Usually, yes for the A40 headset—but Xbox chat and the MixAmp depend on the exact hardware. ASTRO documents an Xbox One setup for the A40 TR with an Xbox-mode MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4. A PS4-labeled MixAmp is a separate compatibility question: its PS4 setup instructions do not establish that it supports Xbox USB voice chat. Identify the MixAmp, cable, and controller before buying anything.
What can work: the headset, MixAmp, and controller are separate parts
The A40 headset’s physical connection does not determine whether the MixAmp works with Xbox. ASTRO’s documented Xbox One setup is specifically for the A40 TR with the MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 configured for Xbox. The manufacturer’s Xbox One Gen 4 quickstart guide calls for Xbox mode and Xbox connections.

By contrast, ASTRO’s PS4 Gen 4 quickstart guide specifies PS4 mode and PS4 connections. Do not assume a PS4 MixAmp will provide Xbox USB chat just because the A40 headset plugs into its 3.5 mm headset port. The cited guides establish the Gen 4 configurations; they do not establish that every earlier or differently labeled MixAmp can be made Xbox-chat compatible with an adapter or setting.

| What you have | What the evidence supports | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| A40 TR plus Xbox MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 | ASTRO documents a MixAmp-based Xbox One setup, including USB, optical audio, and Xbox mode. | Confirm the MixAmp is the Xbox model and follow its Xbox guide. |
| A40 headset without a MixAmp | A controller connection may be possible if the controller has a headset jack and the cable is compatible. | Check the exact A40 generation, cable, and controller revision. ASTRO’s A10 guide describes the general Xbox One controller connection pattern, but it is not an A40 compatibility chart. |
| A40 with a PS4-labeled MixAmp | The PS4 guide documents PS4 mode and connections, not Xbox USB chat support. | Identify the MixAmp model and platform label; do not infer Xbox compatibility from the headset jack alone. |
ASTRO’s A10 Gen 1 quickstart guide notes that a controller without a headset jack needs a separate MixAmp M60 or M80 for that headset setup. This is useful general context, not proof that every A40 cable and controller combination behaves identically.

Set up the documented Xbox One MixAmp configuration
These steps apply to the A40 TR and MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 Xbox configuration described by ASTRO, not automatically to every A40 or MixAmp generation.
- Connect the MixAmp Pro TR to the Xbox One with a micro-USB cable.
- Connect the Xbox One’s optical output to the MixAmp’s optical input with a TOSLINK cable.
- Connect the A40 inline mute cable between the headset and the MixAmp’s front headset port.
- Set the MixAmp’s PC/Xbox switch to Xbox. ASTRO says the console detects it as a USB device and briefly displays “Headset Assigned.”
- In Xbox audio settings, set Headset Format to Stereo Uncompressed.
- Under Speaker Audio, set Optical Audio to Bitstream out and Bitstream Format to Dolby Digital.
For the exact device layout and manufacturer wording, see Logitech / ASTRO Gaming’s A40 TR + MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 Xbox One Quickstart Guide.

What to identify before troubleshooting or replacing anything
- Headset: Find the A40 generation or model name; do not assume all A40 revisions use identical cables.
- MixAmp: Check its model and platform label, plus whether it has a PC/Xbox switch. The documented Gen 4 Xbox guide requires Xbox mode.
- Controller: Check whether it has a 3.5 mm headset jack. If it does not, a direct headset connection is unavailable; the relevant ASTRO A10 guidance mentions M60 or M80 MixAmps for that headset, not as a universal A40 requirement.
- Cable: Confirm the cable fits the specific A40 and supports the functions you want. A missing or unsuitable cable may be replaceable, but verify compatibility with the exact headset model.
- What you need: Distinguish game audio from microphone and party-chat support. A physical fit alone does not confirm that USB voice chat will work through a PS4 MixAmp.
Do you need to buy a new headset?
Not necessarily. If you already own the A40 headset, first identify its MixAmp and cable. For a documented MixAmp-based Xbox configuration, the relevant option is the official A40 TR + Xbox MixAmp Pro TR Gen 4 bundle; it is not required for every possible controller connection. If you are missing a cable, verify an A40-compatible replacement against your exact model before ordering. Neither purchase is automatically necessary just because the headset was sold in a PS4 bundle.
