Bruno Molino says an Apple Watch alert helped him recognize that feeling overheated was something more serious. His heart rate kept climbing, and he asked his partner to call an ambulance. The watch did not diagnose or treat him; it gave him a warning he says prompted him to seek help.
What happened to Bruno Molino?
In an account published by Time+Tide Watches on January 5, 2021, Molino, then 55 and living in Melbourne, described sitting on the couch after dinner when he began to feel hot. He went outside to cool down. His Apple Watch beeped and showed a heart rate of about 110 beats per minute, compared with his usual resting rate of roughly 62.
The number continued rising: about 120, then 130, then 140 beats per minute. Molino told his partner to call an ambulance. Paramedics took him to Monash Medical Centre, where, according to his account, his heart rate reached 210 beats per minute. He said hospital doctors diagnosed atrial fibrillation and restored his rhythm with electrical cardioversion after earlier electrical attempts.
Did the Apple Watch diagnose atrial fibrillation?
No such diagnosis is established by the published account. It describes a heart-rate alert and a later hospital diagnosis reported by Molino; it does not identify the watch model, reproduce an ECG or medical record, or say that the watch recorded an ECG during the episode. The precise alert type and its configured threshold are also not stated.

The careful conclusion is that the watch showed Molino an unusually high, rising heart rate and he says that information helped him decide to call for an ambulance. He believes the warning may have saved his life. The article does not establish that the watch detected AFib specifically, or that he would have died without it.
Why the warning mattered
Molino initially thought he was simply overheated. A number that differed sharply from his normal resting rate—and kept increasing—gave him a concrete reason to take his discomfort seriously. The useful part of the watch’s role, as he tells it, was prompting action, not making a diagnosis.

That distinction matters. A heart rate of 110 beats per minute can have many causes, and a single reading cannot identify AFib, a heart attack or another condition. Conversely, a normal reading does not rule out a serious problem.
What Apple Watch heart features can and cannot tell you
Apple offers several distinct functions that are easy to conflate. Which are available depends on the watch model, software, region and setup.

- Heart-rate readings and high- or low-rate notifications: Show pulse information and can notify a wearer when the rate crosses a configured threshold under the feature’s conditions. A notification is not a diagnosis.
- Irregular-rhythm notifications: Screen for patterns that may suggest AFib; they are not continuous monitoring or a guarantee that an arrhythmia is absent. Apple says this feature is not designed to detect heart attacks and does not guarantee freedom from a health condition. See Apple’s Irregular Rhythm Notification Instructions for Use.
- ECG app: On compatible models, records a single-lead tracing and classifies certain results, such as sinus rhythm, AFib, high heart rate or inconclusive. It is not a general-purpose diagnostic test; see Apple’s ECG Instructions for Use.
- Emergency SOS, Fall Detection and Crash Detection: These are separate emergency features, not heart-rhythm diagnosis. Their ability to call for help depends on device status, connectivity, location and regional support.
These present-day feature descriptions should not be read back into Molino’s 2021 incident: the article does not specify his watch generation, whether it had an ECG sensor, whether an ECG was taken, or whether the watch was connected to a phone or cellular service.
What to do if your heart rate suddenly rises
If a high heart rate comes with chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, fainting, severe weakness, confusion or other alarming symptoms, contact emergency services immediately. Do not drive yourself if you may be seriously ill, and do not delay getting help to take repeated ECG readings or troubleshoot the watch. Apple’s irregular-rhythm instructions likewise direct users with emergency symptoms to seek emergency care rather than rely on the feature.

For a less urgent alert without severe symptoms, stop and assess how you feel; a watch reading can be affected by movement, fit, skin contact and sensor limitations. Do not dismiss a persistent or concerning change just because you feel mostly well. A clinician can determine whether evaluation or a medical monitor is appropriate.

| Model | Relevant features listed by Apple | U.S. starting price | Practical fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch SE 3 | High- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, Emergency SOS, Fall Detection and Crash Detection; ECG is not listed for this model. | $249 | Lower-cost option for basic heart-rate alerts and emergency features if ECG recording is not a priority. |
| Apple Watch Series 11 | ECG, high- and low-heart-rate notifications, irregular-rhythm notifications, Emergency SOS and Fall Detection. | $399 | Mainstream option for buyers who specifically want ECG as well as heart-rate alerts. |
| Apple Watch Ultra 3 | ECG and heart-rate notifications, plus emergency features and outdoor-oriented hardware, including longer advertised battery life. | $799 | Better suited to buyers who also value ruggedness and outdoor features; its premium hardware does not make its health functions diagnostic. |
For someone considering a watch because of heart monitoring, check the exact model’s feature list and regional availability, wear it consistently with a suitable fit, and enable the notifications they intend to use. GPS-only watches may rely on a paired iPhone for connectivity; cellular models may be more useful away from the phone but require supported service and coverage. Neither cellular service nor Emergency SOS guarantees that help will be available in every circumstance.
What this story can—and cannot—prove
The account is a first-person report, not independent clinical verification. Molino’s published story reports the hospital diagnosis and treatment, but supplies no medical records, ECG tracing, paramedic statement or clinician interview. It also does not give the watch model or alert settings. One compelling experience cannot show how well watch alerts work for everyone: alerts can be missed, readings can be misleading, and some emergencies may produce no alert at all.
A smartwatch can provide a useful signal at a consequential moment, but it is not a clinical ECG, Holter or event monitor, and it is not a substitute for a clinician’s assessment. People with recurring palpitations or a known arrhythmia should ask a clinician what monitoring is appropriate rather than treating a consumer watch as a care plan.
