A first-time user menu is an introductory menu shown to new users to help them discover a product’s features. The phrase is not established as a standardized UX term: Cox uses it for a specific welcome menu in its Contour Stream Player, while other products may orient new users with a dialog, tooltip, or another interface pattern.
What does “first-time user menu” mean?
In general usage, it describes a menu presented when someone first uses a product, with guidance about available features or ways to get started. Its exact meaning depends on the product and context; the available examples do not establish one formal, industry-wide definition.

How Cox uses the term
In a May 18, 2022 announcement, Cox Communications said new Contour Stream Player customers would be welcomed with a first-time user menu. The company described its contents as editorial how-to stories covering the voice remote, live guide, free content, and specialized menus. This is a product-specific use of the phrase, not evidence of a universal UX label. Cox Communications’ announcement
How it differs from a first-use dialog
A menu is one possible format for introductory guidance, but not every first-use prompt is a menu. A Wikimedia Phabricator requirement describes a separate onboarding dialog shown after a user successfully saves an article for the first time. It points to the Saved list and gives the example message “Access all your saved pages from here.” If a confirmation toast also appears, the dialog should be above it. Users can dismiss the dialog with its close button or by clicking outside, and it should not return on later saves. Wikimedia’s onboarding dialog requirement

What to check when identifying one
To understand an introductory feature in a particular product, look at what triggers it, where it appears, what action or feature it explains, and how users can dismiss or revisit it. Those details distinguish a welcome menu from a contextual dialog or another onboarding pattern.
The examples document what the interfaces are intended to do; they do not establish that these patterns improve retention, task completion, or conversion by a measured amount.
