Firefox-specific Storage Access Policy guide describes restrictions affecting third-party storage and referrer behavior under Firefox tracking protection. Treat it as evidence that browser settings and context can matter, not as a blanket rule for all first-party storage or all browsers.
